Ab Aeterno

Let's talk about LOST!   Ab Aeterno.

The episode opens with Ilana's eye.   Jacob visits bandaged Ilana; apparently they know each other a long time.  He's giving her a list of the remaining candidates.   {Jacob already knew he needed a replacement.}
{Flash Whoosh-the opening moments go back and forth to the beach}
Ilana doesn't know what to do next.  {The scene switches to un-bandaged Ilana in the hospital}  "After I brought them to the temple...what do I do?"
Jacob tells her to ask Ricardus; he'll know what to do.
{Scene back on the beach.} The castaways learn that Richard is Ricardus.
Richard laughs and mentions that he was trying to kill himself when Jack found him.
He reveals a secret to Jack, "You're dead".   Literally not figuratively.
He's known for a long time that all this isn't what they think it is; they aren't on an island, never were. They're in hell.  He's very angry and adamant about Jacob being a liar; he suggests listening to someone else and he heads off.
Richard marches through the dark jungle with his torch.

Ilana wants to go after Richard because Jacob told her Richard "has to know" what to do next.
Jack feels Richard has lost his mind and thinks we're in hell.    If he cared about what Jacob said he wouldn't care about talking to someone else.
Richard is going to Locke but the gang knows Locke is dead.  Ben informs them the consolation it's not exactly Locke.

Hurley is speaking Spanish to an invisible person
Jack asks Hurley "What's he saying?"   Jack says he saw Hurley talking to Jacob.
Hurley says he's not talking to Jacob.
Jack- "Don't lie to me. Please, if you know any something, anything that can help us..."
Hurley insists it's not Jacob and it has nothing to do with Jack.
Miles is watching Hurley and Jack.
Ben tells Ilana that Shephard is right about Richard; going after him is a waste of time, "He doesn't know anything."

Richard continues to make his way through the jungle.

Ben shares with the group the thing that makes him so sure that Richard doesn't know anything is that he's known him since he was 12 years old that should count for something
Frank remarks, "So guys met when you were kids, huh?"
Ben clarifies that he was a kid and Richard looked just like he does today.  Ben is saying this guy doesn't age.
Frank-"And how the hell do ya think that happened?"
Confused and lost Richard still carries his torch walking through the dark jungle.
{No Flash Whoosh/Air plane engine/sounds-rumble}

Tenerife, Canary Islands.  1867

Ricardo rides on horseback to a house.  Isabella is sick, coughing up blood and dying.  Ricardo tells her to go back to sleep and kisses her forehead.  She's burning up so he puts a cloth on her forehead.
He wants to hurry to get the doctor; God willing he'll be back by dawn.   He grabs whatever coins he has, praying they have enough.  Isabella gives him her beloved cross to give to the doctor as well.  He takes it along.
Emotional Ricardo feels if anything ever happened to her...
Isabella and Ricardo share deep love.
Isabella- "Close your eyes  {He does} We'll always be together."
She kisses him while he keeps his eyes closed seemingly with happy thoughts.
Ricardo proclaims, "I will save you."    {He must have a case of the Jack Shephard's. lol}
Isabella clutches a black covered book as Ricardo braves the stormy night on horseback.

The Doctor is eating.
The butler yells from the front door,  "You can't some in! You can't be here!"
Ricardo walks right in and pleads with the hungry doctor, as he couldn't wait because his wife is sick, to which the cold hungry doc suggests blankets, not for Ricardo, but because Ricardo is dripping water all over his floor.
Ricardo pleads for his help and the selfish doctor won't take the half a day journey in the pouring rain.  But he has very expensive medicine that can save her life.   The doctor unlocks a cabinet retrieving the medicine.   Ricardo pours out all the coins he has and when that is  not enough he adds Isabella's cross to the pot.
Ricardo-"Now you have everything."
The doctor says it's worthless and tosses it aside.  This upsets Ricardo and he scrambles to pick it up.  He begs the Doc to let him work off the debt.   When the doctor won't go for it Ricardo tugs on him, pleading, until things take a turn that cause Ricardo to push the doctor; making him hit his head on the table.   The man with the blankets sees Ricardo.
Ricardo had the small cork topped bottle of medicine {Which he technically paid money for} and runs off; riding off into the dark stormy night.

Ricardo arrives back home. {Still dark out. Half a day journey-twice and yet those candles are still burning! lol}
Isabella has passed. {Eyes open.}   He listens for her heartbeat and breaks down crying.

Cuffed Ricardo sits in a jail reading the bible. {Luke 4:37}  He wears Isabella's cross.   The Chaplin comes in with food but Ricardo isn't hungry.   The father notes the bible is in English.   Ricardo has been teaching himself because he and Isabella were going to travel to the new world and start a family, a new life.
Ricardo is prepared to make his confession.  He kneels downs, crosses/blesses himself, "Forgive me Father for I have sinned."   Truly repentant Ricardo begs for God's forgiveness to which the Chaplin informs him he cannot grant him absolution for murder.  This shocks Ricardo because this was an accident.  He feels there must be some way to earn God’s forgiveness.
The only way to return God's grace is through penance and Ricardo is willing to do anything.   The Chaplin smiles and scoffs at this as Ricardo doesn't have time, because tomorrow he will be hanged.  The Chaplin's afraid the devil awaits him in hell.  Ricardo is left stunned.
Ricardo looks out his cell window up at a dead tree.   {A tree symbolizes life and that one is dead. Crow caws}
Ricardo is led blindfolded
Whitfield looks at Ricardo's strong hands and in this mouth as he asks about his English speaking ability.  Ricardo also shares he works in the fields.
It’s his lucky day because Magnus Hanso will take him on a boat ride; he's Hanso's property now.   Whitfield pays the "father" for Ricardo and hopes Ricardo doesn't get seasick.
They sail the rough and stormy seas.  The chained men try to see what's outside the boat by peering through the thin wood planked walls of the ship.
“Can you see anything?”
It’s too dark.”
"There’s an island”
One prisoner sees the statue in the dark and declares it to be The Devil
"The Island is guarded by the devil!" {Oh wow! It's 'guarded by' the devil!}
Ricardo is afraid and clutches the cross around his neck.
The terrific storm causes the ship  to actually take flight, crashing into the statue breaking it apart and then ends up in the middle of the bloody jungle.

It's daylight and the survivors of the bizarre shipwreck wake up.  From down below the chained passengers all look up into the daylight calling out for help, "We're alive!"
We hear that Captain Hanso is dead.
Whitfield comes down revealing there are only 5 officers left and limited supplies so he kills the prisoners.  He tells Ricardo his actions are because if he freed him "it would only be a matter of time before you killed me".
Ricardo doesn't have the cross around his neck.
Just then the smoke monster is on deck and takes lives.
Whitfield wants to know what's going on up there and yells out to this men,  "I said report!"
He is taken by the smoke monster!
The smoke comes face to face with scared Ricardo, flashing its Flashes.   Ricardo closes his eyes and whispers {prayers}.   All of a sudden it is gone but is heard in the distance.

A blue butterfly flies into the Black Rock.
Ricardo tries desperately to remove a nail from a floor plank so he can use  it as a tool to help free himself.  It starts to rain and he tries to drink the dripping water but he can't reach it.
Weakening and tired Ricardo retrieves the nail and continues to work on freeing himself.   A hungry boar is chowing on one of the prisoners.  Ricardo tells the boar to get out of here, "I'll kill you!" and uses the nail as his only defense.  The boar speeds by causing Ricardo to drop the nail a few inches out of his reach.
Very weak Ricardo hears a woman's voice.  He tries to focus his eyes to see clearly; it's Isabella. {This seems to be 5 days later. There are 5 score marks on a post}
He wonders how she is "here".
Isabella tells him they are both dead, "We're in hell."
{Why would they be in hell?! Why is she there period?!}   She claims to be there to save him before "he" comes back; the devil.  She shares that she looked in his eyes and all she saw was evil.   She asks if he saw him too and Richard "thinks he has".

The smoke monster nears and Ricardo tells her to run; he insists he said he would save her.  "If you love me, GO!"     She heads up the stairs right into the smoke monster's path.
Ricardo breaks down.

A man with a lantern enters the dark ship, brings water/silver cups to weak and broken Ricardo.  He touches the left shoulder of unconscious Ricardo.    It's the MIB with dark eye/eyes.
Ricardo-"Who are you?"
The MIB-"A friend."
Ricardo-"I am in hell?"
MIB-"Yes, I'm afraid you are."
The man explains he was there long before "your ship".
Ricardo shares about Isabella being there and how when the black smoke came she ran and hasn't come back.
MIB seems to not be aware of her and states "It probably means he has her."
Ricardo-"Who?"
MIB-"I think you know who."   {Who? The devil?}
MIB will help him because he wants to be free too.   As  luck would have it he found keys on one of the officers outside.   He thinks they'll work, but before he tries he needs to know that Ricardo will help and will do anything he asks.   They agree, so MIB frees him from his chains

MIB complements his friend "It's good to see you out of those chains."
The MIB helps him and tells him he's going to need his strength if they're going to escape.   He also explains there's only one way to escape from hell and that's to kill the devil.
Blue eyed MIB directs Ricardo to the broken statue and where he'll find the devil.  He presents him with a fancy dagger to use to kill the devil; giving him the same instructions Dogen gave Sayid.
He also reveals he is the black smoke and claims Isabella was running from "him"  and there wasn't anything he could do to stop it.   The devil betrayed him, took his body and humanity; the devil can be very persuasive.
Ricardo knows murder is wrong and feels that's what brought him "here".
The MIB says they can continue to talk about what's right or wrong all day, but the question remains the same. Basically what will he do to see his wife again?
{The MIB leads us to believe the he/black smoke and the devil are two different beings and not one in the same.}
Emotionally torn Richard does indeed head to the broken statue on his mission and ends up getting his ass kicked by Jacob.  Jacob wonders who gave him the dagger and also claims to not know his wife.
Richard explains she didn't come on the ship and she's dead.
With that Jacob asks, "Then why are you asking me where she is?"
It is revealed Ricardo met a man dressed in black in the jungle who said Jacob was the devil.  {Watch Jacob's expression here.}
Ricardo again claims to have seen his wife in this place and Jacob says it wasn't his wife.   Ricardo blurts out she is dead just like him and he is in hell.
Jacob-"You really think you're dead?"
Ricardo-"Where else would I be?"
Jacob assures him he is not dead and proves it by forcefully submerging him the water repeatedly making him realize he had to hold his breath and bringing him up for air.
Jacob-"Why should I stop?!"
Ricardo-"Because I want to live!"
Jacob feels that's the first sensible thing he's said.
Ricardo's wet body is warmed by a gray blanket. Jacob brings over a corked bottle of wine and two silver cups.    Ricardo wonders what is inside (nods to the foot statue) and Jacob informs him "No one comes in unless I invite them in." He drinks.
Ricardo outright asks, "Are you the devil?"
Brown eyed Jacob says with a smirky smile, "No."
Ricardo-"Then who are you?"
His name is Jacob and he's the one who brought his ship to the island.   His explanation and illustration involves the use of the bottle of wine.  He demonstrates the wine as "hell/malevolence/evil/darkness" swirling around in the bottle unable to get out because if it did it would spread.  "The cork is this island, and it's the only thing keeping the darkness in....where it belongs."
He turns the bottle upside down to prove the cork's strength.
Jacob also explains that "That man who sent you to kill me believes everyone's corruptible because it's in their very nature to sin.   I bring people here to prove him wrong. And when they get here their past doesn't matter."

We learn there were many brought to the island before the black rock's arrival and those people are all dead. {Jacob delivers that news very nonchalantly}
Richard is curious that if Jacob is the one who brought them then why didn't he help them.
Jacob wanted them to help themselves.  "To know the difference between right and wrong without me having to tell them.  It's all meaningless if I have to force them to do anything. Why should I have to step in?"
Ricardo feels if Jacob won't "he/MIB will".
Blue eyed Jacob, seeming as if a light bulb went off, offers Richard a job, giving him a purpose.  The job is too "step in" because Jacob doesn't want to "step in".   He can be the representative, an intermediary between the people Jacob brings to the island and in return he will give Ricardo something.
Ricardo makes a few suggestions:  He wants his wife back, which Jacob can't do.  He asks if Jacob can absolve him of his sins so he doesn't go to hell, which Jacob can't do either. {Why? Because he's not God.}   Richard doesn't want to die, "I want to live forever."
BINGO!  "That" Jacob can do. {He touches Ricardo's right shoulder.}

Ricardo returns to the MIB {green eyes} with his mission unaccomplished.   Ricardo gives a white rock to MIB from Jacob.

MIB-"I'm sure you realize if you go with him you'll never be with your wife again.  I understand...he can be very...convincing.  But I want you to know if you ever change your mind, and I mean ever, my offer still stands.  I have something for you."
He hands him Isabella's cross; he found it on the ship.
Ricardo looks down at the cross and looks up to find the MIB has disappeared.
Ricardo buries the cross under the stone bench.  He kisses it and says goodbye to his love.
{Air plane engine/sounds-rumble}
Richard digs up the cross because he's changed his mind.
He looks up, "Are you listening to me?  I've changed my mind...I was wrong!   You said I could change my mind...You said the offer would stand...Does the offer still stand?!  Does the offer still stand!?   Does the offer still stand!?"
Hurley appears, "What offer, dude?"
He kinda followed Richard out there.
Richard yells at him to get out. "Didn't you hear what I said?  I told you people I don't know anything!  Why did you follow me?"
Hurley said his wife sent him and she's standing right next to him.  Apparently Isabella saw him dig up the cross.
Isabella tells Hurley in Spanish-"He doesn't believe you."
Hurley translates; Richard doesn't see her.
Isabella compliments his English and he replies Spanish.   Isabella wants Richard to close his eyes; it's okay because Hurley will tell him what she says.
Isabella tells him it wasn't his fault that she died, it was her time. "You've suffered enough, Ricardo."
Richard misses her and would do anything to be together.
She tells him they are already together and she kisses his cheek.
Richard cries and puts her cross around his neck and asks Hurley if something’s wrong.
Hurley mentions that she said one more thing "Something you have to do. She said you have to stop the man in black. You have to stop him from leaving the island. Cause if you don't...{Spanish}We all go to hell."   {Uh…She didn’t say that!  WTF is Hurley doing?!}
John Locke is watching this from afar

MIB sits on a log playing with a white rock and Jacob joins him.   It is evident these two are at odds but one seems to be there against his will.    As long as Jacob's alive the MIB isn't going anywhere.  The MIB's mission is to kill Jacob and anyone who replaces him.
Jacob gives him the corked bottle of wine; something to pass the time.
Jacob will see him around.
MIB-“Sooner than you think." and he smashes the bottle on the log.
Ab Aeterno is a GREAT episode!
The first thing I need to get off my chest is that these bratty boys just can't seem to get along! They should be punished! They both manipulate and con.   Although, I do believe we saw many elements that could mean the two are one in the same; two halves of a whole or opposition.

The episode drowned me in the words hell and devil so much they proved to not only be irrelevant but just plain old meaningless.
I loved that this episode kept things human.    Ricardo lost the love of his life and felt he was forsaken and abandoned by his "god".   Jacob took advantage of Richard’s vulnerability and claimed him; giving him a job and a purpose in “this place”.
But I do feel it's Richard's perspective that he is in “hell".   It's rooted in his own personal belief system of being religious.  Richard has a broken heart, lost his wife and accidentally "killed" a man...that's why he's on the "Island".   He is broken and lost.  He’s literally bearing the cross of his loss and his self imposed suffering.    Interesting that Jack doesn't think they're in hell; as a matter of fact he sounds sure of it.

So, we know they’re not on an “Island” and it isn’t “hell” and come on…it’s not a “cork” that plugs up an opening to something on a moving “Island”.

Let’s talk about hell for a second. I researched some things and agree with the problem I find with the concept of hell. It takes in four important issues.
1). That it would have to exist in the first place.
2). That only some/certain people go there.
3). That there is no escape from the depths of it.
4). It is punishment for actions displayed during lifespan on Earth.

People could only commit a finite number of sins within their lifetime, but if they went to "hell" they would suffer punishment eternally, infinitely. That's just friggin' over the top punishment. Why would Richard's God not grant truly pennant Ricardo forgiveness for a death that was clearly an accident? Why would he be punished forever for such a circumstance? Of course it’s "man" who didn't grant him time for penance. Some coincidence, huh?

Let’s be honest each castaway has sinned, but did they sin enough to bring them to float the rest of their lives on a cork?!   Now Kate blowing up her father was murder so she should float on the fucking cork.

Richard claims they’re all dead and they're not on an Island, they never were and they're in hell.  Yeah, a personal "hell" not a literal "hell", where Apollo bars don’t melt or ranch dressing doesn't need refrigeration once opened.

If these two sides are ping pong-ing their life away, trying to beat each other with their little game of "bring the lost people to the island”,  all in an effort to "see" if people know the difference between right and wrong, and one side is supposed to be a positive stimulus and the other side a negative stimulus, why the hell are neither trying to influence to better the situation?   Maybe they like the chaos that gets created on the “Island” or they need a reminder of what right and wrong really is too.   These two sides just can't seem to find balance at all.

Everybody is lying and conning each other. A conman makes the game work by making the “mark” think ideas came from them. The con exploits human characteristics victimizing individuals. Isn’t that what Jacob is doing by bringing people to the “Island”.

I want to touch on something from the past. The John Locke we see now seems to have shown himself to us in the past many, many times, but specifically in season three.
That motivated Locke showed us:
* That he was determined to get to Ben, Jacob and the sub.
* Locke pushed Mikhail into the sonic fence trying to kill him, or at least silence him for a while.
* He utilized a loophole/cheat (encouraged by Richard).
* Got Sawyer to kill Anthony Cooper {but that also enabled Sawyer to face something that he needed closure on.}
* In Man behind the Curtain Locke beats the shit out of Mikhail when he refers to John an outsider.
* John offer Ben and doesn’t drink it.

Things to note...Questions to ask...
* Jacob and MIB eye color changes brown-blue-(green). {Maybe w/different TV's it shows up different.} There is a different brown eye color for the Losties and Isabella.
* Again I must ask if Richard doesn't age why the hell would he need reading glasses?!
* Richard. Ricardo. Ricardus.
* Richard comes from a very "religious/faith" based background and that is what the "Island" played on all these "years".
* Richard was literally being "blindly" led.
* The Black Smoke doesn't kill Ricardo and returns Isabella's cross.
* Crazy. Lost mind. Somebody may have a serious case of split personality and need to pull themselves together.
* The medicine bottle was corked and the wine bottle was corked.
* Medicine. Wine/alcohol
* Some of Richard's details were just like Desmond's details. Boat journey on a stormy night, running for the Doc, pushing a man who hits his head/killing him. That's not coincidence.
* Are they all in jail or just imprisoned by their own suffering?
* We don't see MIB eat or drink. We only see Jacob with food/drink. Here the selfish doctor was eating.
* Why did one of the prisoners claim the statue/island to be the devil?
* Is it only Jacob that ever left the "Island" to recruit people?
* Sun was taught English so she could go to America.
* The “new world”.  Jin and Sun wanted to escape to America.
* Whitfield.  In The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham, Locke comes across three instances with the word "field" in his travels: SouthField. Fieldcroft. Westerfield.
* Teach. Learn. Language.
* Real. Not real.
* Boar-scavenger, Butterfly, Isabella… Was it MIB? Isabella was inside the ship while the black smoke can be heard outside in the distance.
* Who would grant someone eternal life? Did Jacob literally give eternal life or did Ricardo assume it and/or ask for it? {wish} The MIB touched Ricardo too.
* 1867: The Black Rock voyage was to have begun March 22 1845
* The "Island" is guarded "by" the devil.
* Would the "devil" admit he's the devil?   No.
* Would the "devil" try to convince someone that someone else is the devil?
* Ilana is bandaged and then she's not. WTF? How was she healed? How much time passed?
* Why was Richard seeming pretty sure that Jack is dead?
* Michael told Jack and Locke that the computer wasn't what they thought it was.
* Black book/Bible.   Black smoke.
* Be careful who you think is good and who you think is bad. Things and people still aren't what you think they are.
* The very patient MIB still seems as if he wants to be free of the game.
* Is it Jacob who doesn't use the "Isabella" card again until he needed it or is there a third grand master in play?
* What is the "Island"?

Vocabulary and Research...
* Ab Aeterno (Translation) Counting from Eternal
1). Since the beginning of time. 2). (figuratively) Since a very long time ago.
* Abaddon: The Hebrew word meaning "destruction" is sometimes used as a synonym of Hell.
* Diyu is typically depicted as an underground maze with various levels and chambers, to which souls are taken after death to atone for their sins committed when they were alive.
* The Hellschreiber or Feldhellschreiber was a facsimile based teleprinter invented by Rudolf Hell. It has since been emulated on computer sound cards by amateur radio operators; the resulting mode is referred to as Hellschreiber, Feld-Hell, or simply Hell. "Hellschreiber" translates into English as "Light Writer," "Bright Writer," or "Clear Writer," and is a pun on the name of its inventor Hell (the adjective) is German for "light," the adverb is "bright."
* Cork anagrams to ROCK.
* Ab Aeterno anagrams to- Eaten Boar
* El Socorro anagrams to- Rose Color

I am so happy that the writers gave Nestor this chance to shine.  His portrayal of suffering Richard was amazing and truly engaging.

The LOST story makes total and perfect sense if you understand the metaphor of it all.  Everyone there has lost something that has caused a part of them to die.  Also part of the metaphor is to "let go" and also to let part of you/your ego to die so you can become new/reborn...to really live.
I still believe they need to face things, rid the negative and find themselves.  And when they accomplish "balance" they don't have to be in hell or in “this place” anymore...They can just walk through the escape hatch.

Love to all who are "LOST"™

Disclaimer: I never claim to know everything about the show and my thoughts by no means make me right! The things I share here are my views and/or opinions. I don't claim to catch every single detail either! You all know I hate spoilers! And I stand clear of reading certain sites as to not take me off my own course of research. The one thing I don't need to do here is rehash all of the obvious clues from an episode, we all know what they are. Understood? Good! Let the fun begin! I'll only note things that I know come up as clues later, but need to be noted when they first show up and things I find that will be of importance! It will get very exciting as we progress into the story.

Orientation

Let's talk about LOST!    Orientation.
(Click the pics!)

Jin is yelling about the Others to Sawyer and Michael. {His hands are free.}
 Sawyer goes to attack the Big Other but he knocks him out, hits Michael with a big stick and then hits and drags Jin into the jungle.
The Others are literally dragging the three Castaway's through the jungle in three individual nets. They toss the three men down into a pit; a dug out hole in the ground. Groggy Michael wants to know where his boy is.   The big dude closes a hatch door made of sticks on them.

In the Swan hatch Desmond fires a shot. “Do you want him to die? Put it down.”
Jack-“Is this what you were talking about, Locke? Is this your destiny? All roads lead here.”
{Flash Whoosh}
Locke appears bored as he sits in at an anger management group meeting. Francine goes on about her pain that her mother stole $30 from her again and she wants it back.   Apparently her mother drinks. Locke scoffs. The lady Chief of the meeting asks if Locke has something to say, “John, you've been coming here for a month now...”

Amused Locke doesn’t think $30 is worth getting angry about.
The Chief-“Well, Francine feels like 30 dollars..."

Locke-“Francine feels a little too much, if you ask me. You all do. I mean, seriously…So-and-so never called me back, my mother stole 30 dollars from me.  I never even knew who my parents were.  A couple of years ago my uh, my birth mother found me, and uh, she told me I was special. {He gets teary} And… and through her I met my real father. Great news, right?! {He gets fired up} Well, he pretended to love me just long enough to steal my kidney because he had to have a transplant.  And then he dropped me back in the world like a piece of trash just like he did on the day that I was born. {He yells} You want your damned 30 dollars back? I want my kidney back!”

Locke is outside trying to light a cigarette but can’t.    In frustration he tosses it to the ground.
A woman from the meeting walks up to him and says, “Probably a good idea. You know if you get kidney cancer you've only got one.”
John thinks that’s funny and apologizes for ruining her meeting.
Helen-“Oh hell, you just said everything I've always wanted to say in there.   Most of the time I want to stand up and scream: get over it, freaks.”
John wonders why she doesn’t.
Helen-“I have to keep a cork in. Once I get all hot and bothered there's no stopping me. I guess you won't be coming back next week, huh?”
John, “No, not likely.”
Helen feels that’s too bad as she likes bald guys.
John replies he’s not bald. Flirty Helen can wait. They introduce themselves to each other.
{Flash Whoosh}
In the Swan hatch Jack wants to know where Kate is.   Desmond demands Jack lower his gun or he’ll blow Locke’s damned head off.
While Jack demands to know where Kate is, we see her crawling through the AC vent, remove a grate and lower herself into a dark room.    She opens the sliding door to the main living area to let in light and sees she’s in a stocked weapons storage vault/Armory.    Kate loads a rifle and quietly makes her way over to the three men arguing over putting down the gun.    Kate comes up behind Desmond and knocks him down with her rifle, a gun accidentally fires and hits the computer; it’s smoking.

Jack tells Desmond not to move but Locke is compassionate to Desmond being unarmed.
Jack yells-“He just had a gun pointed at your head!”
Desmond freaks out seeing the damaged computer, “Oh… What did you do? What did you do? We're all going to die. We're all going to die.”

Desmond explains to Jack if he doesn’t let him up and fix the computer they’re all gonna die.    Jack won’t let him up and tells him to “Stop moving or I swear to god…”
Desmond- “Look at the wall. {Timer 98 to 97} You see that? That's a timer. It's counting down. I've got to enter the code. I've got to push the button.”
Jack-“Or what?”
Concerned Locke feels Jack should let him up."
Jack- “Don't tell me what to do! {he asks Desmond} Or what? What's going to happen?”
Desmond looks up at Jack and asks, “Do I know you?
{Funny, Jack recognized Desmond when he saw him. Did Desmond forget that? It supposedly was only moments ago!}
Jack makes sure Kate “has” Desmond “covered” and lets Desmond get up.      Desmond runs over to the computer and pushes an on-off switch a few times to evaluate things.   Locke just looks at Jack.
{Flash Whoosh}
Helen is sleeping as Locke is quietly putting his shoes on.  Helen wakes up and wonders where he’s going.
Locke- “Nowhere, I… I … I just have trouble sleeping in a strange bed. No, it has nothing to do with you, Helen, I promise. I really like you. I'm sorry, I'll call you later.”
Helen is insulted.

It's daybreak and Locke is sitting in his red beetle in front of Cooper's house drinking coffee. He watches the guard at the house via the rear view mirror.   Cooper gets in the car and says “Morning” to John. John is stunned.
Cooper-“John, I know you like to drive through my neighborhood.   And I know that every now and then you like to park outside my house.   Now, I thought it might all stop when I moved, but uh, here you are. Now, I admit at first I thought it was funny… now it's just annoying. So how about you tell me what the hell it is you want.”
John is obviously in emotional pain so he asks Cooper “Why?”
Cooper-“There is no 'why'. Do you think you're the first person that ever got conned? You needed a father figure and I needed a kidney, and that's what happened. Get over it. And John, don't come back. You're not wanted.”
John takes a sip of coffee and breaks down; he’s deeply hurt.
{Flash Whoosh}
Desmond is looking through his bookshelf for something but also turns something electronic on; lights go on {you can hear it power up.}
Locke looks around.

Locke-“I don't think you need that, Kate {to Desmond} Whatever you're looking for, maybe I can help.”
Des-“Can you fix a computer? {Locke gives the ‘I don’t know’ gesture.} Then you can't help me, can you?”
Kate-“Sayid can fix a computer."
Locke thinks that a good idea, “Get him. Go and get Sayid."
Jack-“Can you get back up that rope?”
Kate- I won't have to, there's got to be a front door in this place.” {Really?}
Desmond- “Down the corridor to the left. Be persistent, the wheel sticks. {Desmond finds his jar of parts} Got ya.”
Desmond and Locke run to the computer.
Kate persistently turns the sticky wheel that opens the door.

Jack takes the jar hostage in an effort to get Desmond to come clean. “Now, you're going to tell me what's going on.”
Locke tells Jack they don’t have time for…"
Jack-“We're taking a time out.”
Desmond pleads with him.
Jack-“Look, you want to get to work you're going to tell me how you got here."
Desmond-“It was three years ago. I was on a solo race around the world, and my boat crashed into the reef, and then Kelvin came."
Locke-“Kelvin?"
Desmond-“Kelvin… he comes running out of the jungle, hurry, hurry, come with me. He brings me down here.  The first thing he does because there's beeping already, he types in the code, he pushes the button, and it stops. What was all that about, I say. Just saving the world, he says.”
Jack-"Saving the world?"
Desmond-"His words, not mine. So I started pushing the button, too. And we saved the world together for awhile and that was lovely.  Then Kelvin died…and now here I am all alone. The end.“
Jack hands Desmond the jar and the timer clicks down to 84.
Jack says to Locke, “Don't tell me you believe this. This is crazy. You think that makes sense, pushing a button? You're going to take his word for it?”
Locke feels his word is all they have.
As calmed down Desmond works on the computer he tells the guys they don’t have to take his word for it, “Watch the film.”
He directs them to the bookcase, “Top shelf, behind ‘Turn of the Screw’, projector's in the pantry.”
Locke hurries to get going on that!

 Locke finds Turn of the Screw, tosses it, then finds the film reel tin marked "Orientation" and shows it to Jack.

At the beach Hurley plays catch with no collar Vincent near the water. He runs over to help Sayid who is dragging a metal crate along the beach.
Hurley-"Dude, I've got to say, I didn't think we were going to get through the night. And I wasn't even here for that baby stealing part."
Sayid assures him it was very exciting.
Hurley feels it's about time things are finally returning to normalness. {Normalness, here on this "Island"? Could anything be considered normal? Maybe there really is a normalcy to the Island that Hurley knows about? Hmmm?!}
Kate calls out for Sayid.
Hurley-"Uh, crap"
Kate informs Sayid they need his help.

In the pit Sawyer whispers asking Jin in English, "What do you know? What did they do to you? Who the hell are they? Who the hell are they?"
Jin-"Others." {Mentions something in Korean.} Michael asks Jin if he saw Walt.
Sawyer-"The Others? How many? How many?"
Jin communicates in Korean and gestures that he was blindfolded.
Michael translates the gesture, "He was blindfolded."
Sawyer suggests there could be a hundred of the out there, "Push me up."   He's going to try to get them out of there.
They push Sawyer up and he tries to open the stick hatch, but they've got it weighted down with something; it's tied off somewhere. Sawyer wants to be lifted higher.
A knife pokes through the stick hatch and Sawyer falls. The big dude looks down at and throws an unconscious woman in.
Michael-"It's a girl." {She has scratches on her face.}

Locke is setting up the film on the reel to reel projector. Jack wants to know what was going on down here before I showed up.
Locke-"Kate was tied up, Desmond had a gun on me. I think you pretty much caught the gist of it."
Jack whispers,"Desmond."
Locke shares Desmond wants to know a lot about them; how they got there and if they were "sick."
Jack-"You didn't ask anything about him?"
Locke-"He was the one with the gun."
Jack-"You sure seem calm for someone who believes the world's going to end in the next 45 minutes."
Confident Locke feels, "He'll fix it."
Jack-"You understand that what he's saying. It's, it's insane. It's impossible."
Locke-"Why is it insane?"
Jack-"Because the last time I saw a computer that was going to save the world, it didn't look like that." {That is not a general statement, that is specific!}
Locke-"Is the reason you're so upset because he said he recognized you? {Jack doesn't answer.} Because that would be impossible."   {Nothing is impossible.}

They watch the film...John smiles.
The DHARMA Initiative 3 of 6
Swan-DHARMA logo
Orientation Station 3 The Swan.
Marvin-"Welcome, I'm Dr. Marvin Candle, and this is the orientation film for Station 3 of the DHARMA Initiative.   In a moment you'll be given a simple set of instructions for how you and your partner will fulfill the responsibilities associated with the station.   But first, a little history.
The DHARMA Initiative was created in 1970, and it is the brainchild of Gerald and Karen DeGroot, two doctoral candidates at the University of Michigan.   Following in the footsteps of visionaries such as B.F. Skinner {The film glitches/skips/edit} imagined a large scale communal research compound where scientists and free thinkers from around the globe could pursue research in meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism, and Utopian social {Edit} Danish industrialist and munitions magnate Alvar Hanso whose financial backing made their dream of a multi-purpose social science research facility a reality.
You and your partner are currently located in Station 3, or the Swan, and will be for the next 540 days.   Station 3 was originally constructed as a laboratory where scientists could work to understand the unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from this sector of the island.   Not long after the experiments began, however, there was an incident.  And since that time the following protocol has been observed: every 108 minutes the button must be pushed.  From the moment the alarm sounds you will have 4 minutes to enter the code into the microcomputer processor {Edit} induction into the program.   When the alarm sounds, either you or your partner must input the code.   It is highly recommended that you and your partner take alternating shifts. In this manner you will stay as fresh and alert {Edit} utmost importance that when the alarm sounds the code be entered correctly, and in a timely fashion.
Do not attempt to use the computer {Edit} for anything {Edit}. Congratulations. Until your replacements arrive, the future of the project is in your hands.
On behalf of the DeGroots, Alvar Hanso and all of us at the DHARMA Initiative, thank you. Namaste. And good luck."

Locke states, "We're going to need to watch that again." {I love Locke!}

Locke and Helen are at a restaurant. Helen gives John a gift. "It's a present. It's been 6 months, sort of an anniversary, right?"
John didn't get her anything. Helen doesn't mind as her gift only cost a buck. John opens the small box and reveals it's a key to Helen's place.
Helen thought he might be tired of knocking.   John doesn't know what to say.  Helen tells him there's a condition that comes with the key... "When you stay over, you stay over."
She reveals she followed him last night, "To that house that you go to. Is it your father's house?"
John wonders why she would follow him.
Helen-"Well, you sneak off in the middle of the night. I... I just needed to know where you were going? I care about you, John,"
John seems a bit insulted-"Well, yeah, but what I do is my business. It's personal."
Helen-"I wasted 20 years of my life being angry. I told myself I would get over it, but I couldn't do it alone. I needed to find help. You help me John. And I can help you. You just have to promise me that you're not going to go to that place anymore."
John agrees and puts the key in his pocket. They kiss.
{Flash Whoosh}
Locke is re-loading the film in the projector.
Jack-"You're going to watch that again?"
Locke-"Aren't you?"
No, Jack is not.

In the pit Ana Lucia wakes up and appears scared. Concerned Sawyer asks "Sister" if she's alright.
Ana Lucia-"Who are you?"
Michael explains they crashed there; they were on a plane, Sydney to Los Angeles."
Sawyer-"40 of us made it."
Ana Lucia-"Flight 815?"
Sawyer-"You were on it, too?"
Michael-"What? You were in the back? It broke off mid-air. How did you..."
Ana Lucia-"I don't know. I don't know. The plane came apart, and... and somebody's fricking hardside came out of the overhead and knocked me out. I woke up underwater and made my way to the top...swam to shore."
Sawyer asks if she's been out there by herself  the whole time.
Ana Lucia-"Trying to find food... making my way hoping to find somebody. And then, yesterday, they found me."
Michael asks who they are.
Ana Lucia-"You tell me."
Michael inquires if she saw a boy about 10 years old, "They took my son."
Ana introduces herself and says she didn't see him.
Sawyer- "Sawyer. This is Mike. The quiet Korean guy is Jin. We're about to be the best thing that ever happened to you."
Ana Lucia asks, "How's that?"
Sawyer-"Because next time Shaft opens the cage {shows the gun } he's going to get a surprising little howdy doody."

Desmond is working on fixing the computer. Jack asks Desmond if he's in contact with the people that made the film; is he in contact with anyone?
Desmond-"Do you think I'd be here if I was?"
Jack wonders how Desmond "Didn't know about the crash, about us?" {Really! He didn't hear a crash?!}
Focused Desmond-"I push this button every 108 minutes. I don't get out much."
Jack-"So, these replacements?"
Desmond-"Kelvin died waiting for his replacements."
Jack asks if that's so, "Where does his food come from? You really think this is happening?"
Desmond-"Why wouldn't it be?"
Jack-"It says "Quarantine" on the inside of the hatch to keep you down here. To keep you scared. But you know what? We've been up there for over 40 days and no one's gotten sick. You think that this is the only part of it that's true?   Do you ever think that maybe they put you down here to push a button every 100 minutes just to see if you would?  That all of this, the computer, the button...it's just a mind game? An experiment?" {Every 108 minutes Jack, not 100!}
Desmond-"Every single day. And for all our sakes, I hope it's not real.   But the film says this is an electromagnetic station.   And I don't know about you, brother, but every time I walk past that concrete wall out there, my fillings hurt. {Although it sounds like he says his feeling hurt. Plus it's a good thing a dentist landed in a tree on the other side of the island!}
{Timer-49 00} Right. {He flips the switch on the computer, it blows and the power goes out. A generator supplies minimal power} Oh no!"

Locke asks what happened.
Desmond starts to freak out and declares "It's over" and packs food, the serum and pneumatic injector. {The Third Policeman book is shown.}
Locke- "What are you doing? Are you leaving? Desmond? Wait. We can...we can fix the computer. Sayid is coming. He knows..."
Desmond-"Give him my best." {WTF?!}
Jack sees that Desmond leaves the photo of he and Penny behind.
Locke is upset. "Wait, wait, wait! Where are you... You can't leave. Where are you going?" {It's almost like Locke is asking those questions to himself.}
Desmond, bailing out the door with the sticky wheel tells Locke, "As far as I can run, brother." {There's another door beyond that one.}
Jack goes to follow him. Locke asks Jack what should they do.
Jack-"Nothing. We do nothing. It's not real. None of it's real."
Locke-"This isn't... this isn't what was supposed to happen!"
Jack-"What was supposed to happen?"
Locke-"Please, don't leave me here."
Jack-"Bye, John. You're on your own."
Locke-"Jack!"
Jack exits.

Timer-47 00
Locke tries put part of the computer together but knocks over a red toolbox. As he picks up the tools he's getting angry and frustrated, "Why is this happening like this? What do you want? What do you... What am I supposed to do?!"    Locke is near tears.

Helen is sleeping while John lies wide awake staring at the ceiling.
John splashes water on his face and looks at himself and at his kidney scar in the mirror.

John is sitting in his car in front of the gated house drinking coffee.    Another car bumps into the back of his and Helen gets out.   John is stunned.   Fired up Helen grabs Locke's keys out of the ignition and runs over to the gate as panicked John begs her to wait, but Helen throws his keys over the gate anyway.
John-"Why are you doing this?"
Helen-"He's not coming out of this house, John because he doesn't care. I know why you're here, why you keep coming here.   You're scared. You're scared of moving forward...with me, with us. You're going to have to choose. Him or me."
John-"No, no, no, it's not that simple."
Helen feels it is.
John-"I, I, I can't. I can't."
Helen-"Yes, you can."
Angry John feels, "No, I can't! I don't know how."       He gets teary.
Helen-"Because you don't know what's going to happen. None of us do. That's why it's called a leap of faith, John. You don't have to be alone."
She holds out her hand and John takes it.
{Flash Whoosh}

Alone Locke is crying. Kate comes in calling out for Jack.
She enters the computer room and just by saying John's name he snaps out of it.
Hurley and Sayid are with Kate. Hurley seems amazed by the room.
Sayid-"What is this place?"
Kate asks where Jack is.
Locke-"Jack's gone. {to Sayid} I need your help."
Timer shows 24 00.
{23 minutes lapsed.}
Kate is in the corridor looking around. She asks Sayid what it looks like.
Sayid-"It's a breaker box. There has to be one. Follow the conduit lines."
Hurley-"Cool, okay, great. What's a conduit line?"
Kate points out tubes and tells him to follow those.
Hurley finds the pantry. "Whoa!"
Kate-"Did you find it?"
Hurley-"Uh, uh, depends on what you mean by it?" {Kate already found that!}

In the pit Sawyer tells Ana Lucia,"Alright, here's what we're going to do.  Jin plays dead, you call for help."
Ana Lucia-"Sick prisoner, are you serious?"
He wonders if she has a better idea.  She just wants to know where he got the gun and how'd he get it on the plane. Sawyer shares there was a federal marshal on the plane.
Sawyer-"Yeah, I'm lucky. Mike, let's get this thing going..."
Sawyer didn't use the gun while they were being grabbed because he was too busy getting hit in the face with a club. He wonders why "Cupcake" is so interested.  Michael immediately changes the subject, "C'mon, let's just...we gotta.."
Ana Lucia grabs the gun and elbows Sawyer in the face.
Ana Lucia yells,"Back up! Back up. Coming out. Coming out!"
The big dude lifts the stick hatch, lowers a rope and pulls Ana Lucia up. He asks what happened and who they are. He ties down the hatch made of sticks.

Desmond trips and falls down a hill as he runs through the jungle. Jack appears and pulls his gun on Desmond, "Stop."
Desmond thinks Jack stopped him for the code. Jack doesn't know what Desmond is referring to.
{Are we sure Jack wasn't a policeman or a soldier in a previous incarnation of his life? The dude always has a gun! lol!}
Desmond-"Listen carefully. If by some miracle you manage to get the computer working again you've got to enter the code: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, hit execute. Again- 4, 8, 15..."
Jack just tells him to shut up. "Nothing is going to happen. Some man takes you down there, shows you a movie, and you push a button on, on faith alone? Nothing is going to happen!"
Desmond-"In about 15 minutes you're either going to be very right, or very wrong, brother. You want to shoot me? Shoot me. but I'm not hanging around..."
Jack-"Why are you running?! You don't even know what you're running from!"
Desmond-"I remember you...running...I know you. I met you... Los Angeles. I was training, yeah? You twisted your ankle..."
Jack-"Stop."
Desmond-"You're a doctor, right? There was this girl...you were worried...you said, you said you failed her. That was you."
Jack feels that doesn't matter.
Desmond wonders if the girl is okay; what happened to her? How can Jack say it doesn't matter?
Jack blurts out, "I married her!"   He cries.
Desmond-"Right, and you're... you're not married to her anymore, then?"
He picks up his pack and tells Jack, "See you in another life, yeah?"

The timer- 5:00
Locke asks Sayid if he can fix it.
Sayid-"This man, whoever he was, replaced the motherboard. The power transformer is blown."
Locke-"Don't you need to know why?"
Sayid-"All I need to know is that the timer is counting down to something. And that this computer needs to be repaired. I'm sure you'll tell me why once I've done so."

Kate finds the breaker, flips the switch and the lights turn on.
The alarm sounds and the timer passes 4 minutes and starts its beeping sequence.
Hurley seems concerned, "Oh, what's that?"
Locke is panicked, wanting Sayid to work faster, "You have to..."
Sayid-"I know what I have to do.   Reconnected the processor.   Replaced the transformer."    He turns it on and Kate wonders what happens now.
Locke-"There was a code. He made me enter it."
Concerned Hurley asks, "What code?"
Sayid-"Do you remember what it is?"
Locke-"4, 8..."
Hurley's getting worked up, "Wait a minute..."
Locke-"15, 16..."
Hurley-"Dude, I'm serious, stop."
Locke-"Hugo, this is not the time or the place."
Hurley-" Yeah, well, I think it is."
Locke-"23..."
Hurley-"What is this thing? You don't even know what it does. We need..."
Locke-"32..."
Hurley-"You know what? Forget it, go ahead, do your thing."
Jack appears, "It's not 32. It's 42. He just told me, Desmond. The last numbers 42."
Locke-"You're sure."
Jack-"Yeah, I'm sure."
Locke enters 42, and is about to press execute but suggests Jack do it, "You have to do it."
Jack-" You do it yourself, John."
Locke-"No, you saw the film, Jack. This is a...This is a two person job, at least."
{This has been a 2 person operation, Kelvin dies. Does Desmond take on this task completely by himself? He did it as a 1 man operation.}
Sayid-"This argument is irrelevant."
Jack doesn't want Sayid to interject.
Adamant Jack insists, "No. It's not real. Look, you want to push the button, you do it yourself."
Locke-"If it's not real, then what are you doing here, Jack? Why did you come back? Why do you find it so hard to believe?"
Jack-"Why do you find it so easy?!"
Locke-"It's never been easy!"
The timer shows 1 04. A 'warning' type alarm sounds.
Kate-"Maybe you should just do it."
Jack-"No. It's a button."
Locke-"I can't do this alone, Jack. I don't want to. It's a leap of faith, Jack."
Timer 00 27.
Jack goes to the computer and pushes the button with 1 second to spare.
The timer resets to 108 00.
Locke sits down at the computer, "I'll take the first shift."
Jack exits.
The timer counts down.
Orientation is a great episode!  A very interesting episode.
Faith vs. free will.   Desmond continued to push the button believing he's saving the world. Jack still needs fact/proof of what is to be before he acts upon this button thingy. As humans, how do we choose between making a decision based on facts/proof or faith?   If a person only believes in one or the other, is every single decision made in life based solely on those factors?
Even though this episode shows us that pushing the button could be important... is it real?
Let's look beyond something here, let's take the "button pushing" out of the equation for a moment. The dialogue that is coming out of Jack's mouth could be the truth.   Are the things they are experiencing real or really happening?   Are they part of a psychology, human behavior study, an experiment, a project, an adventure/journey...a game? I think YES!!

Things to Note...Questions to ask...
Real. Not Real.
This is the third time we’ve seen the scene with Locke, Desmond, Jack and Kate inside the hatch.
Replacements.
Marvin Candle gives a brief history of the D.I.. Why would he need to do that? Wouldn't the men in that station already be privy to the "background"?
Marvin "Candle" =Light.
Timer. Time out. Reset.

Jack asks Des “What’s going to happen?”   And in Adrift Locke asks Des, “What’s going to happen?”
What is with Desmond and the electronics?  And why doesn't he give Sayid a chance to fix the computer before declaring "it's over" and running off?
Desmond leaves the photo of him and Penny behind!
The computer needs to be fixed.
I feel like Desmond is rambling about a story or retelling a story.
Does Desmond get back in his boat at this point?  Did he run for days then get in his boat? We know he sails around for 2 weeks- That would mean the Lostie's would only have had access to the Swan for about 2 weeks.
Faith. Fact
Head. Crazy. Insane.
Feelings. Hurt. Alone. Fear. Scared. Anger. Frustration. Failure. Uncertainty.
Kate finds the pantry then Hurley enters the pantry.
Hurley is not a fan of the hatch and computer, I wonder why.
We get lots of info from the film even though it is edited. Obviously someone doesn't want people to know ALL the information.
How many lives can these people have?
Jack is the first man in the room to push the EXECUTE button.
Please watch the Orientation film again. Listen to it, but look at what is being shown to us. Plus, do you see Michael anywhere in there?  I'm not saying that it is for sure (yeah), but if you look in two scenes you can see a man with a very large afro, who looks like- in profile- like Michael. The camera is very careful to show us 'just enough' of this person, but not enough to be positive. Maybe it's a look alike/replica. If it is Michael, that would support my thoughts of him being "connected" to the "Island".

Vocabulary and Research...
♦  Code- In communications a code is a rule for converting a piece of information (for example, a letter, word, phrase or gesture) into another form or representation (one sign into another sign), not necessarily of the same type. In communications and information processing, encoding is the process by which information from a source is converted into symbols to be communicated.
- Code (cryptography) device for hiding the meaning of a message.
- Code (computer programming) or machine code, any sequence of statements and/or declarations written in some human-readable computer programming language.
- Coding theory, branch of mathematics and computer science dealing with data transmission.
-Decoding is the reverse process, converting these code symbols back into information understandable by a receiver.
-CODE- Computationally Oriented Display Environment.
♦  Cheat Code-Creates an advantage beyond normal game play, usually to make the game easier. Cheats include advantages such as invulnerability ("God mode") or an infinite amount of some resource such as ammunition. Cheats may also create unusual or interesting effects which do not necessarily make the game easier to play, such as making enemies tougher, or giving characters (including enemies) different appearances, such as large heads. Cheats often take the form of "secrets" placed by game developers, usually to reward dedicated players. Cheats may be activated from within the game itself (a cheat code implemented by the original game developers); or created by third-party software (a game trainer) or hardware.
Orientation (Mental)- Function of the mind.
- Orientation (Housing)-The position of a building with respect to the sun, a concept in building design.
Orientation (Computer vision), an image processing concept related to one-dimensional characterization of a local image.
♦  Orienteering, a sport involving map orientation.
♦  Conduit- is an open source synchronization program for GNOME.
- Someone who coveys information (prophet or spokesperson)or in secret (mole or informant)
- Something that conveys information such as TV, computer or website.
♦  Channels for carrying water or other fluids.
♦  Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) is a transthoracic interpretation of the electrical activity of the heart over time captured and externally recorded by skin electrodes. It is a noninvasive recording produced by an electrocardiographic device.
The etymology of the word is derived from electro, because it is related to electrical activity, cardio, Greek for heart, and graph, a Greek root meaning "to write".   The electrical waves can be measured at electrodes placed at specific points on the skin.

Since the previous episode I've wondered if all roads lead to Desmond or the Swan.
Jack and Locke watch the orientation film as an introduction to the Swan, but it's really their orientation to the "Island".
Jack and John sit together to watch the film...I sometimes feel like we're seeing two halves of the same person.   And sometimes I feel like the other Lostie's are aspects of  Jack, John and/or each other.  Weird, I know.

We witness the Islanders pursue goals within the "Island" setting.  What if all this, this journey, is more of a live action role playing game, integrating the use of computers and projectors in some way?

Feeling pain, whether it is deep emotional pain, mental, spiritual, or even physical, these are the demons John, Jack and the gang are fighting.    Their hearts are heavy indeed, but one of the goals seems to be to learn how to get over past issues and move forward.

But on to the matter at hand...here is their orientation into this part of their journey.

Disclaimer: I never claim to know everything about the show and my thoughts by no means make me right. The things I share here are my views and/or opinions. I don't claim to catch every single detail either. You all know I hate spoilers, and I stand clear of reading certain sites as to not take me off my own course of research. The one thing I don't need to do here is rehash all of the obvious clues from an episode, we all know what they are. Understood? Good. Let the fun begin! I'll only note things that I know come up as clues later, but need to be noted when they first show up and things I find that will be of importance. It will get very exciting as we progress into the story.

Flashes Before Your Eyes.

Let's talk about LOST! Flashes before Your Eyes.
Desmond walks down to the beach.

Charlie and Hurley are going through Sawyers stash. {Note we see Charlie in the mirror. Dharma food and wine, Watership Down and other books, Brezza cigarettes.} Hurley doesn't really know about this going through Sawyers tent and ransacking his "stash" bit.
Charlie tells Hurley, "See, you're looking at this all wrong. He would want us to do this."
Hurley-"...Yeah, that sounds exactly like Sawyer."
Charlie goes on to say how Sawyer stole all that stuff in the first place. After all, people need food, medical supplies and shocking amounts of pornography. {Note cover Playpen} Desmondo heads over to join the guys. Hurley asks him if they found Eko.
Desmond-"I need you come with me. Both of you."
Desmond leads them out to the jungle to meet up with Locke and Sayid.   Locke informs them Eko is dead.
Sayid- "We found his body in the jungle. Buried him yesterday."
Charlie asks how he died.   Locke and Sayid look at each other then Locke reveals "The Island killed him."
Charlie wants to know what does it mean...the island killed him.
Locke-"You know what it means." {Charlie knows what that means?! WOW!}

Desmond looks distracted, almost like he's thinking or even remembering.   Locke goes on to say "With the doctor gone the camps on edge enough without people having to worry about what's out here in the jungle. They're gonna look to you two to see how to react.   So when I tell everyone what happened... I need you two to keep things calm."

Hurley notices Desmond is distracted; Desmond is looking around.
Hurley asks, "Hey guys. What's wrong with Desmond?"   All of a sudden Desmond takes off running and they run after him.

Desmond takes his shirt and shoes off and dives into the water. Charlie notices that Sun is with Aaron, which indicates Claire went for a walk.

Desmond retrieves drowning Claire from the water.   Charlie runs up to the water's edge; he's freaking out! Desmond forcefully tells him, "Get back Charlie. I know what I'm doing."
Charlie's freaking-"She breathing? She's not breathing?"
Desmond revives her! {Yeah!} Charlie is happy.  Desmond literally pushes Charlie out of the way and carries Claire to her tent.  Charlie wants to know how he knew she was drowning.
Hurley- "I'll tell you how he knew. That guy. He sees the future, Dude."

Desmond sits on the beach looking at the photo of him and Penny. Claire comes over and sees the pic and comments, "She's beautiful."
Desmond tells Claire her name is "Penny…Penelope."
Claire admits she's still shaken up from her near drowning, "I go swimming almost every day. The undertow just grabbed me. If you hadn't…"
Charlie walks over with the baby, "Claire, I thought you were only gonna be 5 minutes. Aaron's starving."    He gives Desmond a nod.
Claire goes on to say "Thank you for being there" to Desmond.

Charlie and Hurley walk through the camp. Hurley tells Charlie that Locke doesn't know about anything except knives and fishing.
Charlie-"There's nothing to know. I don't buy the pre-cognitive insanity rubbish. If the bearded wonder could predict the future he wouldn't have ended up here, would he?" {Are they both talking about the same guy or not?}

Inside Sawyers tent with the stash, Charlie says they are gonna have to find out what happened to Desmond.
Smart Hurley says, "You do realize he's gonna know your plan before you even come up with it, dude."
Charlie-"In that case were gonna have to get him really bloody drunk."
He picks up the bottle of MacCutcheon. {In Sawyers stash! Who does it belong to?}
Charlie and Hurley approach Desmond who is busy on the beach getting ready to build a fire. Hurley prompts Charlie to "Say it, Dude."
Charlie takes the bait and says to Desmond, "This morning, I'm sorry I wasn't more grateful. Thank you for helping Claire not drown."
Desmond-"No harm done."
Charlie brought a peace offering to make the truce official.   He takes out the bottle of liquor.   Desmond declines the offer as he's spent a wee bit too much time drunk as of late.
Charlie's insulted, "Too good for us, brother?"
Charlie takes his drink says they'll go somewhere else.    Desmond wants to know "what kind of whiskey is that?"
Charlie-"MacCutcheon."
Desmond is amused and yes, he will have it!    Charlie offers him a mug/cup...But a cup or a mug won't do...
Desmond-"The bottle, brother. If you've come here to drink. Then let’s drink."
Desmond takes the bottle, pulls the cork out with his teeth and takes one hell of a swig! "Cheers!"

At night the three drunk wise men are singing about a one legged chick, like there's no tomorrow.
Hurley-"Song about drinking and fighting and girls with one leg"
Desmond and Charlie simultaneously say "One leg and a heart of gold." {It's my opinion that Charlie is way less drunk than the other two guys. The bottle's label is torn up.}
Charlie being very serious and "sober" asks Des, "How did you know Claire was drowning?"
Drunk Desmond says he can hear her calling for help.
Hurley-"No, You were like a mile away."
Des-"I suppose I've got good hearing."
Charlie asks he heard the lightening as well.  Desmond looks confused.
Charlie-"Just by chance you pitch your little rod outside Claire's tent. Two hours later lightening strikes."

Desmond gets up and thanks him for the drink; drops the bottle at Charlie and walks away. Charlie wants to know what Des is doing.
Charlie-"You think because you turned some key that makes you a hero? You're no hero brother. I don't know how it is what you're doing. But I know a coward when I see one."

Desmond tackles Charlie and yells at him, "You don't want to know what happened to me when I turned that key. You don't want to know."
Beeping Alarm. The countdown clock shows 1 second, then 00000 and it turns to red and black. We hear System Failure. Des takes a key out of a book that was hidden behind other books. He runs into the computer room where Locke is hanging out waiting to see what happens next. Des pushes a computer out of the way to reveal a 'hidden hatch'.
Desmond tells Locke, "See you in another life brother" and heads down below.
Stuff is flying everywhere in the Swan hatch.

Down below Desmond lifts up the "Caution System Termination" lid.  He crosses himself, says I love you Penny and turns the key.
Literally, his life 'Flashes' before his eyes.
Eye:
Desmond is clean shaven and laying on a wood floor. There is red paint spilled all over. {He is wearing a jumpsuit similar to DHARMA.} He's waking up. Things/vision are blurry. Penny runs and gets ice. {Paint can FUTU…Also note that Desmond is a shitty painter!}  Desmond had red paint across his neck. He wants to know what's happening.
Penny- "Well, what's happening is the result of combining ladders, painting the ceiling and alcohol."

He looks around, things still a bit blurry; then clear. {There are things that could be representative of the island. It looks like 2 sets of stacked coins on the table, fish, boxes marked CD'S, PHOTOS.} This is his flat. Penny tells him if he wants her to feel more at home he might start calling it our flat.
Penny checks out Desmond by holding up three fingers and asks how many. {Note how she does this}
Des is happy.  He kisses/hugs her, but he looks confused.

Desmond is standing in front of the mirror putting on a tie. The clock displays 108; he looks puzzled.  {Familiar}
Penny comes from behind to help him with the tie. We see her reflection too. {Song ‘Building a Mystery’ in the background.} She tells him he has paint on his neck.
Pen-"How's that concussion?"
Desmond-"A severe head injury is a small price to pay for the pleasure of having you move into my humble…is rat trap accurate?"
Penny-"No."
Desmond is going to meet her father. She tells him he "really don't need a job from my father, Des."
Desmond- "It's not about the job. I want him to respect me.”
Penny- "And respect you he shall. But if for some reason he's too daft to see how brilliant you are, it’s not the end of the world."
All of a sudden Desmond hears the familiar sound of the "Island"  computer beeping. He runs into the kitchen and looks at the microwaveOnto top the microwave are three bottles, a pitcher, a can of chicken broth and two spices {I think}. Penny takes a cup of containers of  coffee out of the microwave. She sees he looks confused. He reveals he's had a bit of Déjà vu!
Desmond walks into a large building and tells the lady at the reception counter that he's Desmond Hume, to see Mr. Widmore.    A delivery man tells the receptionist he has a parcel for 815. This too confuses Desmond.  He has a "Flash" of the computer and countdown clock in the hatch. {Flash within a Flash} The receptionist informs Desmond "Mr. Widmore is ready for you."

Desmond is in Widmore's office.  On Desmond's right are a table with liquor and two lamps on it; it's set up like a bar.   There's a replica of Widmore's sailboat, and to Desmond's left is a large painting. Desmond is sitting across from Widmore who is reading files on his desk.   Des sees the large painting of the polar bear, Namaste now on his right and mirror image. Desmond looks at it {Knowing it's out of place, perhaps?}
Widmore looks over his Resume. "You didn't tell me you were an actor, Desmond."
Desmond- "No. It's actually set design. For the Royal Shakespeare Company."
Note the table is back on his right side. We learn he didn't graduate from university as he had to look after his three brothers after his father died. He does not have any military experience either.
Desmond compliments Widmore's boat. {Replica} Widmore shares his foundation is sponsoring a solo race around the world.  All of a sudden Desmond has "Flashes" of Libby's boat, landing at the island, Kelvin. {Flash within a Flash}

Widmore acknowledges Desmond being distracted for a second. Then tells him he will see to it that he has a position in their administrative department.   It's not the most glamorous duty, but it's a start. He'll speak to Human Resources.
Desmond admits to Widmore he didn't go there to interview for a position in the company, but to ask for his daughters hand in marriage. They've been together two years, Pen's moving in and I love her. "Your permission would mean everything to me."

Widmore is impressed; it's a noble gesture.   He asks Desmond if he knows anything about whiskey. He introduces him to the 60 year old MacCutcheon. It's named after Anderson MacCutcheon, esteemed admiral from the Royal Navy. He retired with more medals than any many before or since. {He takes 2 glasses and the bottle over to his desk.} "Moved to the highlands to see out his remaining years. He was a great man. The whiskey is his crowning achievement."
Widmore pours a shot into one glass only. "This swallow is more than you can make in a month...To share it with you would be a waste.  And a disgrace to the great man who made it. Because you, Hume. Will never be a great man."   He goes on to say he's not worthy of drinking his whiskey, so he can't be worthy of his daughter.

Outside the building Desmond throws his tie on the ground in frustration.  He turns around and there's Charlie playing guitar on the street corner. {The song Wonderwall} Desmond realizes he knows him. Charlie's handmade sign says "Musical Stylings of Charlie Hieronymus Pace Donations Accepted.”
Someone donates a 5-er.    Charlie even comments to someone "You can leave your number if you want." {LOL!}
Desmond asks him how do I know you, "Where do I know you from?"
Charlie-"I don't know. But I'd remember if I could get some help."
Des has a Flash of the day of the implosion and Charlie.  {FLASH within a FLASH}
{CHARLIE USES FORMAL NAME BUT DOESN'T USE CHARLES. Plus his name on the sign is pretty much the same color blue of his eyes.}
Desmond-"It was in the hatch, I remember seeing you. There was a computer. There was a button...We were on an island."
Charlie- “We are on an island, Mate. This is England."
Desmond gets a little frantic, "It was real! I remember!"
Charlie-"All right... This is why we don't do drugs."
Desmond-"No! I remember! This all happened before!"
Desmond starts to recall what he remembers already happening... "This happened today...This...He said I wasn't worthy, Then I took off my tie...I lost my tie...Penny said...Then it started to rain."
And yes, it started to rain. Desmond looks up.
We see a man talking about a woman's Thesis.
Donovan tells the woman, “Your thesis is a bit neat. Run the wild card part which is unpredictability.  Run the same test 10 times, you'll get 10 different outcomes. That's what makes life so wonderfully chaotic.”
Desmond runs in to speak to Donovan.
Donovan- ”Case in point. Who could have known that a drenched Scotchman would appear in this rotunda?"
Desmond needs to ask him what he knows about time travel.

In a pub the two mates sit over drinks.
Donovan asks, "Are you bloody insane?"
Desmond just wants to know if it's possible.
Donovan-"Which part? The island full of mysterious hatches or the computer which keeps the world from ending?"
Desmond is serious, "Forget you're my best mate, right? As a Physicist. Is it possible that I somehow managed to go back in time? I'm now living my life over again?"
Donovan laughs but Desmond doesn't think it's funny.
Donovan-"Penny's father berates you for not being a great man, Walla, you've dreamed a future where push a button to save the world."
Desmond insists these things are not in his head, "I remember things."
Donovan calls him on it and asks him what will happen next?
Desmond-"It doesn't work like that. Just bits and pieces."
Donovan-"How wonderfully convenient."
The song Make Your Own Kind Of Music comes on the jukebox. Like a light bulb goes on in Desmond's head he says, "I remember this night. Graybridge come back from two goals down in the final 2 minutes, win the game, it's a bloody miracle!"

He goes on to say what will happen next. {Note the game shows ads for Expose, Apollo Bars, Mr. Clucks chicken, Oceanic}... and Jimmy Lennon will come through that door and hit the bartender right in the head with a cricket bat 'cause he owes him money. "Watch!"    Only those things don't happen. {Note cricket is a bug.}
Donovan- "There's no such thing as time travel, Des. From what I understand, true love can be just as unlikely. So, if you love Penny, stop messing about. And marry her."

Desmond enters his flat. Penny fell asleep reading a book in their bed; there's a glass of wine on the bedside table. She wakes up and remarks Des smells like the pub.
Des informs her he didn't get the job, "Your father was lovely. We just both agree that I wasn't exactly qualified."
She wants to celebrate that "fate has spared you a miserable existence under the employ of Widmore Industries".   She wants to take him out tomorrow for lobsters on the pier; her treat.   Desmond doesn't feel his failure to impress her father is reason to celebrate.
Penny says the occasion is "I love you."
Desmond-"Why do you love me?"
Penny- "Because you're a good man."   Desmond gets emotional.
Penny tenderly holds his face and asks, "Des. Where are you?"
Desmond- "I'm right here."
Desmond is in an antique store checking out diamond rings. We see his reflection in the glass case. {There are vessels and; vases all over the place. Every shape and size. Clocks, watches, huge globe, stairs/steps.}

Miss Hawking asks Desmond, "Never done this before, Have you?"
Desmond-"Is it that obvious?"
Hawking-“I can always tell the first timers." {Hear the bell toll in the background.} He's not a man of means but she has just the thing for him. She shows him a from another ring case. {Clocks behind her.} "This won't blind any Queens to be sure. But still has the sparkle of life." {Marquise cut diamond.}
He'll take it!
Hawking-"No you won't. Give me the ring. Give it here."
Desmond doesn't understand. She goes on to explain this is wrong; he doesn't buy the ring,"You have second thoughts, you walk right out that door."
She wants the ring back. "You don't buy the ring, Desmond."

She not only knows his name but knows he doesn't ask Penny to marry; he breaks her heart.   Breaking her heart is what drives him in a few short years to enter the sailing race to prove her father wrong. Which brings him to the island, where he spends the next three years of his life entering numbers into the computer, until he is forced to turn that fail safe key. "And if you don't do those things Desmond David Hume, every single one of us is dead. So give me that sodding ring." {Chimes in the background}.
Desmond-"Who are you?"
She nonchalantly asks if he likes chestnuts.

Outside, Miss Hawking buys a bag of chestnuts. She directs Desmond's attention to a man. "That man over there is wearing red shoes." {She’s wearing a circular dragon pin. Alchemy} She just thought it was a bold fashion choice worth noting.

Desmond-"This isn't really happening, is it?...I've had a concussion. You're my subconscious."
Hawking-"Am I?"
Desmond-"You're here to talk me out of marrying Penny."
He says it won't work but Hawking says it will.
Desmond-”There is no Island. There is no button. It's madness. I love her. She loves me. I 'm gonna spend the rest of my life with her."
Miss Hawking insists he won't.
A collapse at the construction site behind them kills a man with the red shoes. {We see more than one pair of red shoes at the site} Desmond realizes she knew that was going to happen and he's upset that she didn't do anything to stop it. Hawking goes on to explain it wouldn't matter if she warned the man his fate would still play out. "The universe unfortunately has a way of course correcting. That man was supposed to die. That was his path. Just as it's your path to go to the island. You don't do it because you choose to, Desmond. You do it because you're supposed to."

Desmond is determined to meet Penny in an hour and give her the ring, "I can choose whatever I want."
Miss Hawking-"You may not like your path, Desmond. But pushing that button is the only truly great thing that you will ever do."
Determined Desmond asks, "How much for the ring?"
Hawking walks away from him.
Desmond stops in front of an Armed Forces Careers recruitment office. He looks at the two signs- The Royal Scots Honor Adventure {yes the word honor is misspelled!} Desmond touches his head; wondering/confused.  He walks away from the building.
{Did Des realize the word was misspelled; giving him a clue he may be dreaming or in an altered state perhaps?}

Penny meets Desmond. {Big Ben! She's right on time.}
A photographer asks them, "Take your photo, lovebirds?"
They take a picture so they can show the grandkids. They choose a marina backdrop for the photo. {Palm trees.}
The photographer counts to two and snaps the photo. "Instant classic."
They purchase one photo for 5 quid {out of 20} "You're a lovely couple. Small price to pay for the memories. Right?"
Desmond stares at the photo, remembering, "I couldn't go through with it." {WOW! That's important! He remembered!}
He tells Penny he can't do this relationship. Penny gets upset. He gives her excuses for the break up. Penny tries to make him understand she chose to be with him.
But Desmond feels,"Love is not enough. Being a good man is not enough."
Penny's confused.
Desmond rambles, "This is all happening too soon. You're moving in. You're changing things. I don't even like red..."
She slaps him; tells him not to pretend that he doesn't care, "And don't you dare re-write history. I left my expensive flat because you were too proud to live there. Remember?.... Have the decency to admit you're doing this because you're a coward."
Desmond says he sorry, "We're not supposed to be together."
Penny walks away and Desmond throws the ring into the water! {We get a shot from under the water looking up. Amazing!}
Desmond is in the pub. We see the bottle of MacCutcheon next to a bottle of old scotch whiskey. He orders a pint of the cheapest; he's celebrating the biggest mistake of his life. The worst part is he's pretty sure he's made it before. The bartender calls it Déjà vu.
The song Make Your Own Kind Of Music comes on. {Jukebox is a Venus CD player} The football/soccer games ends with the win he told Donovan about. Desmond thinks he just got the day wrong, "I was right. I was off by a night. I heard the song and then, I remember this. I'm not crazy. I can still change things."

Jimmy Lennon comes in with his cricket bat wanting his money. Desmond tells the bartender to duck! Desmond gets hit with the bat and is knocked out!

Flash of Desmond turning the key.

Trees:
Desmond is waking up in the jungle; naked!  His head hurts and there's blood on him.  Yummy Naked Desmond runs through the jungle and comes upon the imploded hatch.  He is upset. On the ground there are vinyl records and the picture of him and Penny.
Desmond pleads, "Please. Let me go back. Let me go back one more time. I'll do it right. I'll do it right this time. I'm sorry Penny. I'll change it. I'll change it." He cries.

Desmond with Claire; Charlie's voice asking how he knew Claire was drowning.
It is night with the three guys drinking MacCutcheon Whiskey.
Charlie- "You hear the lightening as well?"    We see the golf club lightening rod.
Charlie continues, "Just by chance you pitch your little rod outside Claire's tent. Two hours later lightening strikes.”
We see the rain and lightening. Charlie calls him a coward.
Desmond tackles him. "You don't want to know what happened to me!"
Hurley breaks them up.
Drunk and troubled Desmond is crying, "It doesn't matter what you do. You can't change it."
Hurley makes the crazy sign regarding Desmond's mental state.   Charlie helps Desmond to his tent.
Desmond tells Charlie he's a good man and apologizes for trying to strangle him. {Des tried to kill him!}
Determined Charlie says, "Desmond, You are going to tell me what happened to you."
Desmond-"When I turned that key. My life flashed before my eyes. And then I was back in the jungle. Still on this bloody island. But those flashes, Charlie. Those flashes they didn't stop."
Charlie asks if that's how he knew to save Claire.
Desmond-"I wasn't saving Claire, Charlie. I was saving you."
He goes on to say it was Charlie who dove in to save Claire. Charlie looks confused by this statement. {Last we knew Charlie didn’t swim.}
He tells Charlie about the lightening, etc.. "The Universe has a way of course correcting. But I can't stop it forever... No matter what I try to do Charlie. You're gonna die."

Flashes Before Your Eyes is a Great Episode!!!!!

Things to note...Questions to ask...
Mirrors. Mirror image. Reflection. Reflect.
Head injury. In the head. Concussion. Drunk. Blurry vision. Confusion. Disorientation. Crazy. Insane. Forget. Memory. Deja Vu. Altered state. Dream. Wish. Game.
✈ Ring. Rotunda. Circle. Loop. Do-over.
✈ Desmond wears a DHARMA-like jumpsuit in his Flash
Penny tells him it's not the end of the world if her daddy doesn't respect him.
Was Desmond waiting for the delivery of flight 815?   "A Parcel."
✈  Things being out of place/wrong for Desmond.  Such as the painting in Widmore's office on the right when it should be on the left. Mirror image of painting. The word honor misspelled in the recruitment poster.
✈  Desmond worked in the theater doing set design. We was almost a doctor once and a priest/monk/brother.  He did not graduate from university, so how would he have become a doctor?
✈  Photo backdrop. Paint. Scene. Set. Theater. Re-write.
✈  Are there clues to the comic book?
✈  Clues to people, less one limb.
✈  I can't let go of the beautiful shot from the under the water perspective when Desmond throws Penny's ring away.
✈  Could Desmond just be having Flashes of Memory,  Blended/blurred images of real and manipulated memory/experiences in Flashes?   Maybe there's a "bug" in the system.
✈  Did he physically time travel or was that a metaphor or a figure of speech?
✈  EYES. EYES IN THE FLASHES!!! GO LOOK!
✈  Images/things in Desmond's Flashes show ties to the "Island", other Islanders and their stories. Coincidence? HA!
✈  Des was never supposed to marry Penny.
✈  "That man was supposed to die."- Just as Charlie is supposed to.
✈  Miss Hawkins did manage to talk Desmond into his role on the "Island". She conned him, manipulated him; told him that would be the only great thing he will ever do. To Desmond, that may be the great thing he wants/needs to prove Penny's father wrong.
✈  "…every single one of us is dead"- Hawking.   Is she speaking of the "Island" and the Others, perhaps?!
✈  Have the decency to admit you're doing this because you're a coward." He's not breaking up with her because he's a coward. He's breaking up because he wants her and her father to know he did something great.
✈  Did Desmond fail by not continuing to push the button? Now Widmore will never respect him.

Vocabulary and Research...
Chestnut is a genus of eight or nine species of deciduous trees and shrubs in the beech family Fagaceae, native to warm temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The name also refers to the edible nuts they produce. Chestnut trees thrive on neutral and acidic soils, such as soils derived from granite, sandstone or schist. Chestnuts grown for nut production are grown in orchards.
Vases: In Buddhism- Known as a Treasure Vase or Bumpa: Representing inexhaustible treasure and wealth.
Tinnitus can be perceived in one or both ears or in the head. It is usually described as a ringing noise, but in some patients it takes the form of a high pitched whining, buzzing, hissing, humming, or whistling sound, or as ticking, clicking, roaring, "crickets" or "tree frogs" or "locusts", tunes, songs, or beeping.
Concussion:  Latin concutere ("to shake violently").  Headache is the most common symptom. Other symptoms include dizziness, vomiting, nausea, lack of motor coordination, difficulty balancing, or other problems with movement or sensation. Visual symptoms include light sensitivity, seeing bright lights, blurred vision, and double vision. Tinnitus,or a ringing in the ears, is also commonly reported.
108 Mala Beads: Buddhist mantra meditation counting beads.

We're going to explore two ways we can look at this episode. It will be a long lesson, so go grab a snack and a drink and meet me back here.
Well! What are you waiting for?!….

Okay, Desmond traveled back and forth through the time/space continuum. Huh???   How was only Desmond able to do this? Eko couldn't do it and Locke couldn't. Charlie didn't even take this "trip", only Desmond did. Interesting, huh?   Please read through the items I researched as they may pertain to the story.
Let’s break down a few things.

* A pre-lucid dream is one in which the dreamer considers the question, "Am I asleep and dreaming?" He or she may or may not come to the correct conclusion.   Such experiences are liable to occur to people who are deliberately cultivating lucid dreams, but may also occur spontaneously to those with no prior intention to achieve lucidity in dreams.
* A false awakening is an event in which someone dreams they have awakened from sleep. This illusion of having awakened is very convincing to the person.  After a false awakening, people will usually dream of performing daily morning rituals, believing they have truly awakened. A dream in which a false awakening takes place is sometimes colloquially referred to as a "double dream", or a "dream within a dream" {OR MAYBE A FLASH WITHIN A FLASH? Hmm?!}   Certain aspects of life may be dramatized, or out of place in false awakenings. Things may seem wrong, details, like the painting on a wall, not being able to talk or difficulty reading (reading in lucid dreams is often difficult or impossible). In some experiences, the human senses are heightened, or changed.  For instance, one may be able to see things in greater detail, or lesser detail, or one may feel an intense burst of fear and anxiety, or possibly pleasure. And there are "time" issues. No "sense of time", etc.
* Some believe déjà vu is the memory of dreams. Though the majority of dreams are never remembered, a dreaming person can display activity in the areas of the brain that process long-term memory. It has been speculated that dreams read directly into long-term memory, bypassing short-term memory entirely. In this case, déjà vu might be a memory of a forgotten dream with elements in common with the current waking experience. This may be similar to another phenomenon known as déjà rêvé, or "already dreamed."
* FLASH- to be visible briefly. - A very short amount of time.
- The Flash is a name shared by several fictional comic book super heroes from the D C comic’s universe. - Flash Gordon, a comic hero and space traveler. - Flash Thompson, classmate of Peter Parker (Spider-Man)
- Thomas "Flash" Gordon played for the Boston Red Socks. I read a book by Stephen King called 'The girl who loved Tom Gordon'. Great book!
- In photography a flash is a device that produces an instantaneous flash of artificial light to help illuminate a scene.
- To expose one's naked body in public briefly. Of course Des woke up in jungle naked! Naked like when the Terminator time travels to L.A.. He's naked.
- To release the pressure from a pressurized vessel. Des turned the fail safe key.
* Anagram of Flash is the Plural form of half. Alternative spelling of halves.
* A flashback also is a similar recurrence of the effects of a hallucinogenic drug.
*A flashback is an interjected scene that takes the narrative back in time from the current point the story has reached. Flashbacks are often used to recount events that happened prior to the story's primary sequence of events or to fill in crucial back story. In the opposite direction, a flash forward reveals events that will occur in the future.
- A sudden, short, temporary burst of light.
* Flash memory in computing is a re-writable memory chip that retains its data without a power supply.
* Flash of Insight:  Zen Buddhism- A Koan is riddle-like puzzle used for teaching in Zen Buddhism. It cannot be solved by reason, but instead forces the student to solve it through a flash of insight.

I must bring up The Orchid, Station 6; although it doesn't have to do with this episode. Dr. Halliwax aka Candle aka Wickmund tells us about the "Island" and some sort of casimir effect. All three versions of this guy's name have to do with candles...Light.   What the fuck is that about? Ahhhh! Oh well, that's a whole other part of the story!

Casimir Effect/Worm Holes…Time Travel:
Exotic matter with negative energy density is required to stabilize a wormhole. Morris, Thorne and Yurtsever pointed out that the quantum mechanics of the Casimir effect can be used to produce a locally mass-negative region of space-time, and suggested that negative effect could be used to stabilize a wormhole to allow faster than light travel. A similar analysis can be used to explain Hawking radiation that causes the slow “evaporation” of black holes (although this is generally visualized as the escape of one particle from a virtual particle-antiparticle pair, the other particle having been captured by the black hole).
In physics, Hawking radiation is a thermal radiation with a black body spectrum predicted to be emitted by black holes due to “quantum effects.”
A detailed study of the quantum geometry of a black hole horizon has been made using Loop quantum gravity.
Loop quantum gravity (LQG), also known as loop gravity and quantum geometry, is a proposed quantum theory of space time which attempts to reconcile the seemingly incompatible theories of quantum mechanics and general relativity.
Loop quantum gravity (LQG) is a proposed theory of space time which is constructed with the idea of space time quantization via the mathematically rigorous theory of loop quantization. It preserves many of the important features of general relativity, while at the same time employing quantization of both space and time at the Planck scale in the tradition of quantum mechanics.

Worm holes. Yes! A way to get from point A to point B via space! Okay, time travel... I more than anybody want to believe Desmond time traveled in this episode, but how did he do it? In a vessel? A fucking DeLorean? A winged Unicorn? Or telepathically? If the implosion catapulted him to "time travel" how did he manage to get back? Wouldn't something have to propel/bring him back?
Let’s not forget that he didn't change anything by this "journey".   When he tried to intervene and got hit in the pub/bar and he woke up, that still didn't change anything/his path.   Hawking insists he doesn't buy the ring, but Des does buy the ring. That didn't change anything either. Of course, if it IS "time travel" then he always would have bought the ring.

Hawking must be an Other. By her showing up in Desmond's other centric episode {Photo at the church.} that tells me she's probably a part of the "Island".   But she is correct when she says the universe has a way of course correcting.   By Desmond still trying to do a couple of things differently in his "Flashes", it didn't matter; It didn't change anything.   He still ended up on the "Island" and without Penny; with a job he's told will save us. Nothing changed. This is what was to be, the universe wins.

Back to the whole lucid/waking dream/altered mind point.  Desmond sits in Widmore's office with a table and liquor to his right side. Then in a 'flash' the image on his right is a mirror image of the giant painting that was on his left side (painting with polar bear, Namaste, etc.) Then in a "Flash" it's all back the original way.   Next example is the army recruitment poster. Yes everyone found the misspelled word honor. We heard yet again this is a prop error. But let us not forget we learned that one of the ways a dreamer realizes he may be dreaming, but feels awake, is when things are out of place, words on signs are misspelled, things are backwards, wrong. ALSO there is no sense of time!

Could Desmond's "Flashes" be "Flashes"  of real and manipulated memory coming out in a dream state or altered state of consciousness?  Maybe, just maybe, when the hatch imploded he hit his friggin head and got a concussion!
What about Desmond knowing Charlie's fate over and over? Remember they are in a loop of sorts; doing things over, so maybe he's just remembering reoccurring go-rounds!  I.e. Des knowing Locke would make a speech, or the lightening, and even Charlie dying. Was he seeing the future or just remembering the past in a 'flash'?

Donovan uses Desmond as the "Case in point" when explaining running a test over and over and using the wild card of unpredictability... and you will get different results.
If they've done all this before, let’s say, run the experiment 10 times, maybe Charlie really did die in those other horrible events in those other "times".   Does the possibility exist that maybe the implosion gave Desmond the ability to "remember" and  not time travel!   By remembering what is about to come next he is able to intervene or even manipulate the situation; but that's only putting off the inevitable. But Charlie having to die is his "path", he is meant to die. Again, the "universe" wins.

Is time travel through space really happening here? It could be. We know there's a special way to get to the "Island".   But what if travel to and from is via a tunnel to the mainland?  Underwater perhaps? I'm just throwing ideas out there. We also assume time runs different on the "Island". It must, but I wonder how?!! Maybe there just is NO sense of time or purpose for time on the "Island". It keeps me up at night, wondering!!!
I have been hoping since before The Lost Experience ARG that we were going to find out more about the numbers. I wanted those numbers to be the mathematics equation to make time travel possible. It could be that we need Plutonium or Gigawatts (Jiggawatts) to make it happen! The purpose of the numbers may be being used in some other way, no pun intended. lol

So with two ways to look at this episode what did we really see here? Do I know what's going on? Hell No!
Time Travel or Flashes of insight/memories/Lucid/Waking Dreams and/or manipulated images?   Maybe it's a bit of the latter.  I wonder if there will be a Missing Piece Mobisode telling us more about naked Desmond in the jungle after the implosion?

Remember, I just present my research to you and you make your own decisions.

Flashes Before Your Eyes is just that...Desmond's life as he knows it, "Flashed" before his eyes.

Love to all who are "LOST" ™

The one thing I don't need to do here is rehash all of the obvious clues from an episode, we all know what they are. Understood? Good! Let the fun begin! I'll only note things that I know come up as clues later, but need to be noted when they first show up and things I find that will be of importance! It will get very exciting as we progress into the story.
