Orientation

Let's talk about LOST!    Orientation.
(Click the pics!)

Jin is yelling about the Others to Sawyer and Michael. {His hands are free.}
 Sawyer goes to attack the Big Other but he knocks him out, hits Michael with a big stick and then hits and drags Jin into the jungle.
The Others are literally dragging the three Castaway's through the jungle in three individual nets. They toss the three men down into a pit; a dug out hole in the ground. Groggy Michael wants to know where his boy is.   The big dude closes a hatch door made of sticks on them.

In the Swan hatch Desmond fires a shot. “Do you want him to die? Put it down.”
Jack-“Is this what you were talking about, Locke? Is this your destiny? All roads lead here.”
{Flash Whoosh}
Locke appears bored as he sits in at an anger management group meeting. Francine goes on about her pain that her mother stole $30 from her again and she wants it back.   Apparently her mother drinks. Locke scoffs. The lady Chief of the meeting asks if Locke has something to say, “John, you've been coming here for a month now...”

Amused Locke doesn’t think $30 is worth getting angry about.
The Chief-“Well, Francine feels like 30 dollars..."

Locke-“Francine feels a little too much, if you ask me. You all do. I mean, seriously…So-and-so never called me back, my mother stole 30 dollars from me.  I never even knew who my parents were.  A couple of years ago my uh, my birth mother found me, and uh, she told me I was special. {He gets teary} And… and through her I met my real father. Great news, right?! {He gets fired up} Well, he pretended to love me just long enough to steal my kidney because he had to have a transplant.  And then he dropped me back in the world like a piece of trash just like he did on the day that I was born. {He yells} You want your damned 30 dollars back? I want my kidney back!”

Locke is outside trying to light a cigarette but can’t.    In frustration he tosses it to the ground.
A woman from the meeting walks up to him and says, “Probably a good idea. You know if you get kidney cancer you've only got one.”
John thinks that’s funny and apologizes for ruining her meeting.
Helen-“Oh hell, you just said everything I've always wanted to say in there.   Most of the time I want to stand up and scream: get over it, freaks.”
John wonders why she doesn’t.
Helen-“I have to keep a cork in. Once I get all hot and bothered there's no stopping me. I guess you won't be coming back next week, huh?”
John, “No, not likely.”
Helen feels that’s too bad as she likes bald guys.
John replies he’s not bald. Flirty Helen can wait. They introduce themselves to each other.
{Flash Whoosh}
In the Swan hatch Jack wants to know where Kate is.   Desmond demands Jack lower his gun or he’ll blow Locke’s damned head off.
While Jack demands to know where Kate is, we see her crawling through the AC vent, remove a grate and lower herself into a dark room.    She opens the sliding door to the main living area to let in light and sees she’s in a stocked weapons storage vault/Armory.    Kate loads a rifle and quietly makes her way over to the three men arguing over putting down the gun.    Kate comes up behind Desmond and knocks him down with her rifle, a gun accidentally fires and hits the computer; it’s smoking.

Jack tells Desmond not to move but Locke is compassionate to Desmond being unarmed.
Jack yells-“He just had a gun pointed at your head!”
Desmond freaks out seeing the damaged computer, “Oh… What did you do? What did you do? We're all going to die. We're all going to die.”

Desmond explains to Jack if he doesn’t let him up and fix the computer they’re all gonna die.    Jack won’t let him up and tells him to “Stop moving or I swear to god…”
Desmond- “Look at the wall. {Timer 98 to 97} You see that? That's a timer. It's counting down. I've got to enter the code. I've got to push the button.”
Jack-“Or what?”
Concerned Locke feels Jack should let him up."
Jack- “Don't tell me what to do! {he asks Desmond} Or what? What's going to happen?”
Desmond looks up at Jack and asks, “Do I know you?
{Funny, Jack recognized Desmond when he saw him. Did Desmond forget that? It supposedly was only moments ago!}
Jack makes sure Kate “has” Desmond “covered” and lets Desmond get up.      Desmond runs over to the computer and pushes an on-off switch a few times to evaluate things.   Locke just looks at Jack.
{Flash Whoosh}
Helen is sleeping as Locke is quietly putting his shoes on.  Helen wakes up and wonders where he’s going.
Locke- “Nowhere, I… I … I just have trouble sleeping in a strange bed. No, it has nothing to do with you, Helen, I promise. I really like you. I'm sorry, I'll call you later.”
Helen is insulted.

It's daybreak and Locke is sitting in his red beetle in front of Cooper's house drinking coffee. He watches the guard at the house via the rear view mirror.   Cooper gets in the car and says “Morning” to John. John is stunned.
Cooper-“John, I know you like to drive through my neighborhood.   And I know that every now and then you like to park outside my house.   Now, I thought it might all stop when I moved, but uh, here you are. Now, I admit at first I thought it was funny… now it's just annoying. So how about you tell me what the hell it is you want.”
John is obviously in emotional pain so he asks Cooper “Why?”
Cooper-“There is no 'why'. Do you think you're the first person that ever got conned? You needed a father figure and I needed a kidney, and that's what happened. Get over it. And John, don't come back. You're not wanted.”
John takes a sip of coffee and breaks down; he’s deeply hurt.
{Flash Whoosh}
Desmond is looking through his bookshelf for something but also turns something electronic on; lights go on {you can hear it power up.}
Locke looks around.

Locke-“I don't think you need that, Kate {to Desmond} Whatever you're looking for, maybe I can help.”
Des-“Can you fix a computer? {Locke gives the ‘I don’t know’ gesture.} Then you can't help me, can you?”
Kate-“Sayid can fix a computer."
Locke thinks that a good idea, “Get him. Go and get Sayid."
Jack-“Can you get back up that rope?”
Kate- I won't have to, there's got to be a front door in this place.” {Really?}
Desmond- “Down the corridor to the left. Be persistent, the wheel sticks. {Desmond finds his jar of parts} Got ya.”
Desmond and Locke run to the computer.
Kate persistently turns the sticky wheel that opens the door.

Jack takes the jar hostage in an effort to get Desmond to come clean. “Now, you're going to tell me what's going on.”
Locke tells Jack they don’t have time for…"
Jack-“We're taking a time out.”
Desmond pleads with him.
Jack-“Look, you want to get to work you're going to tell me how you got here."
Desmond-“It was three years ago. I was on a solo race around the world, and my boat crashed into the reef, and then Kelvin came."
Locke-“Kelvin?"
Desmond-“Kelvin… he comes running out of the jungle, hurry, hurry, come with me. He brings me down here.  The first thing he does because there's beeping already, he types in the code, he pushes the button, and it stops. What was all that about, I say. Just saving the world, he says.”
Jack-"Saving the world?"
Desmond-"His words, not mine. So I started pushing the button, too. And we saved the world together for awhile and that was lovely.  Then Kelvin died…and now here I am all alone. The end.“
Jack hands Desmond the jar and the timer clicks down to 84.
Jack says to Locke, “Don't tell me you believe this. This is crazy. You think that makes sense, pushing a button? You're going to take his word for it?”
Locke feels his word is all they have.
As calmed down Desmond works on the computer he tells the guys they don’t have to take his word for it, “Watch the film.”
He directs them to the bookcase, “Top shelf, behind ‘Turn of the Screw’, projector's in the pantry.”
Locke hurries to get going on that!

 Locke finds Turn of the Screw, tosses it, then finds the film reel tin marked "Orientation" and shows it to Jack.

At the beach Hurley plays catch with no collar Vincent near the water. He runs over to help Sayid who is dragging a metal crate along the beach.
Hurley-"Dude, I've got to say, I didn't think we were going to get through the night. And I wasn't even here for that baby stealing part."
Sayid assures him it was very exciting.
Hurley feels it's about time things are finally returning to normalness. {Normalness, here on this "Island"? Could anything be considered normal? Maybe there really is a normalcy to the Island that Hurley knows about? Hmmm?!}
Kate calls out for Sayid.
Hurley-"Uh, crap"
Kate informs Sayid they need his help.

In the pit Sawyer whispers asking Jin in English, "What do you know? What did they do to you? Who the hell are they? Who the hell are they?"
Jin-"Others." {Mentions something in Korean.} Michael asks Jin if he saw Walt.
Sawyer-"The Others? How many? How many?"
Jin communicates in Korean and gestures that he was blindfolded.
Michael translates the gesture, "He was blindfolded."
Sawyer suggests there could be a hundred of the out there, "Push me up."   He's going to try to get them out of there.
They push Sawyer up and he tries to open the stick hatch, but they've got it weighted down with something; it's tied off somewhere. Sawyer wants to be lifted higher.
A knife pokes through the stick hatch and Sawyer falls. The big dude looks down at and throws an unconscious woman in.
Michael-"It's a girl." {She has scratches on her face.}

Locke is setting up the film on the reel to reel projector. Jack wants to know what was going on down here before I showed up.
Locke-"Kate was tied up, Desmond had a gun on me. I think you pretty much caught the gist of it."
Jack whispers,"Desmond."
Locke shares Desmond wants to know a lot about them; how they got there and if they were "sick."
Jack-"You didn't ask anything about him?"
Locke-"He was the one with the gun."
Jack-"You sure seem calm for someone who believes the world's going to end in the next 45 minutes."
Confident Locke feels, "He'll fix it."
Jack-"You understand that what he's saying. It's, it's insane. It's impossible."
Locke-"Why is it insane?"
Jack-"Because the last time I saw a computer that was going to save the world, it didn't look like that." {That is not a general statement, that is specific!}
Locke-"Is the reason you're so upset because he said he recognized you? {Jack doesn't answer.} Because that would be impossible."   {Nothing is impossible.}

They watch the film...John smiles.
The DHARMA Initiative 3 of 6
Swan-DHARMA logo
Orientation Station 3 The Swan.
Marvin-"Welcome, I'm Dr. Marvin Candle, and this is the orientation film for Station 3 of the DHARMA Initiative.   In a moment you'll be given a simple set of instructions for how you and your partner will fulfill the responsibilities associated with the station.   But first, a little history.
The DHARMA Initiative was created in 1970, and it is the brainchild of Gerald and Karen DeGroot, two doctoral candidates at the University of Michigan.   Following in the footsteps of visionaries such as B.F. Skinner {The film glitches/skips/edit} imagined a large scale communal research compound where scientists and free thinkers from around the globe could pursue research in meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism, and Utopian social {Edit} Danish industrialist and munitions magnate Alvar Hanso whose financial backing made their dream of a multi-purpose social science research facility a reality.
You and your partner are currently located in Station 3, or the Swan, and will be for the next 540 days.   Station 3 was originally constructed as a laboratory where scientists could work to understand the unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from this sector of the island.   Not long after the experiments began, however, there was an incident.  And since that time the following protocol has been observed: every 108 minutes the button must be pushed.  From the moment the alarm sounds you will have 4 minutes to enter the code into the microcomputer processor {Edit} induction into the program.   When the alarm sounds, either you or your partner must input the code.   It is highly recommended that you and your partner take alternating shifts. In this manner you will stay as fresh and alert {Edit} utmost importance that when the alarm sounds the code be entered correctly, and in a timely fashion.
Do not attempt to use the computer {Edit} for anything {Edit}. Congratulations. Until your replacements arrive, the future of the project is in your hands.
On behalf of the DeGroots, Alvar Hanso and all of us at the DHARMA Initiative, thank you. Namaste. And good luck."

Locke states, "We're going to need to watch that again." {I love Locke!}

Locke and Helen are at a restaurant. Helen gives John a gift. "It's a present. It's been 6 months, sort of an anniversary, right?"
John didn't get her anything. Helen doesn't mind as her gift only cost a buck. John opens the small box and reveals it's a key to Helen's place.
Helen thought he might be tired of knocking.   John doesn't know what to say.  Helen tells him there's a condition that comes with the key... "When you stay over, you stay over."
She reveals she followed him last night, "To that house that you go to. Is it your father's house?"
John wonders why she would follow him.
Helen-"Well, you sneak off in the middle of the night. I... I just needed to know where you were going? I care about you, John,"
John seems a bit insulted-"Well, yeah, but what I do is my business. It's personal."
Helen-"I wasted 20 years of my life being angry. I told myself I would get over it, but I couldn't do it alone. I needed to find help. You help me John. And I can help you. You just have to promise me that you're not going to go to that place anymore."
John agrees and puts the key in his pocket. They kiss.
{Flash Whoosh}
Locke is re-loading the film in the projector.
Jack-"You're going to watch that again?"
Locke-"Aren't you?"
No, Jack is not.

In the pit Ana Lucia wakes up and appears scared. Concerned Sawyer asks "Sister" if she's alright.
Ana Lucia-"Who are you?"
Michael explains they crashed there; they were on a plane, Sydney to Los Angeles."
Sawyer-"40 of us made it."
Ana Lucia-"Flight 815?"
Sawyer-"You were on it, too?"
Michael-"What? You were in the back? It broke off mid-air. How did you..."
Ana Lucia-"I don't know. I don't know. The plane came apart, and... and somebody's fricking hardside came out of the overhead and knocked me out. I woke up underwater and made my way to the top...swam to shore."
Sawyer asks if she's been out there by herself  the whole time.
Ana Lucia-"Trying to find food... making my way hoping to find somebody. And then, yesterday, they found me."
Michael asks who they are.
Ana Lucia-"You tell me."
Michael inquires if she saw a boy about 10 years old, "They took my son."
Ana introduces herself and says she didn't see him.
Sawyer- "Sawyer. This is Mike. The quiet Korean guy is Jin. We're about to be the best thing that ever happened to you."
Ana Lucia asks, "How's that?"
Sawyer-"Because next time Shaft opens the cage {shows the gun } he's going to get a surprising little howdy doody."

Desmond is working on fixing the computer. Jack asks Desmond if he's in contact with the people that made the film; is he in contact with anyone?
Desmond-"Do you think I'd be here if I was?"
Jack wonders how Desmond "Didn't know about the crash, about us?" {Really! He didn't hear a crash?!}
Focused Desmond-"I push this button every 108 minutes. I don't get out much."
Jack-"So, these replacements?"
Desmond-"Kelvin died waiting for his replacements."
Jack asks if that's so, "Where does his food come from? You really think this is happening?"
Desmond-"Why wouldn't it be?"
Jack-"It says "Quarantine" on the inside of the hatch to keep you down here. To keep you scared. But you know what? We've been up there for over 40 days and no one's gotten sick. You think that this is the only part of it that's true?   Do you ever think that maybe they put you down here to push a button every 100 minutes just to see if you would?  That all of this, the computer, the button...it's just a mind game? An experiment?" {Every 108 minutes Jack, not 100!}
Desmond-"Every single day. And for all our sakes, I hope it's not real.   But the film says this is an electromagnetic station.   And I don't know about you, brother, but every time I walk past that concrete wall out there, my fillings hurt. {Although it sounds like he says his feeling hurt. Plus it's a good thing a dentist landed in a tree on the other side of the island!}
{Timer-49 00} Right. {He flips the switch on the computer, it blows and the power goes out. A generator supplies minimal power} Oh no!"

Locke asks what happened.
Desmond starts to freak out and declares "It's over" and packs food, the serum and pneumatic injector. {The Third Policeman book is shown.}
Locke- "What are you doing? Are you leaving? Desmond? Wait. We can...we can fix the computer. Sayid is coming. He knows..."
Desmond-"Give him my best." {WTF?!}
Jack sees that Desmond leaves the photo of he and Penny behind.
Locke is upset. "Wait, wait, wait! Where are you... You can't leave. Where are you going?" {It's almost like Locke is asking those questions to himself.}
Desmond, bailing out the door with the sticky wheel tells Locke, "As far as I can run, brother." {There's another door beyond that one.}
Jack goes to follow him. Locke asks Jack what should they do.
Jack-"Nothing. We do nothing. It's not real. None of it's real."
Locke-"This isn't... this isn't what was supposed to happen!"
Jack-"What was supposed to happen?"
Locke-"Please, don't leave me here."
Jack-"Bye, John. You're on your own."
Locke-"Jack!"
Jack exits.

Timer-47 00
Locke tries put part of the computer together but knocks over a red toolbox. As he picks up the tools he's getting angry and frustrated, "Why is this happening like this? What do you want? What do you... What am I supposed to do?!"    Locke is near tears.

Helen is sleeping while John lies wide awake staring at the ceiling.
John splashes water on his face and looks at himself and at his kidney scar in the mirror.

John is sitting in his car in front of the gated house drinking coffee.    Another car bumps into the back of his and Helen gets out.   John is stunned.   Fired up Helen grabs Locke's keys out of the ignition and runs over to the gate as panicked John begs her to wait, but Helen throws his keys over the gate anyway.
John-"Why are you doing this?"
Helen-"He's not coming out of this house, John because he doesn't care. I know why you're here, why you keep coming here.   You're scared. You're scared of moving forward...with me, with us. You're going to have to choose. Him or me."
John-"No, no, no, it's not that simple."
Helen feels it is.
John-"I, I, I can't. I can't."
Helen-"Yes, you can."
Angry John feels, "No, I can't! I don't know how."       He gets teary.
Helen-"Because you don't know what's going to happen. None of us do. That's why it's called a leap of faith, John. You don't have to be alone."
She holds out her hand and John takes it.
{Flash Whoosh}

Alone Locke is crying. Kate comes in calling out for Jack.
She enters the computer room and just by saying John's name he snaps out of it.
Hurley and Sayid are with Kate. Hurley seems amazed by the room.
Sayid-"What is this place?"
Kate asks where Jack is.
Locke-"Jack's gone. {to Sayid} I need your help."
Timer shows 24 00.
{23 minutes lapsed.}
Kate is in the corridor looking around. She asks Sayid what it looks like.
Sayid-"It's a breaker box. There has to be one. Follow the conduit lines."
Hurley-"Cool, okay, great. What's a conduit line?"
Kate points out tubes and tells him to follow those.
Hurley finds the pantry. "Whoa!"
Kate-"Did you find it?"
Hurley-"Uh, uh, depends on what you mean by it?" {Kate already found that!}

In the pit Sawyer tells Ana Lucia,"Alright, here's what we're going to do.  Jin plays dead, you call for help."
Ana Lucia-"Sick prisoner, are you serious?"
He wonders if she has a better idea.  She just wants to know where he got the gun and how'd he get it on the plane. Sawyer shares there was a federal marshal on the plane.
Sawyer-"Yeah, I'm lucky. Mike, let's get this thing going..."
Sawyer didn't use the gun while they were being grabbed because he was too busy getting hit in the face with a club. He wonders why "Cupcake" is so interested.  Michael immediately changes the subject, "C'mon, let's just...we gotta.."
Ana Lucia grabs the gun and elbows Sawyer in the face.
Ana Lucia yells,"Back up! Back up. Coming out. Coming out!"
The big dude lifts the stick hatch, lowers a rope and pulls Ana Lucia up. He asks what happened and who they are. He ties down the hatch made of sticks.

Desmond trips and falls down a hill as he runs through the jungle. Jack appears and pulls his gun on Desmond, "Stop."
Desmond thinks Jack stopped him for the code. Jack doesn't know what Desmond is referring to.
{Are we sure Jack wasn't a policeman or a soldier in a previous incarnation of his life? The dude always has a gun! lol!}
Desmond-"Listen carefully. If by some miracle you manage to get the computer working again you've got to enter the code: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, hit execute. Again- 4, 8, 15..."
Jack just tells him to shut up. "Nothing is going to happen. Some man takes you down there, shows you a movie, and you push a button on, on faith alone? Nothing is going to happen!"
Desmond-"In about 15 minutes you're either going to be very right, or very wrong, brother. You want to shoot me? Shoot me. but I'm not hanging around..."
Jack-"Why are you running?! You don't even know what you're running from!"
Desmond-"I remember you...running...I know you. I met you... Los Angeles. I was training, yeah? You twisted your ankle..."
Jack-"Stop."
Desmond-"You're a doctor, right? There was this girl...you were worried...you said, you said you failed her. That was you."
Jack feels that doesn't matter.
Desmond wonders if the girl is okay; what happened to her? How can Jack say it doesn't matter?
Jack blurts out, "I married her!"   He cries.
Desmond-"Right, and you're... you're not married to her anymore, then?"
He picks up his pack and tells Jack, "See you in another life, yeah?"

The timer- 5:00
Locke asks Sayid if he can fix it.
Sayid-"This man, whoever he was, replaced the motherboard. The power transformer is blown."
Locke-"Don't you need to know why?"
Sayid-"All I need to know is that the timer is counting down to something. And that this computer needs to be repaired. I'm sure you'll tell me why once I've done so."

Kate finds the breaker, flips the switch and the lights turn on.
The alarm sounds and the timer passes 4 minutes and starts its beeping sequence.
Hurley seems concerned, "Oh, what's that?"
Locke is panicked, wanting Sayid to work faster, "You have to..."
Sayid-"I know what I have to do.   Reconnected the processor.   Replaced the transformer."    He turns it on and Kate wonders what happens now.
Locke-"There was a code. He made me enter it."
Concerned Hurley asks, "What code?"
Sayid-"Do you remember what it is?"
Locke-"4, 8..."
Hurley's getting worked up, "Wait a minute..."
Locke-"15, 16..."
Hurley-"Dude, I'm serious, stop."
Locke-"Hugo, this is not the time or the place."
Hurley-" Yeah, well, I think it is."
Locke-"23..."
Hurley-"What is this thing? You don't even know what it does. We need..."
Locke-"32..."
Hurley-"You know what? Forget it, go ahead, do your thing."
Jack appears, "It's not 32. It's 42. He just told me, Desmond. The last numbers 42."
Locke-"You're sure."
Jack-"Yeah, I'm sure."
Locke enters 42, and is about to press execute but suggests Jack do it, "You have to do it."
Jack-" You do it yourself, John."
Locke-"No, you saw the film, Jack. This is a...This is a two person job, at least."
{This has been a 2 person operation, Kelvin dies. Does Desmond take on this task completely by himself? He did it as a 1 man operation.}
Sayid-"This argument is irrelevant."
Jack doesn't want Sayid to interject.
Adamant Jack insists, "No. It's not real. Look, you want to push the button, you do it yourself."
Locke-"If it's not real, then what are you doing here, Jack? Why did you come back? Why do you find it so hard to believe?"
Jack-"Why do you find it so easy?!"
Locke-"It's never been easy!"
The timer shows 1 04. A 'warning' type alarm sounds.
Kate-"Maybe you should just do it."
Jack-"No. It's a button."
Locke-"I can't do this alone, Jack. I don't want to. It's a leap of faith, Jack."
Timer 00 27.
Jack goes to the computer and pushes the button with 1 second to spare.
The timer resets to 108 00.
Locke sits down at the computer, "I'll take the first shift."
Jack exits.
The timer counts down.
Orientation is a great episode!  A very interesting episode.
Faith vs. free will.   Desmond continued to push the button believing he's saving the world. Jack still needs fact/proof of what is to be before he acts upon this button thingy. As humans, how do we choose between making a decision based on facts/proof or faith?   If a person only believes in one or the other, is every single decision made in life based solely on those factors?
Even though this episode shows us that pushing the button could be important... is it real?
Let's look beyond something here, let's take the "button pushing" out of the equation for a moment. The dialogue that is coming out of Jack's mouth could be the truth.   Are the things they are experiencing real or really happening?   Are they part of a psychology, human behavior study, an experiment, a project, an adventure/journey...a game? I think YES!!

Things to Note...Questions to ask...
Real. Not Real.
This is the third time we’ve seen the scene with Locke, Desmond, Jack and Kate inside the hatch.
Replacements.
Marvin Candle gives a brief history of the D.I.. Why would he need to do that? Wouldn't the men in that station already be privy to the "background"?
Marvin "Candle" =Light.
Timer. Time out. Reset.
Micro computer processor. Motherboard. Power transformer. Tools. Button. Stick. Shift. Execute. Code. Program.
Words. Written. Script.
Projector. Film. Stereo. Speakers.
Operation. Partner. Team. Worth. Fail.
Jack asks Des “What’s going to happen?”   And in Adrift Locke asks Des, “What’s going to happen?”
What is with Desmond and the electronics?  And why doesn't he give Sayid a chance to fix the computer before declaring "it's over" and running off?
Desmond leaves the photo of him and Penny behind!
The computer needs to be fixed.
I feel like Desmond is rambling about a story or retelling a story.
Does Desmond get back in his boat at this point?  Did he run for days then get in his boat? We know he sails around for 2 weeks- That would mean the Lostie's would only have had access to the Swan for about 2 weeks.
Faith. Fact
Head. Crazy. Insane.
Feelings. Hurt. Alone. Fear. Scared. Anger. Frustration. Failure. Uncertainty.
Kate finds the pantry then Hurley enters the pantry.
Hurley is not a fan of the hatch and computer, I wonder why.
We get lots of info from the film even though it is edited. Obviously someone doesn't want people to know ALL the information.
How many lives can these people have?
Jack is the first man in the room to push the EXECUTE button.
Please watch the Orientation film again. Listen to it, but look at what is being shown to us. Plus, do you see Michael anywhere in there?  I'm not saying that it is for sure (yeah), but if you look in two scenes you can see a man with a very large afro, who looks like- in profile- like Michael. The camera is very careful to show us 'just enough' of this person, but not enough to be positive. Maybe it's a look alike/replica. If it is Michael, that would support my thoughts of him being "connected" to the "Island".

Vocabulary and Research...
♦  Code- In communications a code is a rule for converting a piece of information (for example, a letter, word, phrase or gesture) into another form or representation (one sign into another sign), not necessarily of the same type. In communications and information processing, encoding is the process by which information from a source is converted into symbols to be communicated.
- Code (cryptography) device for hiding the meaning of a message.
- Code (computer programming) or machine code, any sequence of statements and/or declarations written in some human-readable computer programming language.
- Coding theory, branch of mathematics and computer science dealing with data transmission.
-Decoding is the reverse process, converting these code symbols back into information understandable by a receiver.
-CODE- Computationally Oriented Display Environment.
♦  Cheat Code-Creates an advantage beyond normal game play, usually to make the game easier. Cheats include advantages such as invulnerability ("God mode") or an infinite amount of some resource such as ammunition. Cheats may also create unusual or interesting effects which do not necessarily make the game easier to play, such as making enemies tougher, or giving characters (including enemies) different appearances, such as large heads. Cheats often take the form of "secrets" placed by game developers, usually to reward dedicated players. Cheats may be activated from within the game itself (a cheat code implemented by the original game developers); or created by third-party software (a game trainer) or hardware.

The etymology of the word is derived from electro, because it is related to electrical activity, cardio, Greek for heart, and graph, a Greek root meaning "to write".   The electrical waves can be measured at electrodes placed at specific points on the skin.

Since the previous episode I've wondered if all roads lead to Desmond or the Swan.
Jack and Locke watch the orientation film as an introduction to the Swan, but it's really their orientation to the "Island".
Jack and John sit together to watch the film...I sometimes feel like we're seeing two halves of the same person.   And sometimes I feel like the other Lostie's are aspects of  Jack, John and/or each other.  Weird, I know.

We witness the Islanders pursue goals within the "Island" setting.  What if all this, this journey, is more of a live action role playing game, integrating the use of computers and projectors in some way?

Feeling pain, whether it is deep emotional pain, mental, spiritual, or even physical, these are the demons John, Jack and the gang are fighting.    Their hearts are heavy indeed, but one of the goals seems to be to learn how to get over past issues and move forward.

But on to the matter at hand...here is their orientation into this part of their journey.

Live Together, Die Alone. Part 2.

Let's talk about LOST!  Live Together, Die Alone. Part 2

Inside the computer room:
Desmond with his ear to the door tells Locke, "I think your friends just blew themselves up brother."
He suggests they open the door.
Locke- "It's a trick!"
Desmond feels Locke they could be hurt; asks “Is your doctor is around?
Locke doesn't know where he is.
The clock shows 33 00 and the computers are still working.
Desmond asks Locke if the reason he's letting the clock run all the way down to the very last tick, "Is it because you need to look down the barrel of a gun and find out what you really believe, John."
Locke tells him he did look down the barrel of a gun, and he believed, "I thought, was my destiny to get into this place. And somebody died, a kid. Because he was stupid enough to believe that I knew what I was talking about. And on the night that he died, for nothing, I was sitting right up there, all alone beating my hand bloody against...that stupid door, screaming to the heavens what I should do. Then a light went on. I thought it was a sign. But it wasn't a sign. Probably just you going to the bathroom.

Sayid on shore discovers the others "Fake abandoned camp".
There’s a Dharma symbol on the double doors.

 Sayid opens a Dharma door that is built into the rock, only to reveal actual rock behind the door and not an open entrance to anywhere.

Kate brings Jack’s attention to a huge mound of pneumatic tubes filed with notebooks; journal entries filled with handwritten notes.

Kate reads a few entries. “0400 S R moves Ping Pong table again, 0415 takes a shower.” {Who/what is SR?}
Sawyer finds Locke’s blast door map and hands it to Jack.
Sawyer gives Jack the heads up to seeing Sayid’s black smoke signal to hit that beach party.

Jack figures the signal smoke is miles from here. It isn't coming from the area they assumed it should be coming from. Jack asks Michael where he's taking them.
Michael says they are headed to the beach.
Angry Jack knows they are nowhere near the beach.
Michael yells back that he had to.
They all hear whispers/Elizabeth. The group is ambushed; they’re shot at with darts. Sawyer is hit; he convulses. They try to run away.
Michael yells "Wait!” in an effort to stop the craziness.
Kate is shot with a dart. Jack tries to carry Kate to safety.
Hurley is traumatized by all this commotion, he tries to block them out! The darts take them down and puts them to sleep. The Others bag them.

The clock in the computer room is at 21 00.
Locke shares more about the Pearl Hatch/station with Desmond.

"The Pearl is a psychological station full of TV monitors. And two men sat in viewing chairs and filled notebooks with observations on what happens in here.    And they put the notebooks in pneumatic tubes that send them back to their headquarters so they could evaluate us, as an experiment." {Note Locke says "US" not the study subjects or any reference to anyone other than them!}
Desmond asks him what if he's got it backwards {Backwards!} "What if the experiment wasn't on the two men in here, but the two men in there?"
Desmond wants to see the tape.
John tells him there's no way to see it down here.   Desmond wonders what the computer in the Pearl was for.  Locke mentions it printed out numbers “Lots and lots of numbers.”
Locke gives Desmond the Log, "Reading material for the next 19 minutes. Knock yourself out.” {Yes! Knock yourself out!!! Literally!}
Desmond looks through the log. Lots of numbers, followed by the word accepted.
{Flash}
Desmond looks at himself in the mirror in the bathroom {A Mirror with the picture of him and Pen in the bottom left corner. Yeah Penny/Widmore and a mirror.}

Kelvin notes that Desmond has been shaving everyday for last three years, “You need to live a little. Let go.”
{Kelvin is suiting up and reinforcing his suit with tape.}
Desmond- “I’m never gonna let go, brotha.”
Kelvin says that’s the spirit, “Goodbye, Des.”
Desmond seems concerned by this ‘goodbye’.
Kelvin says he'll see him in a couple of hours. Desmond notices a large rip in the right leg of Kelvin’s yellow suit. He now realizes Kelvin hasn't been completely honest about things. Kelvin isn't sick/infected.

Desmond quietly follows Kelvin outside and watches Kelvin remove his mask; so Des removes his. Everything is fine.
Kelvin leads Desmond to the discovery of his boat; the Elizabeth.
Kelvin armed with a gun, appears behind Des and says, "I didn't think you'd have the stones to come after me. I was a spook for 10 years, Des. I know when I'm being followed." {He intentionally led Des to the boat.}
Kelvin says he's fixing Desmond’s boat; he was about a week away from leaving. He also mentions Desmond wrecked it pretty good.
Kelvin lowers his rifle and asks Des, “So what do you think? You wanna come with me?
Desmond is getting upset, "Come where?! What about the button?"
Kelvin- "Screw the button, man. Who knows if it's even real?"
He claims his rambling about dams; electromagnets and fail safes were due to his being drunk. Kelvin reveals to Desmond  he lied because he needed a sucker to save the world after he left.
Desmond is pissed, "You crazy ol bastard! You stole my life! What else did you lie to me about? Tell me!"
Desmond grabs and is pushing Kelvin in anger. They fight and Desmond bangs Kelvin’s head against the rock; Kelvin's bleeding. Desmond freaks out.
He takes the key and gun from Kelvin and runs back to the Swan. {It's a good thing he knows his way back. He's never been outside!}
Desmond runs into the hatch. The alarm is beeping, the station is shaking. The has begun, "countdown System Failure."     The timer shows hieroglyphs in red/black. He tries to enter the numbers. Stuff is flying all over the hatch!  Through the chaos he manages to reset the computer.

Back in the hatch with Locke, Desmond looks over the log. He sees a date in the log 922044:16System Failure.
Desmond  asks Locke, "When did you come here? The island. How long ago?"
Locke-"60-65 days ago. Sept. 22."
Desmond-"I think I crashed your plane."

On a long dock, the Others {No shoes} lead the hooded Lostie's, who are made to kneel near the end of the dock.
Michael of course is not one of the hooded.
Their hoods are removed but they are gagged. The Others are armed.
Kate tells Mr. Friendly through her gag that she knows his beard is fake.   He doesn't understand what she's said so Miss Klugh translates, “She said she knows your beards fake, Tom."
Tom thanks Kate for pointing that out and removes the fake beard; apparently it itches. He also thanks B/Bea for telling her his name.
A piece of shit boat pulls up to the dock. Henry steps off; no shoes. {Check out how he looks at Michael.}
Henry says "Hello again" to Jack first. He turns to Tom asks him where his beard is.
Tom- "I think they know."
Henry's not very pleased. He addresses Michael, "Let's take care of business, shall we?"

Back in the blown up part of the hatch, Charlie is waking up. The sound is VERY muffled and there is a high pitch ring. {He’s has blood on him and his right ear hurts.}
He calls out for Eko. There literally is a bit of an echo. Charlie is trying to wake up Eko.

The computer beeping can be heard.
The clock shows 3 55.
Desmond tells Locke they need to push the button.
Locke says NO.
Desmond-“Did you not hear me, brotha? I crashed your bloody plane...On that day those numbers turn to hieroglyphics.   And when the last one came down this whole place started to shake and that screen, that screen filled up with System Failure. System Failure! And that number there 9 22 04, September the 22nd 2004 …..The day your plane crashed. It's real. It's all bloody real. Now push the damn button!"
Locke insists, "I know what I saw! It's a lie! It's NOT real! None of it is real!"
If Locke won't push the button then Desmond will.
Locke grabs the computer monitor and throws it to the ground.
Desmond is stunned, "You've killed us. You've killed us all."
Locke-"No, I just saved us all."
Desmond uses the exposed wires to force the blast doors to go up and he runs out. He  moves the Ping Pong table away from the book shelves.
Charlie asks for help with Eko.
Desmond says he's trying to help, as he pulls books off the shelves. He finds the copy of 'Our Mutual Friend'.
{Flash}

Desmond is in the hatch with a gun and the key; he is drinking. {Alcohol is not a Dharma issued bottle.}
He opens the book a letter falls out.  He reads this letter written by Pen as Desmond leaves for prison.   She had it hidden in the one place he'd turn to in a moment of great desperation.

Pen wrote- "I know you go away with weight of what happened on your shoulders and I know the only person who can take it off is you…Please don't give up. {What Happened? When?} All we need to survive is one person who truly loves us, and you have her. She will wait for him always. She signs the letter, 'Pen"

{Note that part of the letter is not narrated by Penny, plus we see 2 versions.}

Desmond has a temper tantrum, crying, "It's all gone."
Des runs over to the bookshelf moves the Ping Pong table and starts pulling books and records off the shelf. {Locke is pounding on the hatch from the outside/above having his sown fit.}
{It's important to note that Desmond and Locke both felt “desperation” and “hope” at the same time! Des heard the banging, and Locke sees the light.}
Des takes the key out of the book and kisses the key.

In the computer room John watches the timer click down.
Frantic Desmond tells Locke, "Three days before you came down here, before we met… I heard a banging on the hatch door, shouting…But it was you John, wasn’t it?  You say there isn’t any purpose, no such thing as fate.  But you saved my life, brother, so that I can save yours."
Locke still insists none of this is real, nothing is gonna happen, we're gonna be okay."
Desmond is gonna blow the dam.
Desmond- "I’ve gotta go and you’ve got to get as far away from here as possibleI'm sorry for what ever happened that made you stop believing. But it's all real. Now I've got to go and make it all go away...I'll see you in another life brother."
"SYSTEM FAILURE."
Stuff starts flying around the hatch.
Charlie is still trying to get Eko to wake up. Finally he wakes up. They struggle to make their way out.
Silverware, darts, washer, dryer, pots and pans are flying at the guys.
Charlie says to Eko, "Come with me. I know…" {Know what?! Know WHAT?} The hatch is FREAKING OUT! {Interesting sound it’s making. Listen to it.}
Stuff flying everywhere, shaking, etc...
Desmond heads below.

Eko sees Locke in the computer room. The two men look at each other.
Locke admits, "I was wrong."

Desmond at the failsafe crosses himself, as he’s recalling the words of her letter he says, "I love you Penny", and he turns the key. {Or the screw…}
There is a bright light and a Hum that causes everyone to cover their ears. Everyone is looking up. {Listen to the sound again.}

On the dock: Henry LOOKS pissed at this event!!

Bernard saves Claire and the baby from the flying 'quarantine' hatch door. {Although is just looks as if it’s falling from the sky. Lol}
The event only lasts a few seconds.
Later at the beach camp they clean up the mess from this 'incident'.
Charlie wanders out of the jungle. Bernard asks him if he's okay

Charlie shows/tells him his "ears", implying an issue with his ears/hearing.  Bernie also asks about Locke and Eko, {No one asks about Desmond}
Charlie's response is, "They're not back yet?" {How much time could have passed here?}

At the Pala Ferry dock Henry says to Michael he's “not happy about the arrangement that was made with you but, we got more than we bargained for when Walt joined us, so...I supposed this is what’s best."
Henry acknowledges that Michael let him go, set him free. Michael lived up to his word.
Henry-“And we live up to our word too. Do you know how to drive a boat?"  {Not sail a boat.}
He gives him the shitty boat. {The boat that's not meant for OPEN WATER TRAVEL!}
Henry tells Michael to follow compass baring 3 2 5, "If you do that exactly, you and your son will find rescue."
{Rescue! He doesn't say anything about the outside world or home, etc.}
Michael- "How do you know I won't tell people about where I was?"
{Where are you Michael?! Do you know?!}
Henry- "Maybe you will. Maybe you won't. But it won’t matter, once you leave you'll never be able to get back here. And my hunch is you won’t say a word to anybody.  Because if you do. People will find out what you did to get your son back."
Michael asks about his friends, "I was promised you wouldn't hurt them."
Henry-"Deal’s a deal."
Michael- "Who are you people?"
Henry smiles, “We're the good guys, Michael."
He gives Michael the boat. Walt is inside. {What did Michael really do? Hmmm}
Henry-"Bon Voyage, Michael” {French.} Michael reunites with Walt, he tells him it's okay now and they’re going home.
Miss Klugh releases Hugo {Watch Hurley's expression!} She tells him to "Go back to your camp. Your job is to tell the rest of your people they can never come here."
Hugo- "What about my friends?"
Henry tells him that his friends are "coming home with us."
Hurley appears very confused. Jack gives his the “nod” for it's okay.
We see Michael leaving on the boat; he seems to make eye contact with Jack. Jack nods at Kate,  Kate blinks; a sign of some sort of 'plan' or something?  Their heads are covered/bagged again.

Night on the beach:
Claire asks Charlie what happened out there.
Charlie {still bothered by his ear} replies, “You wanna hear the part about me nearly being killed by the flaming fire ball or the flying fork?”
Claire wants him to be serious.
He carefree says "Nothing happened."
Claire-“Well something happened. I mean that noise and the sky turned that weird violet color.”
Charlie laughs, “Really?!” {Why would he say nothing happened? That makes NO sense}
Claire kisses him.

Two Portuguese men in a listening station somewhere very snowy. {Yeah! Snow globe. lol} They are drinking coffee and playing chess.

{The little window looks similar to a small airplane or portal window or even TV screen.}

We hear them say things like, “I crush your defense... It's all part of the plan... Then it must be your plan to lose."
Then we see a computer screen; a red light blinks. The screen shows Electromagnetic Anomaly DETECTED. 7418880. They’re just noticing it now. "That's it, isn't it?...We missed it again" {Again!!} "Did we miss it?"

There's beeping. One of the men unlocks a binder/log book with emergency numbers, finds a phone number to call.
The chess game gets knocked over!
"It's not a false alarm this time {this time.} The Jack look-a-like uses a yellow phone; a call is made to Penny. She gets awakened by the phone call.
On her night stand we see a picture of her and Desmond, lots of makeup items including lipstick number 20 and a clock.
"Miss Widmore, it’s us. I think we found it", says the Jack look-a-like.

Live Together, Die Alone. GREAT, GREAT EPISODE!!! There was so much to note with this one. Let’s point out some things. Keep in mind that Desmond left the Swan Hatch when the Castaways first entered it. {Replacements}

Things to note...Questions to ask...
♟ Military. Military Jail. Bomb.
♟ Confinement. Prison. Snow Globe.
♟ "There is no outside world, there's no escape."
♟ Sleep. Wake Up. Knocked out.
♟ Crazy. Injections. Alcohol/Drunk. Darts
Psychological experiment
♟ Wire. Wired. Wires.Computer. Screen. Log. Stick. Net.
♟ Microcomputer processor. Escape. System Termination. System Failure. Key.

♟ Listen-Hearing-Can't hear.
♟ Joke. Fake beards. Costumes. Make up. Decoy village. Sets. Proof of things being staged and fake. The pneumatic tubes/note books to nowhere. All for show and illusion.  Things aren't real
Desmond sailed around for 2 1/2 weeks. So the Castaways only had access to the hatch and the button for 2 1/2 Weeks.
♟ Is Desmond on Team B or Team A on the island?  2 teams/sides- 'A' and 'B'. Make sense? But who is on which side?
Who is S.R.?  Being watched/observed/viewed.  Binoculars can be considered 'looking glass' of sorts.
♟ Coincidence Libby gives Desmond a boat? Come on! NO it is NOT!
♟ Does Desmond know who the Hostiles are? Could Widmore be a Hostile?
♟ Are any of them tied to the Black Rock, a slave ship? A ship?
♟ Who is Libby's hubby David?
♟ Why do we hear the name Elizabeth in the whispers?  Libby is short for Elizabeth.
♟ "Smells like carrots"...A food for rabbits.
♟ The 4 toed statue: A real statue? Part of an old culture of the island or somewhere else? Was it built there? Was it dropped there? Is it just a prop?
♟ Does anyone we know on the "Island" have 4 toes?
♟ Jack says Live Together, Die Alone in this episode only to Michael.  We know he's only said it once in front of all the Castaways in season 1.  Remember that for another time!
♟ Desmond knows how to make the blast doors go down/up. Who made the blast doors go down in the episode LOCKDOWN?
♟ Where does Kelvin go every time he leaves Desmond in the hatch? Hmmm? Was it really to fix Desmond's boat?
♟ MORE LIES. Kelvin lies to Desmond about why he wears the suit.
Where did Kelvin's body go after Desmond cracked his head open?
♟ How long is Desmond on the "Island"? Is it really for three years?
Missing parts. Film Edits. Missing parts of a statue. Missing Film pieces.
♟ The Alien reference. Hostiles.
♟ Eko was wrong about everyone dying in 90 minutes if the button didn't get pushed. There was an event, but nobody died.
♟ Locke was wrong about not pushing the button.
♟ Is Michael part of something that ended up being much bigger/different than he 'signed' up for? Could Michael have been involved with 'people' of the "Island", but Henry and his people are not from the same group of said people?
♟ How many times has the 'experiment' been done?  How many times have things been done over?
♟ I know Desmond's accent is of a real dialect. But when he uses the word Aye, he sounds like a pirate! LOL!
♟ If there really is no quarantine…Maybe there aren't any hostiles or any sickness.
♟ Where are the whispers coming from, REALLY?
♟ The Others camp: Why a fake camp? Who are they trying to fool?
♟ Black- White
♟ Stick-Stuck.
♟ Drunk. Liquor = Desmond-Christian-Jack.
♟ "No Escape".   Obvious EXIT sign in orientation film.
Michael can't be traveling very far. The boat isn't meant for the open water.
♟ Jumping ahead (Naomi speaks Portuguese).
♟ The EMA DETECTED: How many times? They reference it's happened before, but missed it!
♟What is the sky turning bright/violet about, really? What happened? What did it do?

I know I ask many questions at the end of the episode notes . Although I write things in question form some of them are answers...in disguise.

Live together, Die alone... I guess all the residents of the island are having a hard time living together. You know what that means.

Live Together, Die Alone. Part 1

Let's talk about LOST! Live Together, Die Alone. PART 1.

"Are we rescued/saved?" asks Charlie as they all see the boat out in the water. The survivors all wave their hands in hopes of getting the attention of someone on the boat.
Sayid-"Perhaps it's them." {Whom?}

Sayid, Sawyer and Jack dive in and swim out to the boat.
Kate looks through binoculars. {They're at a funeral and Kate happens to have binoculars.}
Charlie- "Maybe it's a trap?"
Hurley-"What do you mean a trap?"

Jack, Sawyer and Sayid climb on board and cock their soaking wet guns. The 3 amigos hear Opera music coming from below.

Shots are fired upward from below.
They hear the gun run out of bullets and a voice say, “Damn it.”
Jack kicks in the boat’s hatch.
Drunk Desmond looks up, "You."
He laughs in amusement.{We get a glimpse of Sawyer's healed gunshot wound on his left shoulder}

Nigh on the beach:
Jack brings over food and talks to a still drinking/drunk Desmond.
Jack chats with Des about him running off and that he forgot to mention that he still had a sailboat.
Jack- “Why’d you come back?
The drunk replies, "Do you think I did it on purpose?”
Desmond tells his tale of sailing out there for 2 ½ weeks, bearing due west, making 9 knots, he should've been in Fiji in less than a week. The first piece of land he saw wasn't Fiji; it was here, this island. He continues, "Because this is it. This is all there is left. This Ocean and this place here. We're stuck in a bloody snow globe. There's no outside world, there’s no escape."
Desmond wants Jack to go away and let him drink.
Sayid gets Jack’s attention.
Desmond asks Jack, "You still pushing it?
Jack smiles, "Yeah, we're still pushing it."
Desmond shakes his head as if to imply they’re idiots.
{FLASH}
BUZZZZ!!!
Desmond stands at the counter in a military prison.
The soldier/guard is returning Desmond’s personal property to put in a brown paper bag. {A set of keys, pocket watch-gold plated, 1 photograph w/Penny, one book 'Our Mutual Friend' by Charles Dickens. {Hardcover}
{Over the speaker you can hear, Corporal Priestly 9 1….}
The Guard asks him why he didn't bring the book inside.
Desmond-"To avoid temptation, brother.”   He's read everything Mr. Charles Dickens has ever written, every wonderful word, every book, except this one. He's saving it. It will be the last thing he reads before he dies.
The Guard
- "That it's a nice idea, as long as you know when you're gonna die." {Does he know when he's going to die? Nobody knows that! How would he know when to start reading it?}
The guard proclaims, "Lance Corporal Desmond David Hume, your sentence is hereby complete. You are now and forever Dishonorable Discharged from the Royal Scots Regiment of her majesties armed forces. Long live the queen."
A date on discharge paper April 4, 1999. The guard tells Desmond to "Enjoy your sodding book!" {Does he know Desmond is going to die? LOL!}

Desmond leaves the building with his paper bag.
Thunder rolls and it’s pouring rain.
Building 5B and sign that says Southway Garrison. B Company.
Desmond is offered a ride by a man in a fancy car {Mr. Widmore}. Desmond initially refuses the ride from him. Widmore tells Desmond to “Get in the car!”
Sitting in the back seat Desmond notices Widmore has a black box and a white box, “Did you bring me a present?”
Actually Widmore brought Desmond two presents. “One of these boxes contains your past, Hume, the other, your future.”
Desmond opens the black box containing all the undelivered letters he wrote to Penny (who he calls Pen).
Desmond is upset, “You’re a bastard. You know that.”
Widmore feels that it’s good for Penny to have not received his sentiments. Now Penny believes Desmond has forsaken her and that’s the way it’s going to stay. Widmore shares Penelope has moved on with her life and will marry. Widmore opens the white box, "This is for your new life, away from my daughter. The conditions are simple. No contact, No calls, No post. You just run away."
Widmore feels Desmond would 'just' run away because he's a coward. {Coward from what?}

Back on the beach Desmond continues to imbibe.
Sayid talks to Jack about taking advantage of Michael being compromised by the Others, "I believe fate has given us our answer. The boat."
Sayid explains to Jack the camp Michael is leading them to is where the Others will set their trap. Michael will lead them by land, Sayid will approach by sea; he can go ashore undetected and scout for them. Their numbers and positions, their weapons. Then he will go to the nearest beach and start a signal fire with these leaves that burn a dark black smoke. {Oh really? Hmmm?} "You and your team will meet me at the signal and will go in together."
Sayid feels sure Michael has been turned and doesn't want the other three to know the plan. Sayid doesn't want Michael to sense they know he is lying, "All we have is the element of surprise, Jack."
Jack’s only responsibility is to keep it secret.
Jack-"Black Smoke, huh?"
Sayid nods, "This time they will know that we are coming." {This time!}

Locke limps into the computer room of the hatch. We hear the big magnet sound, computers running and clicking.
Eko, who is happy to see John, is looking over the log printouts from the Pearl Station.
The timer shows 5 minutes.
Eko asks John where he’s been.
John’s been thinking… in a minute that computer’s gonna start beeping and he wants Eko to "let the computer run down to zero, past zero. And you're not gonna push the button."
Eko smiles, “But I am going to push the button. Why wouldn’t I?”
Locke- "But you don't want to be a slave."
Eko-"I am a slave to nothing"
Locke
-"You're a slave to that. {points to the time/timer}Just like I was. So I'm going to tell you again…don't push it."
Eko- "Do not tell me what I can do."
As Eko is entering the numbers Locke attempts to smash the computer with Eko’s stick.
Eko grabs the stick before he can hit the computer with it he punches John in the face.
Eko enters the code.
Eko literally tosses Locke out of the hatch as Locke's yelling "No, it's not real! We're only puppets! Puppets on strings! As long as we push it we'll never be free".
Eko
-"Well you're free now, John. Do not come back."
Eko closes the door on Locke.

Daylight at the beach:
The boat is pretty far off shore.
Jack gives one armed Michael a gun. Jack tries to give Hurley a gun, but Hurley says, "No way. If I take that, I'm gonna kill someone."
The point of this excursion is to get Walt back.
Jack gives Kate a gun and she looks at it weird. She talks to Jack again about the stuff they found in the medical station, "Costume, makeup, fake beards. What if these people just want us to think they're hillbillies?"
Michael gets uppity, “Listen. Listen, I was there. I saw them, they are hillbillies! They live in huts, they eat fish. They’re probably more scared than we are and they have no idea we're on our way!"
Sawyer interjects, “Alright. Enough jibber jabber. Let’s Roll."
And they all roll.

ELIZABETH Newport Beach is the name and port city on the boat.
Desmond is rowing to shore.
Desmond and his bottle arrive at the beach. Sayid tells him he needs his boat. Sayid informs Des he's not going "out there"; he needs to get to the north shore quickly.

Desmond asks if he's off to see the Hostiles.
Sayid- "The what?"
Desmond-“You know what? Ignorance is bliss. The boat’s all yours, brotha." {WTF? So don't tell him any info that he may need to save his life or protect anyone? WHY? Maybe he's only worried about himself} Sayid admits he doesn’t know how to sail. Desmond suggests he find someone that does.
{Flash}
Desmond is at the counter buying a cup of coffee. {The color Yellow is obvious here.} He orders the one with the most caffeine in it {stimulant} He's just arrived and doesn't have any more American money; spent it all on a taxi.
Libby, who is behind him in line, pays for it. $4.00. Desmond jokingly asks her if she has 42,000 more of those.
Libby replies seriously, “Depends on what it’s for.” {Really!?} She feels he wasn’t joking about asking for money.
Des tells her about the Solo Sailing Race Around the World. The brochure cover shows us: International Open Ocean Racing Association. Notice of Race.
Desmond’s got 8 months to get in the best shape of his life.
Desmond adamantly tells her, "I'm going to win."
Libby wants to know what he gets if he wins. To Desmond, what matters is who he wins it from. He shows her the back of the brochure; a picture of Charles Widmore. Industrialist, Philanthropist. Sailing Competition.
He openly shares with this "stranger" the fact Widmore tried to buy him off, and when Des didn’t take his money Widmore took away the only thing in the world he ever truly cared about.
Libby- “Who is she?”
Desmond-“His daughter. I was unsuitable on several levels.”
Libby asks what the 42 grand is for. Desmond reveals he still needs a boat.
Libby looks stunned as she has a boat. It belonged to her husband. He wanted to sail to the Mediterranean but he got sick and passed away a month ago. She wants Desmond to have his boat. Desmond says he can't take it.
Libby- "You have to. He'd want you to have it." {WTF? Why would he want HIM to have it?}
Desmond asks what his name was. “David named the boat after her. {Elizabeth}
Desmond accepts the generous gift and says "I thank you, Elizabeth. And I shall win this race for love." {David -Desmond’s middle name and the formal of Dave. Elizabeth-Libby-Ellie.}

Back at the beach, Sun and Sayid talking. Jin comes over to have a private chat with Sun; Sayid will be at the shore. Sun tells Jin, Sayid wants him to sail the boat to the other side of the island to help Michael. Jin smiles but says no; he won’t leave her now. But he wouldn’t be leaving her because Sun’s going with them.

Michael leads the group through the jungle.
Sawyer sees a doll on the ground and almost falls into the ol dolly trap. Kate shares it’s one of the many traps Rousseau has throughout the island. Sawyer asks her how she knows that.
Kate shares the bit about her and Jack getting caught in a net. They hear what sounds like wings flutter/fly by them. A Big {Prehistoric size, camouflage bird} flies over them. Then sound/"HURLEY" coming from the bird.
Hurley-"Did that bird just say my name?"
Sawyer says yeah it did, and then sarcastically, "Right before it crapped gold." {That's interesting, only Hurley heard anything. Also note that the bird and Hurley blend in with the jungle.}

Michael is the only one pulling the trigger at the “bird”, except he realizes his gun has no bullets. Jack gives him a new mag and apologizes for forgetting to load his. Michael realizes that they may be onto him.

Charlie comes upon Locke crying in the jungle. Locke pulls himself together.
Charlie asks Locke what happened to his face. Nothing; Locke says he’s fine.
Charlie- “Hey ahh, you’re feeling sorry for yourself, you may wanna have a drink with your mate from the hatch. I hear he’s a little despondent as well.”
Locke- “What?”
That’s right, Locke wasn’t there for "Desmond's dramatic arrival at the funeral.
Charlie-“I think he’s pushed your button too many times, if you ask me.” {Charlie has attitude/eyes}.
Locke- “Desmond?”
Yep.
Charlie’s sure Locke and Desmond have a lot to talk about. Charlie gives a quiet chuckle then just walks away.

Sayid hides a gun on the small raft in a blue tarp.
Sayid says to Sun “I’m sorry if what I said was confusing but, I asked Jin to come.”
Sun explains you need at least two people who know how to sail and she'll translate. Sayid notes that Desmond managed by himself.
Sun-“And look where he ended up.” {Jin seems to have understood what Sun just said. Desmond’s boat is very far in the distance.}

At the beach, Claire is contemplating the whole pneumatic injector issue with the baby.
Desmond, still drinking his bottomless bottle of liquor, says "You're wasting your time sister. I shot myself with that stuff every 9 days for 3 years."

Desmond walks over to look at the “lovely” baby and asks, ”Is the father here on the island?”
Claire- “No. He’s been gone a long time.” She shares he walked off when he got scared over the situation.
Drunk Desmond thinks maybe the guy knew he’d be a lousy dad and did what was best for her. Insulted Claire replies, “He was doing what was best for him. “ {That is important, especially said in Desmond's company.}
{Flash}
At the stadium, Desmond is outside his car gearing up for a run. Jack pulls up in the background. {His tee-shirt has an emblem on the left side} Penny pulls up. {Jack runs up the steps.} Des is surprised but not shocked to see her.
Desmond-“How did you find me?
Penny was able to find him due to her affluence. "With money and determination, you can find anyone." She asks if he read his beloved book, the one he was saving.
Desmond- “Not yet.” She thought he might have read while he was away.
Des was he was in prison, “not away”.
Penny gets teary eyed and asks why he didn’t write to her. He doesn't give an answer to that question, just asks when she'll get married. They have yet to set a date.
Desmond-"I'll be back in a year."
Pen- "What if you were back right now?"
Desmond tells Pen that he's going to win this race, “his” race and in a year he'll be back.
Penny- “Desmond, what are you running from?”
Desmond- "I have to get my honor back. And that's what I'm running to." He runs off.

The beach at night:
Locke approaches Desmond {He's still drinking his bottomless bottle of liquor; finally finishes the Dharma Chardonnay and tosses it.} and asks, “So, what did 1 snowman say to the other snowman?"
Desmond, who seems happy to see him says, "Smells like carrots." {Des has a bottle of Dharma Merlot.} They both smile seemingly happy to see each other.
Locke- “Hello Desmond.”
Desmond-“Hello yourself Boxman.”
Locke shares a sip from the bottle. Desmond notes that he/Locke managed to fix the computer.
Locke- "The world's still here aint it?"
Desmond isn’t so sure about that.
Locke asks Desmond to refresh his memory. {YEAH!! Refresh it!}
Locke-"How long did you say you were you down in the hatch?"
Desmond- "Three years.”
Locke-"What if I told you that, for all that, all those years that you and all the men before you, were down there, pushing that button. What if I told you it was all for nothing?"
Desmond-"I’d ask ya how the hell you'd know something like that?"
Locke-"I found another hatch. Another station on the island. They called it the Pearl. And I saw a film there. An orientation film. And it said that everything that was happening in our hatch wasn't real. That it was a test. A psychological experiment." {"He" found another hatch! Eko did too!}
Desmond feels he's lying, so Locke presents the video tape to him.
Locke-"You want to take a walk? I'll make the popcorn."
Desmond gets mad, "You're so sure it's not real, then just stop pushing the button."
Locke says he has stopped, but someone else decided to start. He tells Desmond to sober up, "We're going to get a good night's sleep, tomorrow we're gonna find out what happens if that button doesn't get pushed."

Hurley sits starring at the campfire. Sawyer offers him a Dharma nutribar but Hurley’s not hungry.

Michael out in the jungle is breathing heavy, stressed and sweating. You can see he’s got some heavy thoughts on his mind. Jack asks is he’s alright. Michael tells him he’s just getting some more fire wood and that he’s not feeling too hot. Jack tells Michael he shouldn’t be out there alone; so he gives him a hand. Michael thanks Jack for coming out here, risking his neck for his boy.
Jack-" Live together, Die alone, man."
Michael-“Yeah.”
Daylight:
Sun, Jin and Sayid sail around the island. Sun pukes over the side of the boat. Jin remarks that he told her not to come. She says it’s not seasickness. {Seasick sailor.}
There’s something Jin wants her to see. Sayid is looking through binoculars.
They see a 4 toed statue in the water near the shore of the island.
Sayid-“I don’t know what is more disquieting. That fact that the rest of the statue is missing or that it has four toes.”

Eko is in the computer room of the Swan hatch. He is carving into his stick. {9 22 next to the word revelation. The log print out is underneath the stick with 9 22} the electricity is blinking and buzzing. The power goes out leaving him in the dark!
Something resets and things power back up. {You can hear winding up sound}

The countdown clock shows 101 00.
Eko, armed with his stick and flashlight, gets up to investigate. The hatch door is wide open. There is a humming sound. He sees that a fuse has been tampered with.
The static countdown with the woman's voice starts. 8… 7...6... We see Desmond handling some live wires trying to spark a connection. …5….4…. Locke enters the computer room.
The countdown clock shows 101 00. An alarm sounds and the blast doors go down!
Eko runs to try to get back to the computer. While trying to get in his stick ends up with Locke inside the blast door sealed computer room. Eko is locked out!
Locke tells Desmond that's a neat trick! {The whole making the blast doors go down thingy} Eko is yelling for John from the other side of the blast door. Desmond hopes that Locke is sure about this.
Locke- "I'm more sure about this than anything in my entire life." {Did they get a good night's sleep? Is this a day later? The same day?}
Des-"Alright then Boxman…we wait."
{Flash}
It's a very stormy night.
Desmond is on the sailboat in this storm. His boat is getting tossed around by the violent waves. He’s holding on to the wheel trying to keep control of the boat. He ties up the wheel with rope. Then Des heads below deck, grabs his 'Our mutual friend' book, seals it in plastic for protection, and wraps duct tape around the plastic.
Back on deck Desmond falls, hits his head and gets knocked out. {Yeah, didn't see that coming. LOL!}
Flashes of Desmond waking up face down on shore.

A man in a yellow chemical/environmental/HAZMAT protective suit and mask picks him up then drags Desmond through the jungle on a stretcher made form branches.
{Note that things are very blurry, jumbled and distorted! One person is perceived as 2 or more people.}
We then see Desmond lying in the bunk bed trying to get some clarity.
The man removes the book from Desmond's protective plastic wrap and throws the book! Then he begins to remove his protective gear as Desmond appears to watch him.
The man in the yellow suit whispers, "Are you him?…What did 1 snowman say to the other?" Desmond has no idea what this man is talking about.
This is Kelvin Inman. Inman says that he found Desmond washed up on the beach, there was no boat. Kelvin is wearing a Dharma jumpsuit with the Swan patch on it. The beeping starts.
Desmond follows him into the computer room.
Kelvin, half in/half out of his Hazmat suit, enters a code and the clock resets.
Desmond asks "What was all that about then?"
Kelvin, seeming to not give a shit says, "Just saving the world." {Kelvin walked by the same new washer/dryer that is in the hatch with the Castaways. How new/old are those appliances, really?}

Desmond is watching the orientation film on the reel to reel projector.
{Note the audio sounds backwards. Desmond stops then starts the projector and it fixes itself.}

The film: “Not long after the experiments began however, there was an incident. And since that time the following protocol has been observed. Every 108 minutes the button must be pushed. From the moment the alarm sounds you will have 4 minutes to enter the code into the microcomputer processor.” {Note Candle is in a room within a room and there is an EXIT}

Kelvin asks Desmond how many times he's going to watch that thing. {How many times? Hmm?!} Desmond asks why there are missing parts.
Kelvin mentions Radzinski (his partner) made some edits. Kelvin is suiting up to go outside. He uses Duct tape to make his suit airtight.
Desmond wonders what happened to his partner but he doesn't answer.
Kelvin wants Desmond to be sure to put the film back behindTurn of the screw’ when he’s done. Desmond asks why he wears that suit. Kelvin explains he wears the suit so he doesn't get infected out there. He gives Desmond the pneumatic injector and tells him to give himself a shot of this every 9 days, “You were out there a while before I found you. I hope it's not too late." {Manipulation-con}

In the computer room Desmond asks Locke, “Who is he, Boxman? The man out there pounding on the door.”
The timer shows 99 00. You can hear Eko pounding and yelling for John to open up the door.
John sits calmly, “His name is Mr. Eko.”
Desmond wants to know why Mr. Eko carries around a stick covered in scripture.
Locke says he's a priest.
Desmond- "We locked out a priest?"

Eko looks around; there’s a hum. He climbs out of the hatch and sees the blown open hatch door with the word Quarantine stamped on it.

Charlie is playing guitar on the beach. Eko runs up to him, “Charlie, do you know how they got the hatch door open?!”
Charlie- “No but if you hum it I can probably play it.”
Charlie reveals they blew it up. Eko needs Charlie’s help.
Charlie- "Oh now I'm back in your good graces, father?"
Eko frantically tells him about John locking him out of the hatch. Eko believes John is going to stop pushing the button. If John is successful, Eko is absolutely certain that in 90 minutes everyone on the island will die! {WOW!}
Charlie thinks about it for a few seconds, and says he's in.

In the jungle, Sawyer asks Michael if he thinks these Others are left over from the Dharma folk. Michael doesn't know.
Sawyer's theory is that they're aliens, “That's why they use the fake beards; their heads are made of prosthetic.”    Except he says the word prosthetic wrong and Hurley corrects him. Sawyer remarks about being corrected by a guy that can’t spell so he asks Freckles for her opinion.
Kate tells them to keep moving, “We’re being followed...Just keep smiling.”
Kate notes there are at least 2 of them across the river.   In 5 seconds she's gonna turn the tables on them. She asks Sawyer, “You in?”
Kate opens fire on them! One is dead, another is getting away. Kate wants to go after the one who got away. Jack says no.
Sawyer yells, “You crazy! You let him go they’ll know we’re comin'! He’ll warn them!”
Jack says it doesn’t matter if they catch him now, they’ve already been warned. He realizes Michael was indeed part of the set up. Jack knows Michael is lying and demands he tell everyone what he’s doing.
Michael reveals “It was the only way. They gave me a list…It had your names on it. I had to bring all four of you back or they said I’d never see my son again.”
Michael swears to Jack these people live in a camp with huts.
Jack takes the list from him. They now know Michael let Henry go, and killed the girls. He had to kill the girls, there was no other way. Killing Libby was a mistake; he didn’t have time to think. Hurley asks him if he had time, would he still have killed them. Michael is still claiming this is all about his son.
Upset Hurley says he's going back.
Jack talks him into staying. Jack apologizes for bringing them out there, but they have to follow the plan.
Sawyer wants to know “What plan?” {Apparently Jack has a plan.}

Sayid is on the boat, kneeling, praying.
Jin sees something through the binoculars. He leaves the wheel and shows Sayid some sort of rock structure. {Sun is at the wheel}
Sayid says that's the rock Michael described, "We're here."

Charlie and Eko are in the jungle looking for the spot that (Charlie says) Hurley showed the explosives he hid. Eko says they are running out of time. Of course Charlie finds the dynamite under leaves, wrapped in a blue/white beach towel.
Charlie warns him to be careful, “Dynamite is very unstable. Don’t handle it like Dr. Arzt.”
Eko brings the dynamite to the hatch.
Charlie is trying to get focused Eko to listen, “What if we hurt them or blow up the computer?”
Eko tells him he can leave now.
Charlie pleads with John beyond the blast door.
Desmond is twirling Eko’s stick.
Charlie says they should try to work this thing out. Charlie is trying to express to John that "Eko is very upset” and they should open the door and talk about it. Eko is running the fuse line. Charlie tells John Eko is going to blow open the blast door with dynamite from the old ship in the jungle.
Desmond tells him not to bother. It would take an atom bomb to do the job.
Locke-“You sure it’ll hold?”
Desmond looks at a damaged/crushed metal cart,Aye. I’m sure.”
{Flash}
Desmond is playing with 2 wires to start a connection. {The electronic woman’s voice counts down.}
The timer shows 9100 When the countdown reaches 3…2…1… Des makes the Blast Doors go down for the lockdown. He smiles when the blast door can’t completely crush a metal cart.
Kelvin is pouring laundry detergent out into a measuring cup. {He mixing up stuff to act as invisible/glow ink}
Desmond asks how he knows where he left off from.
Kelvin inspects the blast door, “Slowly, Des.Very, very slowly.”
Kelvin paints the Blast Door Map. He says this whole baby was Radzinski's idea. He has a photographic memory. Radzinski also figured out how to fake a lockdown and created this great invisible map.
Desmond considered these tales about Kelvin’s former partner.
Kelvin shows Desmond a brown stain on the ceiling, "That's Radzinski."    Radzinski put a shotgun in his mouth when Kelvin was asleep. {Sam Toomey also killed himself this way} Kelvin only had 108 minutes to bury the poor bastard.
Desmond- “Well, if you don’t want me to go crazy, next time let me go out.”
Kelvin- "What? You want to go out there with the quarantine and the hostiles?”
Desmond says he hasn't been outside for two bloody years, “Yes, I wanna go. I was in the Army for god sake.”
Kelvin mocks him- "Oh yeah, Her Majesties army…Tell me Desmond, why did you leave that nice old ladies army. Oh, I remember now, you got kicked out because you couldn't follow orders?"
Desmond asks him why he left his army.
Kelvin shares with contempt, "Because men followed my orders. But then, thank god, I joined the Dharma initiative. Namaste. Thank you and good luck."
Desmond begs to go out just once.
Kelvin-"Sorry. You stay here and push the button. That's an order." {Is Kelvin still in a role of giving orders? Is he still in command of an Army? Hmmm? By the way, it’s a good thing Radzinski was the same size as Desmond. Otherwise he wouldn't have a Dharma jumpsuit to wear. HA!}

Back inside the hatch Charlie is still pleading with John. He tells John seriously he’s about to be detonated.
Charlie then talks to Eko, who is still working intensely on his explosives.
Charlie-"What if John's right? Maybe it's just some colossal joke. Just some old computer connected to nothing. Maybe it's a bunch of wires that…"
Eko rips off Charlie's belt and throws it against the Wall/magnet!
Eko- “Is that a joke?”
Charlie sees himself out and takes his belt too.
Eko tells John “This is your last chance to end this. Open the door and I will forgive you.”
Locke- “Forgive me for what?”
Eko blesses himself. Charlie, still in the hatch, begs Eko to wait and tries to talk him out of it. Tells him it's not a good idea, they're in a very confined area. Eko lights the fuse with Dharma matches. Charlie runs! The TNT blows!
{Flash}
Desmond wakes up to the sound of the alarm.
He calls out for Kelvin, enters the code in the computer resetting it. Desmond hears a voice coming from another hatch in the ground of the computer room. It’s drunk Kelvin under the computer room with a key.
Desmond goes down there.
We see Caution System Termination, failsafe key.
Kelvin is swinging the key on its chain like a pendulum, says he couldn't do it. He tells Desmond this is the only other way out partner. Failsafe, “Turn this key and this all goes away. Poof."
Desmond asks what's behind that wall, “What was the incident?”
Kelvin- "Electromagnetism. Geologically unique. The incident {he snorts a laugh) there was a leak. So now the charge builds up and every time we push the button, it discharges it. Before it gets too big. “
Desmond- "Why make us do it, push the button? If we could just…"
Kelvin laughs, "Here's the real question Desmundo. Do you have the courage to take your finger out of the dam? Blow the whole thing up instead?"
{Eko is at least willing to blow up something. LOL}

Live Together Die Alone Part 2.

Disclaimer: I never claim to know everything about the show and my thoughts by no means make me right. The things I share here are my views and/or opinions. I don't claim to catch every single detail either. You all know I hate spoilers, and I stand clear of reading certain sites as to not take me off my own course of research. The one thing I don't need to do here is rehash all of the obvious clues from an episode, we all know what they are. Understood? Good. Let the fun begin! I'll only note things that I know come up as clues later, but need to be noted when they first show up and things I find that will be of importance. It will get very exciting as we progress into the story.
