"We Have to Go Back!" The ODI LOST Podcast.

                       "We Have to Go Back!"

The whole team is back including myself, Vozzek aka Danny and of course The ODI!
When we started chatting about what we should do for our new LOST podcast we threw several ideas around, but the important thing was to look back at some of the earlier mysteries, themes, issues, episodes and specific characters, based on what we all now know...or think we know.

We felt that we should start all the way back at Season 1 with the ever important Pilot episode, and then work our way through the seasons focusing on important topics, characters and mysteries.   With our discussion about Pilot, we focus on the importance of Dr. Jack Shephard and his arrival on the "Island".

We're not going episode to episode like we did in our weekly recap, but we will tackle many major points; so things will vary with each podcast until we find some sort of set formula.

If you guys have thoughts, questions, ideas or topics you want us to cover we are an open book, plus this is your opportunity to hear our thoughts.

The new podcasts probably wont be as long as our traditional recap podcasts, but we are still having a bunch of fun and talking about crazy ideas.  As always we'll keep it real!

We are really excited to be doing this again and we look forward to trying to give you podcasts on a regular basis.  I doubt it will be weekly, but maybe every couple of weeks or so.  Make sure you let all of your Lostie friends know we are back and that they should subscribe again if they un-subscribed.

Don't forget to use the drop down menu for all my detailed episode notes, also check out the top tabs for additional insight to LOST.
For those seeking Vozzek's/Danny's recaps, just head over to Darkufo for all of his great articles.

This new podcast was posted on iTunes last night and it already has several hundred downloads. We appreciate all of you staying loyal to LOST and our podcast. If you can not access iTunes here is an audio player with a download link.

Enjoy!!

Circling Back Around

Hi Losties!
Let's talk about LOST... AGAIN!

To read original episode notes without being spoiled, click on:
PILOT Part 1 and Part 2
TABULA RASA
WALKABOUT

On September 22, 2004 Dr. Jack Shephard was a passenger on board Oceanic flight 815 en route from Sydney Australia to Los Angeles; he was transporting the body of his father, Christian Shephard back home to be buried.  Jack wakes up in a bamboo forest on a mysterious "Island" where his plane "crashed".
We witness a specific group of people who become a close circle of friends via the adventurous journey that brought them together.

Your orientation:
For LOST fans that are new to the detailed episodes at Karen's LOST Notebook,  I'd like for you to see how to utilize the original notes; I bold type and/or underline words and phrases, as they MAY BE potential clues, items of importance, or they are indeed an established continuing clue line.  You will also note dates on the bottom of those notes/posts to see when they were originally posted.

For the re-watch I will always link you back to those original notes for each episode, as I stand by those detailed recap observations, so click on those links.  I feel they contain valuable information and must be read first.
I'll incorporate the Missing Pieces Mobisodes and ARG information as well.   The posts I make with the yellow post it note at the top (like the one above) will be additional information for each episode (which may spoil you).  So you have a choice on which way to use my notes for your re-watch.

It will become obvious that I always spotlight the metaphor of LOST, as it is the essence of the story.
This post is really a short overview through these three episodes.

A tip before you begin Season 1:  Season one mirrors season six, and remember Jack was not on "Jacob's List".    It is very important to really look and see, listen and hear and keep an open mind to what you are shown.  Our lesson is..."Careful observation is the only key to true and complete awareness".
Now let's have some fun!

And so it begins...
To start down the rabbit hole of this epic tale we must start at the earliest moments of its narration. The "Missing Piece" titled So It Begins depicts the moments before we're introduced to Dr. Jack Shephard. It is important to watch this clip and to read my brief notes on it. {Click the link for notes}

Pilot: Part one and Part two
Jack wakes up in the bamboo forest.  He has an injury that required a couple of stitches with standard black thread, from Nurse Kate Austen. Jack's tiny travel bottles of liquor that were in his pocket from the plane were not broken upon his supposed "impact".
We learned through the six seasons that stubborn Jack was indeed an alcoholic and drug addict with emotional issues and pain, yet even with addiction we never saw him boozing it up or hitting the heroin and drugs on the "Island".
While watching those opening moments I cannot and will not take back the feeling I had the very first time I saw Jack open his eye and make his way to the chaos and the screams for help from survivors on the beach. To me it still was as if he was "placed" in that spot, as were the other castaways.  As we go through the story we learn that Jack indeed had to "start over" in the same starting position more than once.
Jack assumes the role of the "Island" hero.   He literally breathes new life into Rose.
Jack clues us into how he copes with fear with is "counting to five" method, and that he also is familiar with flying a plane as he took flying lessons.
We are introduced to the mysterious monster that sounds more mechanical in nature than organic. But whatever it is, is appears to be huge.
Jack, Kate and Charlie head out to retrieve the transceiver from the cockpit. Along the way we learn that Charlie is the bass player for the one hit wonder band "Drive Shaft".     Poor Altar boy Charlie is a heroin addict.

It's important to note that Jack runs past the white tennis shoe in the jungle yet we see Christian wearing both shoes in So it Begins.
Vincent the wonder dog plays a role in this story...by the way...he's a "lab".

Shannon sunbathes while the other castaways sort through wreckage and belongings because she feels "You're wasting your time. They're coming."   Mind you Jacob whispers "They're coming" after Ben stabs him, utilizing the "loophole" in The Incident.  There are a lot of connections between Pilot and The Incident including Jack's "count to five" fear trick.

Tabula Rasa
Here on the "Island" everyone gets a new start, a do-over.  But is the concept based on the idea that they don't know each other and their past histories, or is it based on the "starting the adventure run through" again?

In this episode Kate's name is Annie and she's from Canada.  We learn she is indeed a fugitive on the run from Marshal Edward Mars.  She seeks refuge in one-armed Ray Mullens pen on his farm in Australia.

Michael attempts a new beginning with his son.  Sun and Jin also take advantage of this "do over".
Jack searches the fuselage for medicine while Sawyer is there taking whatever he can get his hands on for future trade leverage in the wild.

When I first saw this episode six years ago I realized that Locke shared a connection to the "monster".

I'm adding the "Missing Piece- Jack, Meet Ethan?" here because there really isn't a more distinct episode to place it in.

Walkabout
:
This awesome episode sheds light on the fact that the great white hunter, Mr. John Locke is misrepresenting himself.   Locke is also keen on playing games, especially military strategy games.
Here again we hear "monster sounds" linked to Locke when he uses his adding machine.

Kate shares with Jack that she's a vegetarian when she offers to go boar hunting with Locke and Michael; She claims to have experience with this particular type of hunting.   But I call fucking shenanigans on Kate claiming to be a vegetarian as she ate bacon and eggs with Ray Mullens in Tabula Rasa.

The moral of the story thus far...You have to learn how to walk before you can run.

The following are just a few of the topics,themes and layers that we'll explore over the course of our re-watch.

Probability:
What is the likelihood that these people "crash" on an "Island" and survive, sustaining superficial physical wounds?
There is a "loop" concept to the entirety of the story, so with that said...If Jack and the castaways have to run through these adventures over and over until they "get it right", it makes sense that "rescue" won't be coming because they have to "heal/fix" themselves first.

Secrets:
Locke asks Walt "Do you wanna know a secret?"    What exactly is this secret?  Walt only shares with Michael in Tabula Rasa that Locke feels a "miracle" happened to him.
Every one of them has secrets and skeletons in their closets.
Apparently the major question of "Guys, where are we?" wasn't going to technically revealed.

Game:
There is no doubt the game element is given to us right from the start and encompasses not only the "Island" game and John Locke's role in it, but the metaphor and literal struggle within Jack and the castaways.
It is important to understand the concept of the first game we're introduced to as many clue words connect to it. We explore other games along the journey.
Backgammon:  Two Players, two sides, one light, one dark: playing pieces are moved according to the roll of dice. Players win by removing all of their pieces from the board. Luck and strategy play a part.   Players roll the dice and choose from numerous options for moving their pieces and anticipate possible counter-moves by their opponent.  You can raise the stakes during the game.
Each side of the board has a track of 12 long triangles, called points. The points are considered to be connected across one edge of the board, forming a continuous track in the shape of a horseshoe, and are numbered from 1 to 24. Players begin with two checkers/pieces on their 24-point, three checkers/pieces on their 8-point, and five checkers/pieces each on their 13-point and their 6-point. The two players move their checkers/pieces in opposing directions, from the 24-point towards the 1-point.  Points 1 through 6 are called the home board (inner board), and points 7 through 12 are called the outer board. The 7-point is referred to as the bar point, and the 13-point as the mid point.
The tree of positions expands rapidly because of the number of possible dice rolls and the moves available on each turn. There are cheating methods used.

Word Games and puzzles:
Continuing in the line of "games" it is important to note when "word play" is present.  This happens all the time.   Words will prove to have another/multiple meanings other than was originally assumed and anagrams are given.   We also witness characters doing crossword puzzles on the "Island".

Science - Faith:
The first person Jack seeks the assistance of right after he "arrives" on the beach is John Locke.   Jack is a man of science and Locke is a man of faith.  It seems to me that the "faith" part of the story was addressed in the finale but the science part really wasn't.  Regardless, one goal seems to be finding balance between the two.

Opposition:
John Locke is Jack's opposition throughout the entire story.   There are many times throughout the story they seem to be two halves of a whole in need of balance.  There is a constant pulling at both sides.

The Metaphor:
When you watch the show in this manor, even with its veiled cryptic symbolism, you can still see that we're told the story of "lost" people who have been cast away from their lives and need to find themselves.   They are on a "Walkabout", a journey of self discovery, the path to enlightenment.   Zen Buddhism plays a large role.  I mean after all, we're introduced to the "Dharma Initiative"!

The Mythology:
When you watch the show to learn about the Delphian puzzling bits about the "Island",  I found that most of the time it ended up being smoke and mirrors, a distraction from the truth.   But the mythology will be explored nonetheless as there is pertinent ties.  (And I have hope that they will come back around.)

The Magic:
Yes, the magic!  Illusions and make believe.   You must tap into your imagination along this adventure.   After all we can't explore "Wonderland" and all its fantastical imagery without understanding the power of a magic box.

Repetition:
People, names, jobs, roles, items, clothes, images, places, scenarios, and dialogue are repeated over and over throughout the experiences of Jack and the castaways.
One tiny example is Kate admits to Jack she sewed the drapes in her apartment and in Raised by Another, Claire connects drapes to feeling grown up.   You'll see many more examples with clear connections.

Mental and Emotional Issues:
Behavior, addiction, depression, distress, shut down, suffering, misery,  problems, insane,  paranoia, catatonic, delusional and Santa Rosa all have a place in the "Island's" bloody snow globe.
Jack and the Lostie's carry a lot of baggage and for some it literally cripples them.   The lesson on this journey is to let go of the things that hurt, fix themselves and find their way home. A lot of their pain seems to stem from childhood trauma.

The Heart:
What is in the heart?  Who has murder in their heart?    Can a  broken heart be healed?

The Mind:
Head. Consciousness, subconscious, sleep, dreams, lucidity, nightmares, hallucinations, hypnosis, visions, dizzy, headache, head injury, vision, memory, remember, forget, pass out, knocked out, and drugged out and brain washing.

Are choices made with the heart or the mind?

Numbers, colors and symbols:
The colors can connect to the colors associated on the Bagua.   Colors are emphasized in every episode either by the common clothes colors that are worn by the "Island" residents or literally by color washing over the entire scene.  It's fascinating.  Be warned to watch out for changing eye colors throughout the characters; this happens all the time.
We get "symbols" and images referencing important hints all the time.  Be on the lookout for those Dharma-Zen-Buddhist symbols, i.e. wheel, temple, fish, spiral, Dogen, etc.

The "Island":
All roads lead to the "Island" and events and experiences always blur together.   Does the "Island" fit into "science" or "faith" of the story?

At times the show can feel like a game, or a puzzle or even a riddle.  It can make you feel like you talk yourself in circles when trying to explain to your friends what the show is about.  But the  experience with this story cannot be solved by reason alone, but instead forces us to solve it through flashes of insight.
We will get into many more themes and layers as we journey along with the rest of the castaways, some of you for the very first time and for others like me...all over again.

Love to all who are "LOST"™

September 8, 2009

One of Them.

Let's talk about LOST!  One of Them.

"They're getting closer! Move it!"

The Iraqi soldiers including Sayid are hurrying to burn and shred files and papers while there is bombing going on all around them.

Tariq is yelling "Keep shredding you cowards! We leave when I say! {hits a soldier.} Stop again, and I'll kill you myself! I'm your commanding officer and you will do..."
The American soldiers barge in demanding to know who's in charge.   The Sergeant wants the Iraqi soldier, who is not distracted by his task of destroying the files, to stop what he's doing.   Another American soldier says "They don't understand" but the Sergeant knows they do understand. {Of course they understand, in our story there are no language barriers-really}
The Sergeant threatens to fire on 3 if he doesn't stop shredding, "One...Two..."    Sayid bolts up and tells the shredding dude to stop or they'll kill him.
The Sergeant asks Sayid, "You in charge?"
Sayid says he is not, and when asked who is in charge he lies and says  there  is no commanding officer here; he left for Hillah two hours ago.
The Sgt.-"Your English is good, Abdul, but you're lying. And that ain't so good.",and he hits him with his rifle. {Knocked out!}

At the military base Sayid is taken inside by Sgt Austen.
Sgt Austen says to Sayid, "Let's go, hombre Son, we don't want to be here anymore than you do.   Your pal, Saddam, had to go marching into Kwait.  Here we all are. Buccelli here says that you speak English. Ever do any translating? "
Sayid-"Formally, no."
Sgt Austen-" Hell, the fact you know what "formally" means we're good.    Apache helicopter went down in this sector two days ago.  Our sources tell us the pilot was captured. It's very important that we get this pilot back. We know that he was taken to the local Republican Guard intelligence commander, a man named Tariq.  Do you know him?"
Sayid-"Yes, he was our commanding officer."
Sgt. Austen-"Do you know where he is?"
Sayid-"When the bombing started he fled to Hillah"
They open the double doors and Sgt. Austen welcomes him to Hillah.   Tariq is already sitting inside.
{Flash Whoosh
At the beach, Sayid is cleansing himself in a small trough.  Ana Lucia comes running out of the jungle asking "Where's Jack?"
Sayid wants to know why?
Ana  leads him into to the jungle where they sneak up on Danielle who is just walking around with her rifle, of course.
Ana-"There. See?"
Sayid-"Go back, I'll deal with this...Go back Ana Lucia and don't tell anyone what you saw."   {Sayid has a knife/dagger hanging from his belt}

 Ana Lucia leaves. {Why is Ana sworn to secrecy? What's the big deal? Hmmm?

Sayid approaches Danielle and she says she was looking for him.   She was going to wait until dark and find him at his tent.   {WTF? Look for him? 1st off she knows where he friggin lives!  She's going to wander about in the jungle, keep on wandering, wait for dark and sneak into their camp and wake him? Was she looking for him or going to wait?}

Sayid-"Where are we going?   You said you were looking for me.   What was your plan?   To hide in the woods hoping I would pass you by?"
They walk, she says "They need to keep moving".
Sayid-"Not until you tell me where we're moving to"
She wants him to trust her.  {HA!}
Sayid-"The last time we met you arrived to warn us the Others were coming which they weren't.   In fact, it was a diversion to kidnap Claire's baby.    So pardon me for not trusting you."
Danielle- "This place that I am taking you to...there's something that will help you, something important."     To earn his trust she offers him her rifle.   {Something that will help him what? How?}
{Flash Whoosh}
Cuffed  Sayid interrogating Turiq via questions asked from Sgt Austen.  They want to know where the pilot is.
 Sgt. Austen-"Look, we know for a fact he interrogated the pilot day before yesterday. Hell, probably in this room.    Tell him if we get our man back safe and sound, he goes free."
Sayid translates Austen's English into Iraqi.
Sayid-"They will let you go if you tell them where the pilot is."
Tariq-"You are a disgrace.   You're an Iraqi soldier!   Steal his gun and kill them all.    Right there on his belt.   You can get a few of them before you are killed."
Sgt Austen wants to know what Tariq is saying.
Sayid lies, "He says he does not know."
Sgt Austen-"I was born, but I wasn't born yesterday, son.   Now, if you don't help me out here, someone else will take over.   And that someone, he won't play nice at all."   {So, when were you born? How old are you? And who won't play nice???  Hmm?!!!!}
Sayid-"I am sorry. He does not know."
Sgt Austen starts to leave, "Okay, you had your chance. Guards, lock him back up.
{Flash Whoosh}
At the beach a tree frog is annoying Sawyer who is trying to sleep.
Sawyer asks Jin for help. "This is unbelievable. Hey! Hey, you hear that thing? You hear that frog... that frog?   You want to help me find it?"
Jin gives him a rude brush off.   Sawyer asks, "What? We ain't friends anymore?"

Sawyer, out looking for the frog in the jungle, runs into Hurley who is eating ranch dressing composite.
Sawyer-"What do you got there, Rerun?"
Startled Hurley tells him that the Dharma Initiative ranch dressing will keep in room temperature for up to 7 years.     {It'll keep in room temp for 7 years, but now it's outside!  Or is it? Yuck!   We hear lots of animal/bird sounds in the background.}
Sawyer uncovers Hurley's secret stash that Hurley doesn't want him to tell anyone about.

Sawyer-"What, that you stole food from the group?  Now, why would I want to do that?" Sawyer asks Hurley if he's seen the tree frog and Hurley says "Yeah".
Sawyer makes a deal with Hurley,"Tell you what... you help me find that thing, you can keep right on ranch dipping. We got a deal?"

Sayid walks with Danielle and wonders,"How much further?"  But she doesn't reply. "Danielle?"
Danielle-"We're here."
Sayid-"And where exactly is here?"
Danielle bends down, picks up a bow and arrow set she hid under some leaves.  They hear a man yelling/begging for help, "Help me. Hey, somebody here."   There is a man hanging in a net trap from a tree.

Danielle wants Sayid to listen to her and warns, "Don't believe a word he says. He's one of them"

The man in the trap says he has no idea what she talking about and that she's crazy.

Sayid asks how long has he been up there.
The man-"Since last night.  Please, just cut me down. My name is Henry Gale.  I'm from Minnesota. Please."       Danielle says he's lying.
As Sayid cuts the trapped man down Danielle tells him he's making a serious mistake.
Once freed Henry runs and Danielle shoots him in the shoulder with an arrow; rendering him unconscious.     Sayid is troubled by her shooting Henry without  provocation.
Danielle-"If I wanted to kill him, I would have killed him".

Tie him up, take him to your doctor, he's no good to you dead"   She also says "You talk to him Sayid, as I recall that is what you do. But know this, he will lie, a long time, he will lie."
Sayid ties him up and carries him back to camp.
{Flash Whoosh}
Sayid in cuffs is brought into see Inman who is looking at a file.
Inman-"I want to talk to you about your buddy, Tariq.  Uh, look, I get it.  You're a man who values loyalty.  Even doing a little translating for us... you feel like you're doing the wrong thing.   I get that, and I respect it.   This is what Tariq was doing before he took over command of your intelligence unit.   He was the head of the chemical warfare battalion in the North.   {plays a video tape.}  He personally supervised the use of sarin gas on this village.  {Sayid watches sad and as if hypnotized.} You recognize it, don't you?  You had relatives in that village didn't you, Sayid?  So, you know what Sarin gas does.  No discrimination...the entire marketplace... innocent women, children."
{Nerve gas.}
Pained and compassionate Sayid has seen enough.
Inman-"Loyalty is a virtue. But unquestioning loyalty... I don't think that's you."
Sayid-"Why should I believe you?"
 Inman-"How do you think we knew you had relatives in that village?  We liberated your personnel file, and Tariq's.  All we want is our pilot back, so we can send him home to his family." {The file was under the remote control.}
Sayid will have to make Turiq talk. {Guess how?}
{Flash Whoosh}
In the hatch Sayid tells sleeping Locke to "wake up".    He shows Locke the prisoner. Locke wonders, "Minnesota, huh?"
Sayid-"That's the question, isn't it?"   {They have Henry by the weight bench}
Gale-"Where am I?"
Sayid-"Who are you?
Sayid questions him and we learn:
Henry Gale, four months ago we crashed my wife and I, trying to cross the pacific in a balloon. "She died. She got...she got sick three weeks ago.  We were staying in a cave off the beach. Ah, my shoulder. At least untie my arms."

Jack comes in wondering what's going on.  Sayid explains that Rousseau trapped him in the jungle; she believes he's an Other.
Henry-"An other what?"
Jack-"You shot him with an arrow?"
Sayid-"Do I have a bow?"
Jack will treat Henry.
Jack says to Henry,"Hey, hey, you with me? {to Sayid} What, you were just going to let him bleed to death?"
Sayid was trying to get honest answers while he was able to give them; and Henry's wound is far from life threatening.   Locke suggests they  should let Jack treat him first, then they'll get their answers.
Sayid-"Jack, do not untie him."

In the jungle Sawyer and Hurley are still on the hunt for the tree frog.  Hurley feels this is how people get killed in scary movies.
Sawyer-" If this was a scary movie I'd be with a hot chick not you, Barbar."
Hurley-"It's Babar."
Sawyer-"Why don't you shut up, Hammo. Or your ranch disorder's going to be the new lead item on the coconut Internet."
Hurley admits his fatness but at least people like the fat guy/him.   Hurt Hurley leaves Sawyer to find his own frog.
Sawyer- "Look, man. I'm sorry, alright? This frog is killing me.   You've got to help me out. Please."
Hurley agrees to continue this very important hunt!

Jack removes the arrow from Henry as Sayid and John watch from a few feet away.
John asks Sayid what he thinks.   Sayid wants to know what he thinks.
Locke-"I think he's pretty convincing."   Sayid agrees, but they need to know if he's telling the truth.
Sayid- "Does Jack still have the combination to the armory?"
Locke- "For now he does."
Sayid-"How long would it take for you to change it?"

John is concerned this is about Sayid being angry and punishing someone but Sayid doesn't need to punish anyone; he just wants the truth.    Locke will get started on changing the combination.   They both know Jack will have issues with what must be done to get the truth.

Sayid asks Jack {still working on unconscious Henry} if Henry said anything.
Jack- "No, he didn't.  He was in shock."
John-"We can't just leave him laying here, Jack.  If people see him it'll create a panic."
Sayid suggests they put him in the armory; it's secure.  {It's a good thing Locke and Sawyer moved all the guns out, making room for a prisoner!}
Locke feels it's better to err on the side of safety.   All three men carry Henry into the armory.  Jack says they need the cot to be brought in because Henry shouldn't be on his back.
Jack and Locke exit the armory and Sayid closes himself in with Henry.    He is doing what needs to  be done
{Flash Whoosh}
Sayid enter the room with Tariq carrying the tool box he got from Inman.
Turiq-"They're letting you speak with me alone now?"

Sayid opens the box, "You need to tell me where the helicopter pilot is."

Tariq-"This is their new bluff?   That you're going to torture me?   They think you will do this? Sayid, you are a loyal soldier.   The son of a great hero.   Do not disgrace your father!   You wouldn't dare harm me!    You will follow my orders as your commanding officer.   Take that bag.  Put it over your head and tape it up.   Kill yourself, now!   That's an order.   Do it and die with what little honor you have left."
Sayid-"You would have me take my own life... the information means nothing to you!"
Tariq spits in Sayid's face.   Sayid picks up pliers.
Inman paces Sayid comes in and shares,"The pilot was executed  two days ago.   He's buried in a field  four kilometers from here.   I can take you there."
Worn out Sayid hands the box to Inman. {Bloody hand.}
{Flash Whoosh}
Jack tries the combination and can't open the door.   Jack bangs on the door demanding Sayid open it.
Jack -"Why isn't this combination working John? Did you change it?"
Locke- "Yeah"
Jack -"Why would you do that?"
Locke- "You were raising an army"
Jack- "What?'  {Jack looks confused, like he doesn't know what John's talking about}
Locke- "And why you didn't ask me to help, well that's your business.  There's only one reason to raise an army Jack.  It's because we're at war, and like it or not, whatever Sayid has to do behind that door, well that's a part of it too."
Jack- " What if he's telling the truth, John?'
Locke- "What if he's not?"

In the armory Sayid questions/interrogates Henry.  {ALL IMPORTANT STUFF!}
Sayid- "You said you came to this island four months ago, yes?"
Henry-"Where am I?"
Sayid-" Please, answer my question."
Henry-"Yeah, yes we landed four  months ago. Maybe more. Who are you?"
Sayid-"And you were in a cave for all that time?"
Henry-"Off the beach on the North shore of the Island."
Sayid-" How far from this beach to where you were captured?"
Henry-"I don't know."
Sayid-"How many days' walk?"
Henry-"Two.  Two days."
Sayid-" Why did you stay on the beach for so long?"   {On the beach?, off the beach in a cave?}
Henry-"Why wouldn't we?   We wanted to be there for fly-overs. We had an emergency beacon, a transmitter."
Sayid-"What kind of transmitter?"
Henry-"An ADF beacon. We wanted to make sure we'd be spotted.  Look, whatever you think I am, I'm not. Please, please just... tell me your name."
Sayid-"Your wife, what is her maiden name?"
Henry-"Murphy."
Sayid-"Where did you meet her?"
Henry-"University of Minnesota."
Sayid-" How did she die?"
Henry-" She got sick."
Sayid-"She got sick?"
Henry-"It started as a fever.   After two days she was delirious.   Then she died.   I don't know why you're asking me all these questions.   I don't know why you're treating me this way ...why I have to explain to you who I am when you don't tell me who you are."
Sayid-"I was 23 years old when the Americans came to my country.  I was a good man.  I was a soldier.   And when they left, I was something different.   For the next six years I did things I wish I could erase from my memory...things which I never thought myself to be capable of.    But I did come to learn this... there was a part of me which was always capable.  {Listen to this/Sayid's voice here!It's different. Yes it could very well be just the voice is different due to dubbing, but it's very mysterious indeed.} You want to know who I am?   My name is Sayid Jarrah, and I am a torturer."
{Should Sayid already know who Henry is?}

In the jungle Hurley points out the tree frog; it jumps right at Sawyer and he catches it.
Sawyer-"All that noise from this tiny critter."
It reminds Hurley of a turtle he once had. Its name was Stuart.   It ran off when I was 10. Well, that's what his mom said.   He kind of thinks she threw him out.   Sawyer  looks interested in the frog, "You're a happy, little fella, ain't ya?"
Hurley-"I have an idea. Why don't I take him...far from hereTwo beaches away? Then maybe he'll find a Mrs. Tree Frog.   That way he won't keep you up anymore, and everyone's happy." Sawyer has another idea; he crushes the frog, killing it.  "I hear with a little ranch they taste just like chicken"   He hands the dead tree frog over to Hurley.

Back at the hatch, Jack cleans up the blood on the floor.
John offers to give him a hand but pissed off Jack tells him to shut up.    Jack notices the pliers are missing and asks where the pliers are.

Inside the armory Sayid continues the questioning/interrogation.   He wants to know everything about the  balloon.
We learn she's 140 feet high, 60 feet wide.   And when she's up in the air 550,000 cubic feet of helium and a 100,000 of hot air keep her up.   And if you could look down on her you'd see a big yellow smiley face on top.     He traveled in that way because he was rich, it was his dream, and Jennifer thought it would be neat!
Sayid -"You were rich?"
Henry-"I guess I'm thinking of things in the past tense now.   How's that for optimism? He explains he became rich by selling his company; they mine Non metallic minerals.
"I know, everyone wanted to talk to me at cocktail parties."    Sayid threatens Henry with  the pliers around his finger and wants Henry to listen to him. "You said you buried your wife. Tell me where."
Henry cries-" In the jungle. By the balloon, in the jungle."
Sayid-"How deep? How deep did you dig the grave?"
Henry-"I don't... it was..."
Sayid-"How deep? How many shovelfuls of earth?!   Did you use your hands?!   How long did it take you?!"
Henry-"I don't remember."
Sayid-"You would remember!  You would remember how deep. You would remember every shovelful, every moment! {He cries}  You would remember what it felt like to place her body inside.   would remember if you buried the woman you loved.   You would remember ... if it were true!"
Henry-"Did you... did you lose someone?   Did you lose someone here on the Island?  Did you lose someone, too?  What happened to her?"
Sayid-"It was an accident.  It was an accident.   The woman responsible thought she was someone else...someone coming to hurt her... someone like you!"
Henry-"Just, just... This is all a mistake.   Slow down here, okay.    Hurting me isn't going to bring her back."
Sayid starts beating Henry over and over. "You know what I lost. Tell me how long." {Yes Henry does indeed}
Henry-" No, no. Help! Help me!"
Sayid-"Tell me who you are."

As Sayid is beating Henry he says " You know what I loved!" {Yes Henry does indeed} "Tell me what I already know.  I want to know the truth! Who are you?!"  {Is Sayid remembering anything here?!!!!}  Jack wants the door opened,
Locke- "Jack, this has to happen." {It HAS to happen! Is it written? HA!}
Jack pushes Locke demanding he open the door. The countdown timer starts to beep.  Jack won't let him push the button unless he opens the door!   The alarm is now under a minute! {The alarm starts at 4 minutes, now it's under a minute, ALREADY?}

Locke- "If we don't…You would risk everyone's lives?"
Jack- "You talked me into pushing that button once John, but it's yours now, you're the one who won't risk it. You, Me, I don't think anything's gonna happen when we get down to zero, you wanna see what's gonna happen, let's just see what's gonna happen!"
{Was it Jack's button at one time?  Does he know what happens? Hmmm?}

Locke says Ok, "Right 15",  but "Not stupid" Jack makes him open it.    Locke opens it, runs to the computer, enters the code incorrectly, {types 16 16} re-enters it and this time hieroglyphs are revealed; then noises {machine/fan winding up, bang and clanking.}  He pushes buttons and the timer resets. {RESET}

 Jack removes Sayid from the Armory and the beating of Henry!  Sayid insists he's lying. {Watch Henry's look to Sayid before Jack shuts the door! GREAT!}
Jack asks Sayid-"What the hell was that?"
Sayid tells Jack "He is one of them."
Jack asks if he told him that.
Sayid-No, because I know.  He IS one of them"
Jack- "I think that's what Rousseau thought about you once Sayid. If I'm not mistaken she strapped you down, she shocked you, all because you were one of them."
Locke- "He is."
Jack- "What?"
Locke-"He is one of them. To Rousseau we're all Others. I guess it's all relative, huh?" {AAAHHHH!! I've been saying that all along!}
{Flash Whoosh}
Sayid is being transported. He just stares looking up.
Sgt Austen is looking at a picture of a young Kate.  He asks Sayid if he has a wife and kids, he does not.  They pull over to the side of the road.
Inman tells Sayid "It's over. We're pulling out, not going to Baghdad.   So your man Saddam gets to stay in power which means you, in all likelihood, will remain in his employ. Guess you're lucky you have a new skill set you can use."
Sayid-"What you made me do no human being should ever have to do to another.
Inman uses a knife to cut the cuffs off of Sayid's wrists, freeing him.
Inman speaks Arabic to him.  "One of these days there will be something you need to know. And now you know how to get it."  {Inman lied and can speak and understand; he didn't need a translator!}
Sayid swears "I will never do that again."
Inman gives Sayid money, " Yeah. Good luck to you, Sayid.  Bus fare back to Ramadi. {tells the driver} Let's move out."     {Gave him American money in hundreds;Fuckin' bus fare! Puts it in his pocket}
{Flash Whoosh}
At the beach Sayid confesses to Charlie about the man down in the hatch; a stranger captured by Rousseau, "I beat him, I beat him badly".
Charlie,wearing his black hoodie, wants to know why he's telling him that?
Sayid- "Jack asked me how I knew, knew for sure that this man was lying?   How I knew for sure he was one of them... one of the Others.   I know because I feel no guilt for what I did to him.  But there is no way I could ever explain that Jack or even Locke, because both of them have forgotten."
Charlie -"Forgotten? What?"
Sayid-"That you were strung up by your neck and left for dead.   That Claire was taken and kept for days during which god only knows what happened to her.  That these people, these Others... are merciless... and can take anyone of us whenever they choose…. So tell me Charlie, have you forgotten?"   {YEP! And 'these people' do take them whenever they choose!}

One of Them is a GREAT and IMPORTANT EPISODE!
We see Sayid, a loyal solider of "an army" and he is the son of a great hero.   Who is his great heroic father?   Was Sayid born into the military as Jack was born into being a doctor?  Sayid said after he tortured Sawyer that he didn't want to do that anymore yet here he goes again.  But he will always be a torturer and a soldier because that is his role.

Yes, they ALL have forgotten.   Not just the things that have happened to them while on this "island" trip but everything else too.
Are things erased from their memories?  Did they forget that they belong on the "Island" or are tied to the "Island"?   Are a few of them starting to remember?

Did Danielle bring Sayid to Henry to help him remember? What was her reason for that? Are certain things being put into motion?  Was the 'capture of Henry' planned?  Who could have planned it?   Danielle?   Ana Lucia?   Henry himself?   All of them?
I think Ana has been aware of what her duty is on the island.  I don't think she is unfamiliar with Henry or Danielle at all.  Why would tough girl Ana, who supposedly hates these Others go and get Sayid (Or Jack) instead of taking Danielle out herself?

Henry tells Sayid his story 2 times:
First he says he and his wife CRASHED on the island and then later he says they LANDED on the island!  Well, did he crash or did he land?   Did our Losties crash on the island or did they land? Hmm?!! Yeah!!!!
Is Henry telling a story that we're all somewhat familiar with?  Crash/Land, stay on the beach, go to the caves, 4 months…. Whose story is he telling?   Is it part truth/part lie?  Does he know this information because it's all been written out, it's in a file, lived already, real/not real?     When Henry says "Whatever you think I am, I'm not", he's telling the truth!

The time frame Henry uses (4 month) is close to the time frame I gave you  already for the Losties arrival on the "island" until their rescue.    I wonder if I'm on the right track with that.    Again, we need to keep in mind that it's what we see as 'real' time, not taking into consideration that time maybe different on the island or is irrelevant or anything else freaky like that.

Vocabulary and Research…
You know I highlight "clue" words for you so you can see the clue repeat itself.    There are many words that we get as a clue and are taken at the obvious meaning for the situation, but LOST is FULL of word games!
 * The ADF Beacon transmitter.
- Beacon- Light used as a signal to guide.
Alarm, alert, beam, bonfire, flare, guidepost, heliograph, lamp, lantern, lighthouse, lodestar, pharos, radar, rocket, sign, signal fire, smoke signal, warning signal, watchtower.
* Board game 'Risk'.   A strategic board game.   It uses 2-6 players, Has a map of the world, 42 territories grouped into 6 equal continents.   Take over the world.

For fun, I anagrammed the title. You know me, I'm crazy like that.
ONE OF THEM….The omen of.
An omen is a prediction, a sign of something yet to happen. We see examples of that in this episode.   Example, Locke gets a glimpse of what happens when the computer goes past zero; so many other things too.
In addition to that fun tid-bit I'll ask you if the title of this episode is only about Henry? No

Here we have mention of a high fever and a sickness.  Again I come back to the possibility  that these experiences are happening in the Lostie's heads/minds.   There is a connection with the brain and it's electromagnetic field. {Electric currents, neurotransmitters and such}   Add to that the potential use of machines, MRI, CAT scans, etc..  I'm just saying!!

There is a reason these "Island"  residents are called "castaways"... On some level they have been or feel like cast outs or literally have been cast away from society.  Maybe their patients or inmates somewhere.

Think about it..."Who are you?" seems to be the question at hand.  These people are lost in so many ways and seem to ask "Who are you? Where are we? and many questions regarding their own identity.

I'm very excited for upcoming discussions of Henry.    He is NOT who you think he his!   He's quite clever.   But Sayid also mentions being one way and then became something different.  Transforming and changing.  Look deeper fans!

So... One of them…All of them!

 Love to all who are "LOST"™

Disclaimer: I never claim to know everything about the show and my thoughts by no means make me right! The things I share here are my views and/or opinions. I don't claim to catch every single detail either! You all know I hate spoilers! And I stand clear of reading certain sites as to not take me off my own course of research. The one thing I don't need to do here is rehash all of the obvious clues from an episode, we all know what they are. Understood? Good! Let the fun begin! I'll only note things that I know come up as clues later, but need to be noted when they first show up and things I find that will be of importance! It will get very exciting as we progress into the story.

Born to Run

Let's talk about LOST! Born to Run.

{NO: PREVIOUSLY ON LOST}
A shot of a corn field area.

{Click the pics!}
A convertible car, driven by a blond/light woman, pulls into a motel parking lot. {Backpack in back seat.}
The woman reveals her stash of different state license plates that are hidden under the false floor of the trunk. She changes the Nebraska plate to an Ohio plate on her car.

As a family checks out of their no smoking room, 121, leaving the door open of course, the blond commandeers the room; but not before stealing towels and shampoo. {Note: The family leaves in a red van and the maid walks by the vacated room to open the door to another room. Also note when Kate enters the room she turns the door hanging sign from one side to the opposite side.} She changes her hair color to brown/dark.
This is “Kate”.

Kate interrupts the motel counter clerk from {looks like he’s playing a video game, I think}.

She’s expecting a letter, “Hold for guest arrival.”
Her alias is Joan Hart.  {Heart}
His filing system is in a very interesting shoe box. He gives her the letter.

 She sits in the car {Top closed} reads the letter and cries.
{Cash}
 We get a shot panning up toward the clouds…

{Flash Whoosh}
…A toy plane.
Kate is flying the toy plane in her hands {even tilts it nose down.}.
Charlie-“Platinum!”
He blurts that out as he walks up to Kate strumming his guitar.
Charlie-“As in platinum record. As in a million units sold. Now, Drive Shaft's albums must have spiked when everybody found out that I died in some catastrophic plane disaster. When I come back, alive, it's going to be insane.”
He is SO happy! Kate asks if he thinks the raft will work.
Charlie-“Yeah, of course it will work. Look at that thing. It's not a raft. They built a sodding boat. And when they get picked up… the helicopters will come… making us ridiculously and eternally famous. What's the matter, don't you want to be famous?”
Kate looks over to see commotion by the raft and asks Charlie what he thinks is going on over there.

Arzt- “Sure, you can absolutely wait a few weeks before you launch. I was just assuming you didn't want to die.”

Michael- “So, when is the next time we can launch?”
Arzt tells him maybe four months.
Sawyer- “C’mon, even a weather man on TV don't know what's going to happen. Why are we listening to Arzt?”
Arzt reveals proudly it's because he’s a doctor and Sawyer’s a hillbilly.

Sawyer corrects him, “You're a damn high school science teacher.”
Jack wants to hear what Arzt has to say.
Arzt educates while Jin pulls on a wire. ”It's been raining every afternoon. That means that we are on the cusp on monsoon season. Monsoon season is bad. Now, the trade winds are blowing north right now… shipping lanes are north… so north is exactly where you want to be.”
He continues, “It means that when monsoon season hits the trade winds are going to shift to the south. The raft goes with the wind. Can anyone tell me what is the only piece of land that is south of us?”
The good student Jack {with key around his neck} answers- “Antarctica.”
Arzt-“That's right, Jack. Antarctica.”
Michael- “So, when do we have to leave?”
Arzt tells him, “Yesterday.”
Kate looks concerned.

Kate catches up to Michael and asks, “So obviously you believe him?”
Michael doesn’t know, but isn’t taking any chances. Kate inquires about his preparedness.
Michael-“Kate, no offense, but I've got work to do. Why the sudden interest?”
Kate-“Because I'm going with you.”
Michael tells her the raft’s full, “We need four, we got four.”
This includes Sawyer; they needed the stuff he had so he bought his way on. Kate feels that should only count for the first raft that burned. Michael isn’t going to get into semantics with her…
Kate informs him Sawyer doesn’t even know how to sail but she does. She spent two summers crewing J boats. Michael doesn’t budge and feels a deals a deal. So Kate plays the “Walt” card claiming him going-“It’s dangerous”.
Pissed off Michael decides what’s best for his boy, “And right now what’s best for him is to get the hell off this island. The raft’s full.”
{Flash Whoosh}
Kate walks down the hallway of a hospital with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. There is an announcement for the Hospital chaplain to report the Neuro ICU. This scene is bathed in purple.
Kate tells the nurse behind the glass, “I have a delivery for Diane Jansen.”
Nurse-“Right, she just came up from ICU. She's in room two zero eight. It's around the corner to your right.”
Kate sees an officer sitting, reading a newspaper guarding a room. She uses the flowers to hide her face as she walks by him.

A doctor gets in to his car on parking level 3.
Kate shocks him as she’s been hiding in his back seat.
Tom- “Oh, Katie. What are you doing here?”
Kate shares Diane’s dying of cancer and she owed it to her to go and see her. Tom heard about Diane’s situation. Kate is hiding in the back of his car because she needs his help.
{Flash Whoosh}
Jin is busy working with a wire for the raft’s sail. Sun communicates with one cuff Jin in Korean.
Sun-“Are you going? Please Jin, talk to me.”
Jin says yes and Sun walks away.

Jack asks “How much further?”
Jack and Sayid are walking in the jungle. Sayid tells him they’re almost there. Sayid hadn’t told Jack where they’re going because he feels it's better for Jack to see it for himself but Jack isn’t so sure it is. If Sayid doesn’t tell him why he brought him out there he’s going to turn around.
Locke appears! “He brought you out here because I asked him to. I asked him not to tell you. I wanted you to have an open mind.”
Jack wonders, “Open mind about what?”
Locke motions for Jack to follow him.
Locke shows him…the hatch.
Jack- “My god, what is this thing?”
Locke-“Exactly. I guess it's time we talked about this.”

Michael is dragging a large piece of metal past Sawyer.
Sawyer is drinking water and calls to him. ”Yo, chief. Dumb question here…we're sailing out in the ocean, right?”
Michael-“Do you mind?”
Sawyer wonders why Sulu is packing a suitcase full of salted fish when they should be about to catch fish.
Michael asks him if he knows anything about surviving at sea, I.e., sailing, navigating, steering a raft.
Sawyer-“Do you?
Michael feels it doesn't matter what he knows, “I built it. Maybe you are the wrong guy to go on the raft.”
Sawyer-“You're going to vote me off, Mickey? And who the hell's going to take my place?”

Kate is burning a passport.
Pissed off Sawyer asks Kate what the hell does she think she’s doing.
Sawyer- "Don't give me the aw-golly eyes. Michael just told me you were jockeying for my spot on the raft.”
Cocky Kate says she was just asking some questions and Michael must have misunderstood her.
Sawyer grabs her by the arm because he is on to her and knows what she’s doing. “Yeah, just like I know why you wanted that Halliburton case so bad, the one that belonged to that U.S. Marshal who was flying with us. You were his prisoner.”
Kate-“Let go of me.”
Sawyer-“The only chance of running is getting on that raft, ain't it? We get picked up by a ship and they come back to rescue the rest of you all…there's going to be a nice big asterisk next to your name. Don't worry puddin', your secrets' safe with me. But just so you know… no way in hell you're getting my spot on that raft.”
Kate- “Hey Sawyer. I want your spot; I'll get your spot.” She swaggers away.

Michael and Jin work on the raft. Michael wants Walt to give him the water.
Walt asks him what he and Sawyer were arguing about. {Watch Michael's body language and listen to his words, carefully.}
Michael-“I told him something he didn't want to hear.”
He tells Walt Sawyer wants on the raft badly because he knows it's going to work.
Walt-“When we get rescued we're going to come back for everybody else, right?”
Michael- “Yeah, sure, of course. The thing is…this island, uh, is, uh… finding it again might be hard.”
Walt-“Can't we fly around and look for it?”
Michael-“Absolutely, but there's no guarantees. That's why you and me...”
Michael feels sick, wobbles, fluffs it off and then doubles over in pain. He tells Walt to get Jack. {Jin, who is near them, doesn’t immediately jump down to help.}
Walt runs through the jungle and comes upon Kate and Sun. He tells the girls he needs help with his dad; his stomach is really bad. Kate will get Jack and Sun will take Walt back to Michael. Sun puts her water bottle down on the ground {in the middle of the friggin jungle} and runs off with Walt.

Kate runs through the jungle calling out for Jack; looking for him.

At the hatch Jack asks Locke how long has he known about this.  Locke, who is playing with a stick, reveals three weeks, give or take. {Jack is on the hatch and Locke and Sayid are on the ground outside of the dug up hatch.}
Jack- “Three weeks. You've been out here for three weeks digging this thing up and you never told me about it?” {He kind of knew about a hatch from Boone.}
Locke-“All due respect, Jack, but since when do I report to you?”
Jack-“All due respect, John, but you lied.”
Locke asks Jack how long did he have that case full of guns before he decided the rest of them needed to know, “You used your best discretion. I used mine.”
Jack wonders how they open it.
Sayid is shocked, “What? You want to open it?”
He feels they should bury it, “I brought you here to talk him out of this insanity. Anything could be inside.”
Jack-“Best case scenario there's supplies. Worse case, we use it as a shelter.”
Sayid-“Actually, Jack, I can think of much worse cases than that. You notice anything about this hatch? There's no handle. Could the reason for that be more obvious? Maybe it was never meant to be opened from the outside.”
Locke, Jack and Sayid walk back to camp; hear Kate calling for to Jack. Kate tells Jack it’s Michael; somethings' wrong.
Jack asks Michael, who has great stomach pain, what he had to eat and drink today. Michael had fruit, fish and 2-3 bottles of water. The water comes from the caves just like everybody else’s. Michael insists they have to launch that raft tomorrow. Jack knows that, but he needs Michael to take stay in the shade, take it easy and don’t move around too much. Jack has him lay back. Jack and Locke walk away and Kate tends to Michael telling him to lay down. Walt looks concerned.
{Flash Whoosh}
Kate is at Tom's house looking at pictures of his family on the refrigerator.

Tom is on the phone-“Hello? Hey, Adam. Hey, listen can you carve out some time for me on the MRI? Yeah, it's a favor for a friend of a friend. Um no, that would work out great, okay. Yeah. Thanks, Adam. {Hangs up and notes Kate looking longingly at the pics and tells her} His name's Conner.”
Conner is 22 months old next week. {Note pic of Tom has red eyes.}
Kate comments on the blond boy's beauty; Tom feels “It’s Rachel, it’s not me.”
Tom reveals she’s over in Cedar Rapids visiting her folks; they get back on Sunday. "I got Diane in for an MRI. Now, they'll bring her downstairs to radiology. The appointments not til 5am, so, we've got about three hours to kill.”
Kate- “Tom.”
Tom-“You're welcome.” {Was she going to say thank you?}
Kate-“You think it's still there?”
Tom- ”What?”
Kate-“You know what.”
Tom-“It's the middle of the night, Katie.”
Kate-“We might not get another chance."
They drive to a big tree with some cattle/steer grazing. Kate counts off six paces and they dig.
{Flash Whoosh}
“What do you think it is? Heat stroke?” asks Locke.
Jack doesn’t think so as Michael would have felt that coming on. It couldn’t be bad fruit or raw fish because Jin’s not sick and they’re on the same diet. Jack feels what was making him sick was metabolized fast; it hit him quick and it hit him hard. He looks through the cooler of empty bottles and comes up with one that proves something was put into the bottle of water.
Jin is working on the raft with a few of the camp residents.
Michael {white towel on his head} tells Jack the cramps are quieting down; as long as he doesn’t move or breathe. They notice Hurley and Locke chatting.
Michael asks-“You and Locke kiss and make up? {Jack shakes his head, no.} Good.”
Michael needs some water so Jack gives him one he knows isn’t tainted.
Michael-“Somebody did this to me?”
Jack doesn’t know; he’s not sure of anything yet. Walt sits nearby them watching and listening.
Michael states,“Sawyer.”

Hurley and Locke chat.
Hurley-“I'm on bamboo duty, but yeah sometimes I help refill the water.”
Locke inquires if Michael and Jin are getting along. Hurley says they fight like a married couple building a raft together.   Jack walks over and shares with Locke that Michael thinks Sawyer might have done it.
Hurley interjects, “Oh, because of Kate?”
Jack-“Kate?”
Hurley-“Yeah, I guess she wants on the raft. So Sawyer went off on Michael because, you know he gets to decide who goes. Hey, you don't think Kate did it do you?”
Locke wonders why Kate would poison Michael.
Hurley-“Well, you know… the whole… fugitive thing.”
Jack gives Hurley a “Ya opened your big mouth look”.
Hurley-“He doesn't know. Well how am I supposed to keep straight who knows what around here? I mean Steve didn't even know about the polar bear!”
Locke asks what she did. Jack doesn’t know but suggests Locke ask her.
Locke-“And you didn't think the others should know about this, Jack?”
Jack-“Discretion, John.”

Aaron sleeps in his crib. Charlie plays and bops to the tune he’s playing on guitar, as Claire simultaneously trims his hair. Claire needs him to stop moving or she’ll cut his ear off. Charlie is very happy that he is writing again, “I'm really feeling it as well. So, what's the first thing you're going to do when we get rescued?"
Claire doesn’t know. Charlie tells her she can hang out with him in L.A.. “You and turnip head. You know, until you figure things out.”
She thanks him.
Happy Charlie finds that smashing. “Okay, check this out. This is track two. It's called... Claire forces him to keep his head straight-eyes forward while she cuts} Sorry. It's called ‘Monster Eats the Pilot’.”

Jack is in the caves looking through the Oceanic-medical cart and Kate comes in asking how Michael is doing. Jack says he’s fine. Kate wonders if somebody is going to take his place on the raft, “because Dr. Arzt said if they leave tomorrow…”
Jack cuts her off and outright asks her if she poisoned Michael. Kate is shocked and insulted he’d think that!
Jack-“He's not sick, someone did this.”
Kate-“Do you really think I'm capable of that?”
Jack-“I don't know what you're capable of.”
Kate turns and walks away. {Watch her face.}
{Flash Whoosh}
Kate digs while Tom gets a beer from the car.
Kate-“You brought beer?”
Of course he did as he’s a self respecting Iowa man. Kate chugs some. Tom feels it’s not fair; her coming back here, home. Kate knows.
Kate digs and hit something metal-ish. She retrieves an old rusty New Kids on the Block lunch box. In the box is a red Westhills ball cap, the toy plane, a cassette tape.

Tom- “Oh my god. My plane. I can't believe I let you talk me into putting this in there.
Kate indicates no it wasn’t, “That was your idea.” She picks up the tape, “Kate and Tom, 1989.

They listen to the tape in the car. We hear the voices of sweet younger versions of themselves dreaming of their future.

Tom-”Is it on? I don't think it's on.”
Kate- “It’s on.”
Tom- “Okay, uh, this is Kate Austen and Tom Brennan and this is um, our dedication for our time capsule, here on August 15th, 1989. Hey, give me that back.”
Kate- “Why are you putting this stupid plane in there?
Tom- “Because it's cool, Katie. I got it when I flew to Dallas by myself.”
Kate- “Ooh, that is cool, just like this time capsule.”
Tom- “It'll be totally cool when we dig it up in like… 20 years.”
Kate- “How do you know we'll be together?
Tom- “Because we'll be married and you'll be a mom and we'll have nine kids.
Kate- “I don't think so. As soon as I get my license we should just get in a car and drive. You know, run away.”
Tom-“You always want to run away, Katie.”
Kate- “Yeah…and you know why.”
The tape stops
Tom- “Funny how things turn out, huh?"
Kate-“Yeah.”
Teary eyed Kate kisses Tom; Kate is sorry.
Tom just suggests they get to the hospital. They drive off.
{Flash Whoosh}
Locke is sitting by a campfire mixing up some gunk paste in a coconut shell with his big knife. Walt walks over warily to him. He sees Locke has an injured leg and asks if it hurts. Locke admits it does; he had a little accident. Locke asks Walt if there’s something he want to tell him.
Walt-“I didn't do it.”
Lock-“Didn't do what?”
Walt- “I heard Jack. He thinks somebody got my dad sick. And I didn't do it.”
Locke- “You think because I know you burned the first raft that I'd think you made your dad sick? {He nods.} We're friends, Walt. I didn't tell on you before and I'm not going to tell on you now. {Locke touches Walt’s wrist.} And I know you would never do anything to hurt your dad.
Walt looks down at Locke's hand and quickly pulls his arm away as if he's afraid.
Locke-“What's the matter?"
Walt-“Don't open it.”
Locke-“What'd you say?”
Walt-“Don't open it, Mr. Locke. Don't open that thing.”
Locke- “What? What thing?”
Walt-“Just don't open it!”

Sawyer tosses a bottle of pink Stomach Relief medicine at Michael. He thought he might need it, “Wouldn't want our pilot out of commission before take-off.”
Michael wonders if Sawyer’s feeling guilty and informs him he’s off the raft. Sawyer’s pissed because they had a deal.
Michael-“Yeah, well, the deal ended the minute you decided to poison me.”
Sawyer- “What now?”
Michael waves him off, “I'm done with you.”
Sawyer-“You ain't done with me by a damn sight. You said you needed four!”
Michael- “I've got four! You've been stealing stuff off of dead bodies, keeping it for yourself, using it to buy favors. You're a liar and a criminal, and I'm not letting you near my boy."
Sawyer is shocked and pissed off! “Oh, I'm a criminal, huh? I poisoned you because I'm a criminal."
Jin pushes Sawyer away.
Sawyer tells Jin, “Get your hands off me, boy.”
Then he walks over to Kate and says, “Hey, sweet-cheeks, I had no idea how bad you wanted off this rock. Time to set things straight.”
He grabs Kate by the wrist and pulls her over to Michael. Kate demands he let go of her but he is going to reveal the identity of the real criminal to them. As everyone is chiming in for Sawyer to leave her alone, he opens her backpack and dumps her stuff out and presents the passport Kate was altering.

Sawyer- “You all remember Joanna, don't you? Huh? The woman who drowned? Now what's Kate doing with poor Joanna's ID? Could it be she'd do just about anything to get on that raft? So she could get herself rescued, run off with a new identity before half the reporters in the world descend on this damn island? She might even poison the captain himself.”
Kate yells for him to shut up.
Sawyer-“She don't care about nothin' or nobody but herself.”
{Flash Whoosh}
Tom and a hospital worker wheel Diane down the hallway. Tom dismisses his helper and motions to Kate she can come out now. Tom will wait in his office while she visits with her mom. Diane looks terrible and her eyes are closed.
Kate-“Hi, mom. Can you hear me? Mom?”
Diane slowly opens her eyes. Kate cries and tenderly touches her mother's hand, “It's me, Katie.”
Diane-“Katherine?”
Kate- “It's me, Katherine. I'm so sorry for everything I have put you through."
Diane starts to cry and very weakly calls out for “Help”.
Kate tries to tell her it's okay but Diane is hell bent on summoning help. A hospital worker sees Kate and she runs away; she runs right into a security guard who asks her what’s going on.
Kate shares that she’s her daughter, “She's just confused. I was going to get a doctor.”
The security guard grabs hold of Kate and radios that they have a situation. Kate grabs his walki talki and hits him.
Tom shows up, Kate needs his car keys. She takes off running and Tom runs after her.

They burst through the red door leading them to parking level 3.
Kate drives Tom in his car. {Plate-394-GC2} A police car blocks her escape! Kate tells Tom to get out! But Tom is not letting her do this, if she cooperates they’ll go easy and she can have a real life. Kate sees the cop calling for backup and demands he get out because she’s got to go, but he won’t go. Kate drives through the blockade and the cop fires three shots at the car hitting Tom. Kate takes off and crashes into another car. {Plate 614-GJ5}
Kate-“Tom? Tom! Oh god, Tom. No, no, no, Tom. Please wake up.”'

She sees that other cop cars are coming, notes the items on the backseat and takes off running.

"You wanna tell us why you need to run so bad." wonders Sawyer {Flash Whoosh}
"You wanna tell us the truth?"
After a few moments of hesitation, Kate admits she was on the plane with the Marshal and yes she was wanted, caught and was being transported back. "No matter what I say about what happened, about what I supposedly did...I'm going to jail. But I didn't poison you"
When she wants to step closer to Michael, he backs away from her. He also hands the passport back to Sawyer. Everyone seems a bit disgusted and walks away.

Jin and others working on the raft while Sun looks on. Jack walks over and mentions that he/Jin looks determined. Sun agrees and also admits that she doesn't want Jin to go. Jack asks if that's the reason she tried to make him sick, "Is that why you tried to make him sick? Michael and Jin working together all the time... pretty easy for them to get their water bottles mixed up."
Sun cries-"I didn't want him to die out there. I just didn't know what to do. I only used enough to make him...I wasn't trying to hurt him. Are you going to tell the others?"
Jack-"I don't see any reason why they need to know. But Sun, he's going. If I were you, I'd...I'd say goodbye."

Kate stands alone poking at a campfire with a stick. Sawyer informs her he's back on the raft, "Michael's gonna cowboy up, set sail tomorrow." She asks if he's there to say he's sorry.
Sawyer-"Nah, sorry don't suit me. You cornered me, Freckles. I did what I had to."
Kate-"I cornered you?"
Sawyer-"You said if you wanted my spot you were going to take it. I guess I believed you. Well, that's that. I've got some packing to do."
Kate asks why it's so important for him to be on that raft. Sawyer feels it's because there ain't anything on this island worth staying for. Kate tells him to be safe.
Sawyer-"Yeah."

Michael tells Walt he's feeling better, "I'm going to be alright. Hey, don't worry. I'm going to be on my feet soon. We'll be sailing home before you can even..."
Walt blurts out he's the one who burned the raft because he didn't want to leave and thought he could stop Michael. He is really sorry. Michael says it's okay, they can stay there and they don't have to leave.
Walt-"Yes we do." {Why?!}

Kate sits alone sulking and Sun walks over. Sun tells her Jack knows but she didn't tell that it was Kate's idea. After all, why should Kate be punished when she was only trying to help Sun. Jack said he wouldn't tell the others.
Kate-"Yeah, Jack's good at keeping secrets."
Sun-"When I was a little girl I believed that once I found the man I loved I would be happy... forever."
Kate-" Yeah, me too."

Born to run is a great episode!
Here's another episode of Kate on the run.   Is that Kate's role, her only role on the "Island"? She obviously has become a product of her circumstances too.   Her "one crime" has led to how many other crimes? Having this woman be eternally on the run is a cycle of sorts, wouldn't you say? {Wink, wink} How can that cycle be broken? Interesting that Sawyer knows exactly what Kate is capable of.

We discover Sun is the one who poisoned the water in hopes that Jin would drink it and have to stay with her. That's so romantic! But Kate is the mastermind behind the idea and the concoction! We also learn that Jack is very good at keeping secrets. Yes, even the perfect doctor is good at that!

Michael has been in hyper mode to get off the "Island" and I still find important. I know, now the monsoons are coming, which must have been bullshit because the weather didn't really change on or around the "Island".   Maybe Arzt isn't such a good teacher, but maybe he's a better motivator. But I do love Arzt! Obviously Michael and Walt know a few "little" things about the "Island".

Things to Note...Questions to ask...
* IMAGINING. Imagining what?!
* I.D. Identity.
* Kate's plate on her car was changed from Nebraska to OHIO and we're led to believe her "flash" takes place in Iowa. Are we seeing just your run of the mill plate change or is it more important?
* MRI. Hospital.
* Charlie- “When I come back alive.”
* Neuro. Head.&
* Teach. Learn
* Hide.
* Wire.
* Roles. Prisoner. Marshal. Teacher. Doctor.
* Fly around.
* Right
* Wrong.
* Light and Dark.
* Michael knows. Here's the thing, I feel that the Lostie's know they've been “there” before; they just don't really remember. But Michael may remember more than he lets on, hence his hurried behavior to get off the island. I know, it sounds out there, but hey, this thought is brought to you by Karen. LOL! Or is all that about Michael and his "role"?
* Memory Box. Time Capsule.
* S.O.B. Walt does know! Is Walt speaking of the hatch or something else that shouldn't be opened? Hmmm…or maybe it's something else altogether. Maybe it's just me but when Walt says they have to leave, it feels like things are supposed to happen or take a specific route, so to speak.
* How many criminals are on this island?

Vocabulary and Research…
* Convertible-Adaptable-Changeable-Translatable-Exchangeable.
* J boat- The International J is the world's most popular one-design keelboat. The boat is manufactured in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
* Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), is primarily a medical imaging technique most commonly used in radiology to visualize the internal structure and function of the body.

We still have the "Island" of secrets. The "Island" itself is a secret, what goes on on the "Island" is a secret, everyone on the "Island" are secret keepers! How will we ever know who is telling the truth?

What is Kate’s role in all that we see? Is she at the heart of it all? I don’t know, but sometimes I feel like they’re playing "Grownup make believe", like a grown up live role playing game.

I'm very excited about the next episode; there is much to talk about there! And of course season 2 is filled with so many things. Season one is a great foundation for this story, but the meat of it is yet to come!

Love to all who are "LOST"™

Disclaimer: I never claim to know everything about the show and my thoughts by no means make me right. The things I share here are my views and/or opinions. I don't claim to catch every single detail either. You all know I hate spoilers, and I stand clear of reading certain sites as to not take me off my own course of research. The one thing I don't need to do here is rehash all of the obvious clues from an episode, we all know what they are. Understood? Good. Let the fun begin!I'll only note things that I know come up as clues later, but need to be noted when they first show up and things I find that will be of importance. It will get very exciting as we progress.
